How fortunate we were to be here the first day of the Christmas Market. We were able to get several beautiful pictures of the market with a great view of the Church of St. Mary’s in the background. Food, pastries, candy, mulled wine, handmade gifts with craftsmen offerings in small wooden huts. Glittering Christmas trees, pyramids and carousels welcome visitors from near and far.
The market square has weekly farmers markets, cafes and restaurants. A beautiful fountain overlooks the plaza in memory of both Martin Luther and Philipp Mcelanchthon. Also located in the square is the ornate Gothic facade of the 16th century town hall. Very picturesque. Definitely a nice place to visit.

A square before the old town hall (Rathaus). Before the Rathaus, there stand the statues of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, two leaders of the Protestant Reformation,
Surrounding are gorgeous historic buildings, shops and cafes…etc. A peaceful square, beautiful in all directions.

When one reaches the Market Square, there is no question that this is the center of town where centuries of business has transpired. It hosts the Rathaus that is very pretty, and it is the expanse that looks up to the famed Stadt Kirche where Martin Luther preached over 2,000 sermons in his lifetime. There are two large statues honoring Luther and his biggest supporter, Melancthon. It is presently being prepared for the 500th Anniversary celebration of The Reformation. Just a short walk from there is the also famed Schloss Kirche (Castle Church) where Luther posted his famous 95 Theses that challenged the path the Roman Catholic Church was on. And a short walk in the opposite direction takes you to Lutherhaus, once a monastery and eventually Luther's home where today a wonderful and extensive museum sits. If you want to know anything about his life, that is a wonderful place to go. But, the Market Square will be a beehive of activity in late October 2017. There is a concert stage and other interesting things there as they prepare for this celebration. Lutherans all over the World will be joining in unison and in celebration. My church, Bethel Lutheran Church (LCMS) in Bryan, Texas is not exception. Blessings to all who journey there!

Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a nice little stop. I would recommend an afternoon spent here seeing the sights. You can walk from the Castle Church to Luther’s House on the other side in about 10-15 min. but there are many sight and stops along the way. Just a beautiful area

Many more interesting marketplaces have survived in Germany, but Wittenberg's market square is interesting in its own way. It's a little too big for this small town, but it's historical. The architectural dominants of the square are the Old town Hall and the double bell tower of Stadtkirche, which does not go directly to the square. The space is divided by the fountain Marktbrunnen and two monuments dedicated to Luther and Melanchton. The monument to the great reformer was opened in 1821, and the monument to Melanchton - in 1865. Marktbrunnen was built on the site of the old fountain in 1621. Water is now supplied through pipes, and not from the well as before.

In a town dominated by Luther legends, it is most fitting to have 2 statues in the town square of Luther and Melanchthon. Both statues are on a raised pedestal and are protected from the elements/birds by a filigreed roof. Each pedestal has a saying attributed to him. For Luther, it's the title of his famous hymn - A mighty fortress is our God. Luther is shown in a familiar pose with his hand on the open scriptures. His statue is in a central position on the square while his friend's is off to the side. It was nice to see an image of these 2 people of whom one hears so much about in Wittenberg.
The 4 storey white Rathaus serves as a backdrop to these statues IMO. The cobbled stone square is very spacious with the market stalls and patio cafes not even filling the space. The tourist train has a stop at this square. Beyond, about 1 block, is the Castle Church/Schlosskirche - its round tower is quite noticeable. It was puzzling to see open drainage ditches along that street, but shop owners had tried to beautify an eyesore with flowering window boxes. The twin towers of Stadtkirche St. Marien rise above the rooftops of the burger houses on the other side of the square.
The market Square was just a photostop for us while walking between Luther attractions. The shopping street would be Collegienstrasse IMO as it had a variety of shops carrying Luther tourist souvenirs.

This is the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 95 theses. Wittenberg is decked out for an onslaught of visitors, and sadly, there haven't been as many as predicted. But that's good news for the visitor: not bad crowds, and a variety of performances, some of which take place here. The square is lined with sidewalk cafes and is a lovely place to have a beer and meal and people-watch.

We were there on a Sunday with hand made pottery for sale. It was a lively scene and one could imagine medievel europe on a market day in this square surrounded by so much history. Wittenberg was not destroyed during WWII and the Communist did not muck up the old part. This well worth a day trip from Berlin.

The Market Square is lovely. There are two statutes and the surrounding buildings are quite nice, which is why I rated it excellent. Good place to relax.

I saw pictures of this space being used for so many things (art installations, events etc.) but it was just empty when we visited (Aside from the permanent statues).
