The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main Catholic church in Saxony. Built in the mid-eighteenth century in late Baroque style, it closes one side of the Theaterplatz, while on the other side it runs alongside the Royal Palace, to which it is connected by a covered bridge, and borders the Schlossplatz. The exterior is characterized by the presence of numerous statues of saints and the high tower. The interior, divided into three naves, is rather sober and with minimal decorations and you can see some large altarpieces and a beautiful baroque pulpit. The external view is certainly more impactful but, finding it open, even a short visit inside can be done.

The Catholic Court Church (today officially Cathedral of Ss. Trinitatis) in Dresden, with the patron saint of the Holy Trinity, is the cathedral of the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen and a parish church in Dresden. It was built under Elector Friedrich August II of Saxony by Gaetano Chiaveri from the year 1739 to the year 1755 in the Baroque style. Elevated to the status of concathedral in the year 1964, it became the cathedral of the Dresden-Meißen diocese in the year 1980 when the episcopal seat was moved from Bautzen to Dresden. As a former court church, it is connected to the residential palace by a passage over Chiaverigasse. It stands on the old town bank of the Elbe between Schlossplatz and Theaterplatz. Their planning began a decade after the start of construction of the evangelical Frauenkirche, which is 300 meters away on Neumarkt.

Beautiful church! Had the pleasure of visiting when the Katholische Academie boys choir was rehearsing for their "The Trumpet Shall Sound" performance from Handel's Messiah. Excellent accoustics and a truly beautiful interior.

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is also known by the name of Katholische Hofkirche and was designed by an Italian, the architect Gaetano Chiaveri. It is located on Schloßplatz, in the Altstadt in the heart of Dresden.
It was born as the Court Church and is one of the symbols of Dresden. Very very beautiful, in its sumptuous baroque.

Destroyed in WWII and re-built to look like the original has a cheap quality about it and there is not much to it in terms of decoration. We spent maybe ten minutes there and we normally spend much longer in a cathedral of this size. We had absolutely no desire to spend a minute longer.

The interior is disappointing, but my word is the exterior incredibly, entirely, and completely breathtaking. A triumph of a building! One can walk from the terrace down some steps to enter and that exact experience was one of the highlights of my day trip to Dresden. The architecture is just beautiful to look at, really.

Sure mass was in German, but one can follow along. Followed the procession, complete with donkey, into the cathedral for Palm Sunday. Beautiful service in a beautiful church even if I was attending with my Catholic wife.

The Cathedral built - in the very impressive Baroque style - between 1739 - 1755, by an Italian architect named Gaetano Chiaveri - stands near the palace of Dresden - a true architectural gem
Now the Cathedral itself is a catholic church that shows a lot of decoration - outside and on the inside - just to mention a few:
- the altar that is depicting the "Ascension of Christ" to the heavens and that was dedicated to those who died in the useless Allied raid of February 1945 .
- the paintings - that are done with a lot of details - following the "Way of the Cross" and the Passions of Christ - from His judgement, through crucifixion and culminating with Him rising form the dead and ascending to heavens.
Near the entrance there is a small altar and an area the is dedicated to those killed in the useless bombing of the city in February 1945.
The building itself is impressive - regardless if you are believer or an atheist - a true gem of baroque architecture - definitely worth some of your time to visit when you are in Dresden.
Visiting is free of charge so my recommendation is , if you plan to visit Dresden just put this church on your list - and check it out it is definitely worth it.

The Cathedral of Dresden is considered the most important Catholic Church of Dresden and one that has a lot of history. Built by the Catholic Monarchs of Saxony at a time when Saxony was majority protestant, I'm told by the guides that it had to be built in secret. The exterior of the church is of course magnificent is late Baroque and is adorned with many fine statues. The statues are especially magnificent when viewed from Hausmannsturm and The western end of Brühl's Terrace. The interior is ridiculously simple in comparison. There's not an awful lot to see inside apart for the stunning Rococo pulpit, and the upper balconies which I think creates an interesting theatre effect.

We're Catholics, so this was a BIG bonus for us. The Sunday morning Catholic mass times are: 0900 and 1030. There are more masses throughout the day, but you'll have the check their website for the latest times. So not only did we get to see such a beautiful church, we got to enjoy celebrating mass in it. The choir was absolutely first rate. Even the Psalms reader did a great job singing. At first I thought he was just an altar boy, but he had a wonderful voice. We stayed in a hotel just down the street, so to just wake up, go to mass in an ancient Gothic church, and enjoying brunch made it a great Sunday morning!

Does it cost money to go inside of the church?
Written 28 June 2017
No, one does not usually pay to visit an open church. Perhaps if it is being uded as a venue for an advertidrd concert. In that case you will surely find notices.

I am bringing a group of students to Dresden in May, and since we are coming from a Catholic university I am hoping to take them to mass. Are there services happening at the cathedral?
