The whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site but our top 2 highlights were the Mezquita and exploring the historic Jewish Quarter. The historic centre is fairly small and it’s easy to walk between all the main sights so you can see a lot in a short time. However, you need to allow at least a couple of hours for the Mezquita so we decided to stay overnight at Hotel Mezquita which gave us a lot more time to explore. An overnight trip was enough time to do the following: 1. On arrival, we went straight to the Mezquita and after lunch we did a looped walk covering Calleja del Flores, Plaza Tendrillas, the Roman ruins and back to the ancient Roman Bridge (which is also the Long Bridge of Volantis from Game of Thrones). The bridge, Callehorra Tower, Puerta del Puente and the Triunfo del Rafael are all within a stone’s throw of each other. 2. From here, it was only a few minutes walk to the Jewish Quarter, where we visited the synagogue and explored the narrow, winding streets between Calle Judios and the Puerta de Almodovar. GETTING THERE: From Madrid, the high-speed train took I hr 45 mins.…

We walked across the Roman Bridge and ate at three different restaurants during our stay. It is a great place to walk around to see the sights.…

The old town with its maze of alleyways, historic buildings, beautiful patios and many squares is a delight to explore. It all has to be done on foot, so not a place for those opposed to walking. Highly recommended.…
