The website is informative and can be translated into English but reverts to German when you try to book so this was tricky so I went in person and waited 35 minutes instead to queue from 9.20am to get in. It seemed very slow and very disorganised but I think it was a half term. The website explains why there’s primarily natural barriers to the habitats and a rationale to remove cages etc. This probably improves the size of space the animals have and can be sometimes why you may not see an animal which others have noted but that’s not a bad thing. I like this about it and know it’s a well regarded zoo. Generally the zoo was excellent and has all the main animals you want to see. The different cafes utilised the themes and outdoor spaces well and I enjoyed sitting outside watching the. Giraffes and zebras etc from the cafe. Prices seemed ok and there’s plenty of space too in the zoo for family picnics. The covered rain forest area was really great and the water ride ok at 1.5 euro. My main criticism is that there were no other zoo maps bar German ones and whilst English I can’t speak German but I can manage some conversational Spanish and French. I got a German one in the end to see the animal pictures! The zoo was poorly signed throughout compared to most zoos so that was the main negative feedback. I would go again and it seem great for families. There’s a long zoo heritage so I wish them well. They are instrumental in coordinating European and world wide programmes.

In my opinion the long journey to the Zoo Leipzig was definitely worth it.
Right at the entrance I was pleasantly surprised. We didn't have to queue, as it is often the case in the other large zoos. Moreover I also find the entrance fees to be rather reasonable.
A lot of the buildings and animal enclosures are from earlier times, but most of them are spacious. The zoo is divided into individual themed areas that are adventurous and authentically designed.
My highlights include the world's largest great ape enclosure (Pongoland), the Kiwara savannah and of course the enormous Gondwanaland. Where else can you find a real 1.5 hectare jungle with a large variety of animals in the middle of a huge city?
In Pongoland, which is one of the themed areas of the park, you can take part in a virtual safari and in Gondwanaland you should definitely not miss the boat tour.
Furthermore there are also many restaurants and small food stands where hunger can be satisfied at a fair price. The toilets are very clean and you can decide whether you want to pay to for using them.
In conclusion I do think that the Leipzig Zoo is worth every penny that you pay and is one of the most beautiful zoos that I have seen so far. I can definitely recommend the Zoo Leipzig.

We wanted to have a weekend break with our two kids from 4 and 11. We decided to visit Leipzig specifically because of its zoo. Compared to other top European zoo, we found that the 54€ family ticket was great value for money. We stayed from 9h30 to 17h30, almost from the opening to the closure. The kids enjoyed alternatively watching the animals and the playgrounds. For each playground, there is coffee place, snack or restaurant making the visit and a great experience for everyone.

After reading the reviews I had hoped this would be different.
I visited on a surprisingly warm dry day.
Gondwanaland is well presented and signposted. There are some quite big fish in relatively small tanks. These are found along the path leading to the main attraction which is the large tropical greenhouse. The space features animals from different continents and it's all well labelled. A few bats were flying around and landing in the trees. Other animals were in enclosures.
The rest of the zoo is more typical. There is a large great apes house with what appears to be moderate outdoor space. The tigers seem to be less fortunate and pace constantly with little distractions.
Because it was winter quite a few animals were not seen.
Although efforts have been made to increase enclosure space when all said it is a zoo and these wild animals have been caged.
There is a good select of eating areas as well as cafes and restaurants
If you feel zoos are acceptable then this is one is good and almost certainly better(and need longer to explore it ) in the summer months

We loved the layout of the zoo, it was well thought out with a good selection of animals on show and good facilities. However the zoo was much too crowded with no consideration for social distancing during the Covid pandemic, this was very disappointing and absolutely ruined our visit. I think the zoo is very irresponsible in letting this many people in.

We went to the main station and then took the Tram right to the Zoo, but you can also easily walk the distance. The Zoo opened its doors at 9am (and it’s open between 5pm and 7pm depending on the Months. Best check the homepage for the detailed list) and we stood in line to have our vaccination status checked. Then we got our tickets, which cost 18€ for adults from November until 20th March. From 21st March on, they cost 22€.
Inside we were greeted by a statue of a Dinosaur – and to the joy of my best friend, they had even more Dinosaurs all over the Zoo. I am not even sure if we managed to see all of them.
The Zoo is not small by any means, and has 6 theme worlds: Founder’s Garden, Asia, Gondwanaland, Pongoland, Africa and South America.
If you're planning to head there, let me tell you one thing: definitely head to Gondwanaland first. It's truly stunning and we sadly went there last and missed a lot!

I just spent the day at Zoo Leipzig with my 3 daughters, ages 10, 13, and 17. What a fantastic place! It took us about 6 hours to get through the entire zoo. As with most city zoos, space is at a premium, but this zoo is laid out well, the animals seem very happy, and there are multiple viewing opportunities at each exhibit. Nearly every single plaque is fully translated in English too, which is really great. Also, there are many Coronavirus precautions in place. Lots of sanitizing stations, and masks are required in all the buildings. Definitely a great way to spend the day! Highly recommended!!

Hi
First of all, I have to say that Leipzig Zoo is one of the most beautiful and best in Germany, absolutely top-designed enclosures, paths and surroundings. It can hardly be done better. Lots of themed areas, very large areas, absolutely great.
What we didn't like were the following things,
massive rip-off in the Godwanna Restaurant. Extremely high prices, with no information about the prices of the food. 2 normal plates for over €30 is a rip-off, even if it tasted very good. But buying something blindly and then paying that price is just not acceptable.
The second thing that was extremely negative was that all the carnivores were kept indoors and had no access to the enclosure. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. there was absolutely no sign of tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, hyenas, otters,
it wasn't that the animals didn't want to, they just couldn't.
As some of them had offspring that were 2-3 months old, that was particularly disappointing for us. The reason for this was not communicated, it was just made to look as if the animals would appear at any time. I cannot say whether it was because of the children's festival or not, but that is why it loses 2 stars, after all we traveled 3 hours to see what other zoos don't have.

I visited the zoo in the beginning of April 2022. I loved every aspect of the visit. The animals seem to be extremely happy, we could see many of them. The seals are extremely playful, and definitely one of the highlights. I also like the fact that the zoo has real size replicas of dinosaurs. The staff is amazing, the food service is great.
The zoo is huge, so my suggestion is to select what you are more interested in seeing.
I am only a bit concerned because it seems there will be an attraction with tamed animals, which to me defeat the purpose of a zoo. Particularly this one, where we can see there is a real consideration with the animal wellbeing.

It’s a zoo, a typical zoo? I’m from Ireland and it is just as good as Dublin zoo. I don’t think it is worth €22... a lot of the animals were impossible to spot when we went (morning into early afternoon).
So yeah, worth seeing if your in Leipzig for a few days, but not worth going to Leipzig for the zoo!

Im thinking of going in February or March and wonder how would it be like? What is a good period to visit?
Written 18 November 2018
February/March will be quite chilly with the possibility of rain, but it's a lovely zoo and would be great to visit at any time of year, just dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

Hola!

That's insane. U never ever see everything and have enough time in three hours! I would spent one day at the open area and one day in Gondwana land ... if you rush through u miss all the details and especially if u have kids wich play at bärenburg for hours! Take your time it's worth it.
