During a tour of Wittenberg, my husband and I had an opportunity to see the beautiful Church of St. Mary. Although it was closed on this occasion, our local tour guide provided us with its history. We were also able to take great pictures without crowds.
Church of St. Mary is also known as the Mother Church of the Reformation. According to available information, it was where Martin Luther often preached, and also the scene of Martin Luther’s wedding to Katharine von Bora.
The church is located at the market square with beautiful surroundings. The octagonal twin towers of St. Mary’s soar high above the city center. A wonderful place to visit.

This is the civic church of Wittenberg, where Martin Luther preached.
The twin towers of the Church rise up above the center of the town. Inside the church, there is the famous Reformation altar (painted by Martin’s close friend, Lucas Cranach ). Many other important heritages: the magnificent organ, beautiful relif and valuable paintings,...... can also be discovered.,
There is a poster on the front door indicating that photography is prohibited. So, I didn’t take pictures indoors. Thanks to Tripadvisor, I can enjoy so many beautiful photos here.

A natural companion visit to Martin Luther's house. Do not miss this church. It is the center of the lovely town of Wittenberg. The Ten Commandmaents painted by Crannach are very mpressive, but just knowing where you are is an amazing feeling.

It is also an obligated visit the church where Luther placed his 95 thesis. This church is an important part of The Reform. It is at walking distance from Martin Luther’s house and museum.

Beautifully renovated, both the church itself as well as its main work of art, the Cranach altar. Currently even topped by the Cranach exhibition (till November 1, 2015) with paintings and explanations.

Had a great experience worshipping here for a regular German Service on a Sunday morning that included an infant baptism! Can't see the altar for free unless you attend a worship service, but there is some way to pay on weekdays for the privilege. Also we were treated to a short Bach concert as postlude by the organist!

We went to see the famous castle church where Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door, and we knew nothing about this church. In the end, we were more taken with both the beauty AND the history of this church. You need to visit this church!

So much happened in the little town of Wittenberg and this church was an important part of that history. The Stadtkirche of St Marien is the oldest building in the town. It was witness to the first Protestant service, the first distribution of bread and wine to the congregants, preaching by several reformers (including Martin Luther), and the marriage of Luther to Katharina von Bora.
There are a number of incredible paintings including an altarpiece by Cranach. Two important objects are outside the church. The first is a 1305 Judensau (a rude sandstone sculpture showing Jews with a pig). The second is a bronze relief placed below the sculpture. It is a response to the horrible sculpture by today's Wittenberg community.

I missed the closing time of 4:00 pm so I only got to see the outside. It’s in an odd area behind a row of shops from the square. I would think this would be part of the square and maybe at one time it was. Nonetheless, it is still a beautiful church even on the outside.

Peeking up from a row of buildings at one end of the Market Square, this is the oldest building in town. It was also Luther's home church where he preached, where he was married and where his children were baptized. It is thought to be the church where the first Protestant service was held on Christmas 1521.
