I was on a guided tour to Marbella, but first we made a detour to Porto Banus. I didn’t like Porto Bonus. It is too much, a playground for rich people, who want to show up how much they own. Luxury yachts and cars. I prefer more modest places. I’m a down-to-earth man from the countryside and I don’t like this kind of extravagant style of life.

Prior to choosing this destination, I watched dozens of YouTube videos and researched extensively looking for the perfect Spanish coast destination before choosing Puerto Banus in Marbella, Spain. I chose well. Puerto Banus is even more beautiful than any documentary you’ll find.

For starters how can you beat 62 degrees Farenheit in January? I left temperatures in the teens and grey skies in the New York City tri-state area and I’m not missing a single day of being home.

This port town on the Costa del Sol in Spain is the most exclusive resort area I’ve visited. I used to think that nothing could beat MonteCarlo which I’ve visited at least a dozen times but, I must admit, Puerto Banus rivals the port area of Monaco. The people here are friendlier, more approachable and excited to tell you all about their community.

I was surprised to see yachts many times larger than ones I’ve seen in MonteCarlo. What takes one’s breath away is the stylish and elegant architecture against the beautiful green mountains as a backdrop. The buildings a gentle blend between the elegance of Spanish design and Moor culture.

Palm trees and green shrubbery abound everywhere. I was surprised to find orange trees teaming full of fruit in the winter! The bougainvillea still thrive in January as do many other beautiful flowers throughout the city. Wild parrots nest in palm trees, adding to the beauty of the natural setting.

One thing that stands out is the cleanliness of the ocean water. Throughout the day there are huge schools of grey mullet and other species swimming up to the sea wall, an indication of clean water and healthy sea beds. Let’s all make sure we keep it that way!

Even though it’s now the middle of winter, there’s still a contrast in colors between the backdrop of the lush green mountains against the clear blue sky and ocean.

Puerto Banus is spotless. Clearly residents take pride in keeping their city clean, especially in the port area, which in other places tend to be the dirties part of town. We did not see a single piece of litter in the water nor on the streets. What a breath of fresh air!!!

Speaking of port area, this part of town is full of restaurants. The most sought-after are the ones along the water. One can find anything from Lebanese, Indian, Chinese, Argentinian to traditional Spanish cuisine. There are hookah bars everywhere and one can sip a pitcher of sangria all afternoon without anyone pressuring you to leave.

Prices are high. Puerto Banus is not known to be a cheap nor known as a college age destination. This is where the rich and famous come to show off their wealth and money is not a consideration. People have been known to spend thousands on champagne just to shake the bottle and spray it amongst the crowd.

This part of the Costa del Sol is as diverse as it can get. On any given day one can hear Arabic, Spanish, English, French, Dutch, Norwegian, Russian, Hindi and many other languages. It’s a microcosm of the global community.

The most famous couture designers are represented here. I counted four Dolce and Gabbana locations in less than one square mile.

Nightlife is unparalleled and clubs abound. I understand now why many businesses only open at mid-day. Most people are up partying the night away. Police and security abound since, apparently, with lots of money come lots of questionable activities after sunset.

The best time to visit this area of Marbella is early morning before the throngs of crowds appear. I’m used to lunching between 12 and 1PM, a great time to enjoy local eateries before the locals and visitors fill the restaurants.

I’m here in January, just after the New Year, and it’s lovely to see Christmas decorations still out. The Spanish celebrate the season through January 5th, when the Three Kings Parade takes place. At this time of year, you can get a Roscon de Reyes, or 3 kings cake, which are available everywhere.

Puerto Banus is walkable. Parking is scarce so get there early. Garages cost upwards of 40 euros for the day. Some visitors rent bikes or people movers. We opted to walk everywhere to exercise away the extra intake of calories between the café con leche and desserts that are so delicious in Spain!

Found a lovely apartment close to the beach. All set for a nice relaxing holiday.... not!

It seems Banus wants to be the next Ibiza. Unbearable music playing constantly most of the day and all night until late. Drumming. Some girl on a violin who really needs to have a few more lessons before inflicting herself on the public. Awful. Okay for 18-21 year olds but not the majority of the population. Can only feel truly sorry for the hundreds who have invested life savings in a nice apartment or holiday home.

Won't be back. Doubt if anyone over the age of 30 who is here this week will come back again.

This is a beautiful place with beautiful people, cars, boats an shops. It is an excellent place to sit in a cafe and people watch for hours. The shops are mainly designer and quite expensive but lovely for window shopping. There are many cafes and restaurants to suit all pockets. Away from the front line there are more reasonable shops and a department store, chain stores etc. It is 100% a place to visit at least once if you are holidaying in the area.

We love to come to the marina area to mooch around the up market boutiques and bars. The yachts get bigger and bigger!! But after paying 9€ for a coffee and coke we decided to walk back a block and find somewhere less pricey and equally as nice for lunch.

This is a beautiful place with a good marina and with lof of amazing boats. There are lot of luxury shopping if you want .There are too few beautiful beachs to do the night party. If you want a typical site or clam also it is not for you !

Lots of super yachts. Marina filled with designer shops, cafes, restaurants, bars & clubs. Food is dearer than places a bit more inland but good selection & atmosphere & better value if you go for the early bird menus. Great for people watching!

The area is dirty, poorly cleaned, the roads are not repaired, a girl fell on a crosswalk and broke her forehead because of the bad road.

I've been coming out here for the past 25 years, things have gone from bad to absolutely terrible in the last 5 to 6 years, the front line bars and restaurants are still ok but as soon as you wonder into the second line near Linekar's bar things get terrible, this whole place now is just full of African migrants who swamp the streets trying to sell you drugs and visiting the seedy bars/clubs....prostitution has always been here since day one but the girls have gone a lot more forceful and desperate, they cling onto you while your walking down the street and I've caught a few trying to put their hands in my pockets, yes a few of them are very good looking so I can see how a man can fall for them very easily especially if he's very drunk but you need to be smarter than that....I would stay well clear from puerto banus and instead stay in Marbella area down the road, it's a lot nicer there and more safe.
Puerto banus once used to be an exclusive area but now has changed for the worse by too many stag/hen parties and it looks like the whole of Essex is out here.
