About
The Historic Botanical Garden of La Concepcion is an English landscape garden with more than 150 years of history. Located at the northern entrance of the Spanish city of Malaga, it is one of the few gardens with subtropical climate plants that exist in Europe. It has more than fifty thousand plants, of two thousand tropical, subtropical and autochthonous species, highlighting the collection with more than a hundred different species of palms, bamboos, aquatic plants and its historic garden. Originally it was a recreational farm for a family of the upper middle class of the city since the middle of the 19th century.

- Deirdre MIreland131 contributionsMagicalWe came especially to see the Gardens Christmas light display and were not disappointed. It was simply magnificent and the crowd control was very good so not too busy to move comfortably around the light displays which was all breathtaking, glad we name the journey. - MacNorthernIreland109 contributionsBeautiful ParkBeautiful Park with so many walks. Interesting to see photos of the family that used to live there and imagine what it was like in their day. We took a taxi which I was glad of as we could walk further in the gardens. The cafe is really good and reasonable priced. Well worth a visit. Very enjoyable afternoon.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 December 2023

The 91 bus has been replaced by a dedicated hop on/off bus that does a loop from the station to the Jardin itself so you no longer have to walk up the hill and cross the motorway. 1.40 euros each way, The gardens are superb with an excellent cafeteria.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- T McGHillsborough, United Kingdom97 contributionsA pleasant walk back in time.I walked to here from Malaga city centre alongside the dry riverbed which was a nice walk and took little more than an hour without being stressed. I've done it a few times actually. Judging by what I saw on my visit and pictures from Summer through Autumn its obvious January isn't the best time to go as a lot of the plants will be dormant. That said, if you have a love of nature and plants in general then you'll enjoy it anyway - as I did. Mind you they could have reduced the €5.30 fee considering there were fewer plants in flower. Still hardly a deal-breaker. There are many lovely walks and plenty of curiosities to see. if the weather is good take a picnic as there's loads of places to sit and contemplate. There's also a cafe with a variety of food on offer. Plenty of toilet facilities also. The palm walk was superb as was the forests of bamboo!! Loads of water features and paths to explore so you won't be bored. You can easily spend several hours here. The family's original country villa is not accessible but there are static exhibitions in various outhouses. It's still nice to see the house adjacent to the celebrated wisteria which was NOT in flower in January obviously. All in all a great day out and if you're anyway fit at all walk to it instead of taking the bus! Apparently back in the day horse drawn carriages used to bring visitors to the house along the river bed so walking the same route kind of enhanced the experience for me!! Look out for original photographs depicting this in one of the static exhibitions behind the cafe.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 January 2024
- southerntraveller49Andalucia, Spain955 contributionsNice and relaxing. That´s a lovely garden in the outskirts of the city. In fact, its location makes this site very reachable if you come by car from outside the city. Parking there is easy too. Although originally belonged to a local rich family, the property was passed down to the local council in the end, being then opened to the general public. The gardens are very nice and vast -with a slight degree of neglect in some areas though- and there are so many different spots. There are lots of lush vegetation and a romantic vibe all over the place. Some parts are very close to a nearby motorway, so the noise spoils a bit that feeling, but all of the rest are more secluded areas where you only hear the breeze. There are some buildings scattered all over the place, nowadays used for exhibitions and so on, but all of them were closed the day I went.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 3 March 2024
- Sunshine81945819 contributionsFabulous green space on the edge of the cityI never miss an opportunity to visit a garden/botanic garden and Malaga's did not disappoint. The garden is about 4km from the city centre, but very easy to get to on one of the bus routes. We took the Green Line Sightseeing bus from the stop on Pasillo de Atocha, excellent value at 1.40 euro each for a return ticket. Entrance fee for the garden is equally reasonable. A week previous to our visit we had watched an episode of Monty's Spanish Gardens in which he made a brief visit to the gardens and wasn't very complimentary in my opinion, focussing mainly on its outlook over the city and the adjacent traffic noise, so we weren't sure what to expect. We were therefore delighted to find a beautiful garden, which indeed does have traffic noise to contend with due to the proximity to several motorways, but which is nonetheless a fabulous green space which, if I were a resident in Malaga, I would be utilising on a regular basis. We spent most of the day at the gardens enjoying the vast collection of sub tropical trees and flora, including a great collection of cactus and succulents, which in northern Europe would be confined to a glass house. These historic gardens are well laid out, the plants are well labelled with lots of spots to sit and contemplate. There are some great views over the city from both the Mirador and even better if you follow the Ruta Forestal at the top of the gardens. Nice little cafe at the entrance to the gardens.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2024
- chiltonFife, United Kingdom171 contributionsGreat way to spend a dayThe no. 2 bus from the Atarazanas has a regular service. However, its about a 20 minute walk uphill from the terminus to the entrance to the park (you have to cross under the motorway to get there). The park is massive but has a well signposted trail of paths around it. There is a good cafe and plenty of toilets around the paths. There is a lot of information as you walk round both about the history of the gardens and its founders. Different areas focus on particular aspects of subtropical plants e.g. the Mediterranean plants, the cacti area, Palm trees. We visited in February but imagine that there would be a riot of colour from Spring to Autumn. We spent the whole day there and still didn’t see everything.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 March 2024
- Susan CBarnard Castle, United Kingdom317 contributionsA real pleasureWe both have some walking difficulties, but we love gardens and had planned a visit here as the focal point of our four night break, as we have been to Malaga several times and seen most of the main sights/museums etc. We knew the bus options others have posted but wanted to maximise our walking capabilities and so took a taxi which was just under 10 euros from a central rank, near our hotel. We were also pleased to get reduced entrance rates, (for 65+) We made good use of the map you are given, since it clearly indicates the difficulty of routes, so we could choose ones we knew we would be able to manage. For example the Ruta Forestal which is shown as medium difficulty was a no-no for us after we had tried a short stretch elsewhere labelled as such, but there was a great deal of the site which was absolutely fine for walking stick users. There still remained some other parts of the gardens which we could have attempted but did not want to over-do it, also since these areas were being visited by several large school parties. However, I am certain we shall be back. To say it was a joyful and enhancing experience is putting it mildly, it really made our short break very special.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 March 2024
- tobyo99Roseville, Minnesota817 contributionsHighly recommended but beware of a couple of thingsWe first visited the fabulous Jardín in 2019 and absolutely loved it! So I knew I wanted to come back this year. It was fabulous again but I wanted to alert other potential visitors to a couple of things. We had a fantastic lunch at their cafe in 2019 so planned to do that again but it looks like it burned down. There is also a machine to buy your tickets instead of purchasing them at the window like we did last time. And the woman managing the machine was fairly rude to us. It made me wonder if it was her first week working with tourists. She lost her patience with us when my husband handed her a 20 euro bill since that was the lowest denomination he had and our tickets were just over 5 euros. Then he was hunting in his pocket for the change and I think it was at this point when she said "Madria mia!!!" Then I wanted a paper map, asked her for one and she rudely pointed outside to the stationary map. She was done with us. It's because of her that I give only 4 stars but the Jardín itself is absolutely 5 stars. So, bring small change so that the machine doesn't give you change in coins.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 May 2024

If you are a plant enthusiast I recommend!! It was around £4 each to visit. It seemed to be free entry between 4pm and 7pm. Beautiful garden of flowers and so many amazing plants thriving in their natural forrests They were also growing 3 new trellises of flowers which will be beautiful in about 12 months timeVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 June 2024

Went to see the Christmas lights. It is a 2km trek through the gardens at night. The light show is magical
And some great sound effects for kids. Pre booking is necessary and is worth every penny of the entrance fee

We visited these gardens on our last full day in the region. We stumbled upon it online. It is very easy to find and had lots of parking if you have a car. Buses from city centre to the Gardens operate on a regular basis. The gardens are extensive. You should alot at least 3 hours for the visit. Take water with you, as it can get quite hot even in the spring. There is a small restaurant on site at the entrance. The number of varieties of species and the care given to them and the paths/roads through the park make this a relaxing learning experience. The history of the park and accompanying artifacts add to the overall feeling of being in a separate world from nearby Malaga.

We visited this botanical garden at night, so we only had limited ability to see the various plants. We went as part of a Xmas light celebration. It was well done and quite pretty. It is necessary to book this activity in season ahead of time. There is a special bus that goes from the city center to the garden for the lights. We did see what in the proper season are probably beautiful wisterias. The trunks of the plants were enormous!

The highlight of our 5 days in Malaga. Worth the trek out of town. To save money I would recommend trying to time your visit with the sightseeing bus that heads up there hourly for just a few euros. (We didn't plan well and had to call a cab back).
Incredible garden though that is extremely planned. Many tropical and subtropical flora as well as a great place to go birding if you are into that. Not too busy in the afternoon and has lots of space. Easy to spend a couple hours wandering in. Has plants from all over the world.

Someone who has lived in the Malaga area for a long time suggested me to visit this botanic garden.
Definitely worth a visit, it has a nice set up and some interesting plants, trees, flowers art work etc. Everything you would expect in a botanic garden and then some.

Each year I visit Malaga and this garden the first and foremost on my list of must go there again. The selection of trees are absolutely magnificient. And it is impressive to know that it was a private house and garden. Don't forget to have the quiche salad in the lovely cafe there!

We got the public bus from the old town to San Jose which took about 15 minutes. We then walked about 10 minutes along the "green path" to the park. We were there for it opening at 10 and it was very quiet. We wandered around the paths, most of which are covered by the tree canopy. It is a steep climb to the top and not completely pram friendly but we managed. There aren't too many sign posts so follow the map. There are lots of hidden gems, statues, ponds, pools and waterfalls with frogs, geckos and terrapins.
The green route city sightseeing bus picks up and drops off here. We missed the first one so spent about 3 hours here. With a toddler, he was well entertained wandering around. There isn't much of a cafe at the start/end, just a small shop with some juice, ice creams and sandwiches. There are plenty of picnic areas so recommend you take a picnic. Was well worth a visit after we'd spent a lot of time in the town. Plants could do with a water but still a beautiful park. Only 5€ or so to get in and about 2.80€ each for the return bus.

Decided to take a walk ( though a long one) to visit Jardin Botanico rather than get the number two bus to last stop and shorter walk. But as the sun was shining saw yet another side of Malaga. Was definitely worth it not just for the gardened landscape but the stunning views looking back down to Malaga and surrounding countryside. Fascinating species including the black bamboo forest and lost of small chirpy birds a distraction from the paraquettes habitating parts of Malaga these days. Well worth a half day out whilst out in Malaga.

Is there an entry fee if you come to visit The Garden on your own?
Written 30 July 2019
Yes, it it. All kids over 6 years old and adults have to pay an entry fee. As far as I remember, it costs 6 euros for an adult, and it is a bit cheeper for children.

Bus No 2 as well. Goes from Alameda Principal. Get off at last stop. Follow green pavement to gardens- 15 minutes' walk. Bus runs every 10 -15 minutes but check before you set out.
You can also take taxi there- 10 minutes' ride along a lovely tree-lined avenue. About 9 euros.
