Santa María del Naranco, without a doubt, is the most beautiful monument in Asturias. The guides who show you and explain the building are experts and very professional, I have experienced this on my different visits. Built to be a pleasure palace, just 20 x 6 meters, its ends are occupied by the most beautiful balconies in Asturias.
But the destiny of the building was not to witness court life, but to hear the beatitudes in January, the seven words on Good Friday, the parable of the tares in June and the parable of the vineyard in October; because it was dedicated to a church after part of the temple of San Miguel de Lillo collapsed.
More than 1,000 years passed when a certain girl learned of the existence of this construction. But the building was not destined to meet the girl then, but many years later, when she heard seven words next to her, without it being Good Friday: "well, what? So do you want to be my girlfriend?"
Without a doubt it could not have been a more anticipated or perfect visit.
Enjoy without rushing, be patient with the guides.

Well worth a visit if in Oviedo! We walked from our hostel in town to the church (less than 2 miles) the day before we started the Camino and the scenery as well as the church were beautiful. You can also drive to the church. Recommend the guided tour (even if you don't understand Spanish) of the church and crypt, which also includes a tour of the nearby Church of San Miguel de Lillo. Spectacular 9th century and UNESCO World Heritage site!

You’ll end up in beautiful surroundings with great views over Oviedo city. 100 metres away is another historical site, San Miguel de Lillo. Both buildings are pretty seen from the outside, but the top attraction is the walk up here and the views.

Even in the rain, don't stop going. Better by car and the regular bus goes up once every hour. From the car parks you have to climb the mountain for a while but it is worth it to see it and take a few forums. They told us that in July we could visit the inside

This is only information about the accessibility of the church. I cannot show any photos of Santa Maria del Naranco at the moment. It is now closed and difficult to view inside, because reservations are required. More than 20 years ago it was already very difficult to enter, but that was spontaneous and only photos were taken from the outside. Go to the Tourist Office for information and reservations.

Beautiful walk about 4 km from the center of Oviedo. The road goes up pretty good. I advise you to drive half the way if you are motorized.

I went to visit the two pre-Romanesque churches of the Naranco with friends from Italy. We all loved the visit not only because they are already a gem but also because of the Guide that explains everything spectacular.
A highly recommended visit.

Combine with San Miguel de Lillo, which is on the same site, and you get a guided tour (in Spanish) of both for E3. You can't walk round by yourself, it is only by guided tour, so allow time for the tour to start. There is an information centre by the car park to pass the time in. It is a lovely site with a view over the city, and the two 9thC buildings are intriguing. However, it is quite a way out of town. Go by car, or take the bus (The A1/2 line when we were there).
