- MofromMassPlymouth, Massachusetts1,654 contributionsOne of my favorite places in GranadaWow! This place was amazing. There's so much to take in, you almost have to walk around a couple of times to take it all in. It's not very big compared to the cathedrals in Spain, so you can easily see the entire place in under an hour. The room behind the altar where they keep the monstrance is stunning, as is the monstrance itself. If you're lucky, you'll be there when they open the massive gold doors on the altar that exposes this room to the main church. They provide you with an audio guide and they have a section in the church with virtual reality headset that you can use it you choose. Highly recommend a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Ginny SBudva, Montenegro7 contributionsDon't miss an opportunity to see this site. This book was not noted in the travel guide I purchased for our trip to Spain but we learned about it at breakfast one morning at the hotel. I was really special. The virual reality and the audio on my phone made the visit so enjoyable. This Basilica should be listed in the top things to do in Granada.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 December 2023
- MikeWhoLovesToTravelSeville, Spain47 contributionsWonderful highlight of Grenada away from the AlhambraThis is a must see if you are in Grenada. Forget the Cathedral this is amazing. A Baroque masterpiece with something to see at every angle. The visit may seem expansive at 10 euro(Apr 24) but it includes an audio guide and the opportunity for a 360 degree immersive tour. You won’t be disappointed.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- Jenna-Mae2 contributionsOne of the best things to do in GranadaA truly spectacular building - one of our favourite places we've visited in Granada. We took a guided tour (only €2 more than a standard entrance), and it was well worth it! Our guide, Irene, was friendly, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable. She explained to us the history of St John and the Basilica, and well as explaining the meaning behind the artwork and architecture. It really enhanced our visit - we can't recommend the guided tour enough!Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 11 July 2024
- GAR926 contributionsOpulent and breathtakingWe only had time to visit one religious site in Granada, and I’m very glad we chose this basilica. The grandeur of its decoration is difficult to comprehend even when you’re staring at it. The audio guide is excellent and there’s a lot to see hereVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 August 2024

This is an amazing place. Come along to mass or pay a modesto fee to do the tour. It's a working church that welcomes all and inwhich you can experience the highest artistic achievements of the baroque movement. If you are here for mass on the 8th of the month, there's a special great as it's the day we remember Saint John of God and you can visit the reliquias for free

This stunning basilica dedicated to the patron saint of Granada is not to be missed on a visit to the city. Built in the mid 18th century, it's nothing special on the outside but the Baroque style interior is opulent and everywhere is covered in frescoes or gold. It's only a few euros to enter and you can also take a virtual reality tour. The audio guide is excellent and informative. You are able to walk up the stairs and visit the chapel behind the altar where you can look down through to the main nave of the basilica. You can put a euro into a box which will illuminate the altar which then looks even more fantastic - it wasn't working when we visited but if you ask a member of the staff they will illuminate it for you. A definite must-see.

Made a visit here with a fellow traveler. The church opened its doors in 1759 and is one of the most outstanding Baroque temples in Spain, for its artistic mastery and its significant heritage wealth. I did find the admission was on the high side for 7 euros, especially since other similar attractions in the area were 5 euros. There weren’t many tourists, so you can get good photos, especially from the upper floor.

this is a magnificent church with phenomenal architecture. it's really quite breathtaking.
the reason for the low rating has everything to do with the staff on site when i was there on 26.11.22 between the hours of 15:00 and 17:15 or so. when i got to the top of the church in the dressing room, i was followed corner to corner by a blond haired, with brown roots staff worker. i didn't notice at first because i was so taken by the construction and golden towers. but every time i moved to another portion of the space or to connecting rooms, that staff worker was right behind me scowling and just generally being unpleasant. there were other non Black participants walking through the space as well, but they were not targeted the way i was and continued to be for the duration of my time in the place.
it's really baffling to me that my immaculate appearance and stunning skin tone elicits such responses. the last place i expected to experience it was in the halls of a church. i suggest that the basilica of saint john of god train their employees to deal with all types of people from all kinds of places and backgrounds.
i usually don't write reviews, but folks should know how some people hired to work at this place treats Black people.

I was expecting a gaudy, display of gold but we was very pleasantly surprised with the church. As others have called out the fact that they have opened up all areas of the church to visitors is quite unique. Yes it is flamboyant and covered with gold and silver but we both were impressed with the beauty. The irony is that this church was built in honor of the patron Saint of the poor.

Simply amazing. A thoroughly beautiful church from every angle. Stunningly painted or gold gilted everywhere, side altars, walls, ceiling. And what can you say about the carved golden altarpiece the full height and width of the church with the magnificent silver tabernacle. Being able to walk to view it all close up and also from above were more surprising pluses. Phenomenal church, far better than the Cathedral or the real Capilla nearby.

Not far from the Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel, this was surprise find, as it was astonishing to experience. The sheer beauty is overwhelming with all its unique colors, craftsmanship, detail, etc. I was definitely happy we stopped to tour this place.

What baffles me whenever I visit Spain how insanely ornate most of their Baroque churches are. While Italian or German towns advertise their churches by quite a large amount, Granada understates their churches. One beautiful church with large gold leafed altars and particularly the rich reliquary chapel is this basilica. They also open and close the chapel's door above the high altar so you can see all facets of what the church would have looked like in normal times in the 18th or 19th century.
I am aware that the Alhambra is really quite unique for Europe, while the churches are not all that, but still I would hope Granada will advertise their main churches a bit more in the future, since otherwise people might be missing out.

no need to purchase in advance. We found very few queues in Granada even though we read that there would be.

Obrigado

Não me pareceu que ela fecha algum dia. Eles fazem a visita guiada e tem mais pessoas para dar atenção ao visitante. Achei organizado, equipe boa e a basílica belíssima, você não pode perder!

Hallo.
Just like the other contributors have answered, this is not the Cathedral.
Now 2 points to note, if you like the Church of Saint John of God, the curator of the church recommended that I go and visit the same high baroque Monastery of Saint Geronimo. It is even more ornate and much larger.
Quite separately if you visit the Cathedral, which you cannot miss as it is so much higher that other buildings around, I recommend you visit the Royal Chapel. The Spanish people call it the "Capilla Real" and it is just 3 minutes walk from the Cathedral. See my reviews on Trip Advisor. If going to the The Cathedral then you are in restaurant land and there are some great Ice cream shops or cake shops for afternoon tea.
Saint John of God church is in the University area, which has that informal air and somewhat cheaper to eat.
Of course you know about the Alhambra but in the same place that you catch the minibus to Alhambra you can catch the minibus to the square of St Martin where you get a beautiful vista of Alhambra across the valley.
Enjoy.
