    Nice place for walking
Casco Viejo is an old city Bilbao actually. It is several streets on the other bank of the river. You can find here La Ribera market, New Square, Arriaga Thearter, Catherdral and old churches. Some of the streets are pedestrianized ones.

Busy square but great for people watching
Everywhere you look there is history in the walls of the place and many pretty buildings to marvel at. The square is alive with tourists but you still get the old town vibe through the layout and traditional pinxos bars all around. We went during a fiesta so it was especially busy, including a hen party, so if you don’t like crowds trying using a restaurant or cafe outside of the main square

    Casco Viejo plus Basque chessecake
First trip to Bilbao. My wife and I loved it. This former industrial city has reinvented itself as a cultural, tourism, and knowledge industry center. The Casco Viejo -- loads of narrow medieval streets and alleys mostly filled with shops catering to tourists -- was interesting. But it was jammed. We found the rest of the city on the other side of the river to be equally if not more interesting: Gran Via, Guggenheim, the bridges, the streets around Abando metro stop to be as if not more interesting. The Mercado de la Ribera (the old covered market) is 1/2 traditional market with the stalls you'd expect. The other half is an essentially a huge tapas bar aired at tourists. You need to go, but once is sufficient. Tip #1: Be sure to buy the transit card (3 Euro) and put some money on it. The card is good on buses, the term, subway and the funiculars. It's a great bargain. Tip #2: Do not miss the Basque cheese cake. "Tarta de queso." You can buy it at just about any bakery or sandwich shop. It puts NY-style American cheesecake to shame. Tip #3: Any calories you consume in Spain do not count. You'll be walking enough to more than offset them.

Wander around and enjoy the sights.
Beautiful architecture and so many shops - but be aware of time of day for best experience. Shops and restaurants often close midday . Many little “plazas” to enjoy. Plaza Nueva has many places to sit and you can grab a variety of pintxos from several places. Bakeries, cafes, bistros, and bars line the street with several different shops with shoes, hats, clothes and even stationary.

Small "old town" area. Not an "unmissable" stop but has the usual array of lovely squares and pintxo bars, tourist-oriented shopping, etc. Given limited time, I'd focus more on the areas of the city in which locals live, work, and socialize.

The old town is a residential area filled with 4-5 level apartment buildings with shops and churches for locals. These narrow dark residential streets lack greenery - just pavement; the tall apartment buildings block out the light. We stayed on the streets connecting its attractions like the St. Nikolas Church, the Archaeology Museum, and the Opera Theater. These streets were clean and busy, filled with groups of walking tours; we felt safe. The shops like bakeries, fish and vegetable shops, tapas bars were located at street level with apartments at least 4 -5 levels above, many with wrought iron railings on balconies. The old town is easily reached either by the tram with several stations along the river in the old town and the 1 metro station near the St. Nikolas Church. There are enough attractions in the old town to spend a few hours, depending on your interests.

The Old Town of Bilbao is very beautiful, we loved the colorful buildings which look well maintained. It was a Friday summer afternoon and it was busy, people in the streets, there was a good atmosphere. I have travelled a lot in Spain and I can say Bilbao is beautiful, one of the best cities. You can see all attractions in one day but the vibes are good and make you want to stay for more time.

Casco Viejo (Old Town) in Bilbao is a bit gritty and has a lot of graffiti but I enjoyed walking down the narrow streets and alleys. There are a bunch of pintxos bars to choose from. La Ribera Mercado is located on the Nervion River. There are a couple of old churches worth seeing as well as Plaza Nueva. Do not miss visiting Casco Viejo when you are in Bilbao.

A wonderful area to stroll around. Charming and authentic, lots of little alleys and picturesque squares. Highly recommend for wandering around in the late afternoon and early evening, stopping here and there for a drink and a pinxtos.

We stayed in the area. It might not have been quite as posh as other areas but being able to just go right out and wander the lanes, eat, browse, and just people watch made for the best experience. Definitely had more of a locals vibe than some old towns which may be more touristy. Definitely recommend coming here and allowing yourself some time to just wander and absorb the environment!

I think this is supposed to refer to the Metro Station serving the Old Town, which it conveniently does. One very impressive aspect of the whole city is the "Bilbao WiFi" which seems to cover most of the city, a good service too, which is quite a bit of infrastructure. The Old Town itself is very well presented, almost wall-to-wall Cafes, Restaurants, Shops & Apartments. Always busy and very pleasant

You may bump into people because you are so busy staring at the architecture. Building lining the streets will have you in awe. Whether it be the doors, terraces, or roof tops, there is so much to see. Also, this area is loaded with pintxos food shops and bars. Take your time. Stroll the streets. People watch. Take lots of photos. It is a beautiful blend of several eras of architecture all in this area. Worth spending a couple of hours here when in Bilbao.
