Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I almost didn’t make this stop given the lukewarm reviews and criticism about the lack of English at the museum. Don’t let that put you off, at the ticket office you can download an app for free that provides an English +other languages audio guide tour. Bring some earphones tho. There’s an elevator and free wifi too and very clean facilities. The exhibits and artifacts themselves are rather intriguing and unique and worth a look see, even if the historical narrative, particularly WW2, has some rather large gaps in interesting places. It’s a modest and quiet museum. You can do it in two hours. There’s also an art museum on the other side of the building.

We were intrigued about the calling out learning about Dresden through times and the DDR exhibition.
It was a bit underwhelming though with only main signs in English and a very brief tour through time on Dresden and some random old pieces of things exhibited.
Still for 5 euro it was ok but in rear view mirror we would probably have seen something else.

This is a really nice museum with lots of information about the development of Dresden into the beautiful "Florence of the Elbe". But also with an informative section on the infamous bombing raid of February 1945. And don't forget the external fire escape!!

This museum explains the history of Dresden. There are many scale models of the town and many buildings. There is a movie of the bombing of Dresden by the Allied forces in 1945.

Unfortunately the museum does not allow photography at all. So it is difficult to remember after a while what you saw in the museum.

Unfortunately, I could only spend a short time here as I was constrained by the times of my day trip from Berlin, but I found the museum very interesting and good value. I was concerned that the guide from my day trip said that it "was all in German" - I came armed ready for some slow translating from my German dictionary - but actually most of the stuff was also in English.
I know it's a good museum when I come away with lots to google e.g. who on earth were "The Four Brummers"? what was that "state of emergency" in February, 1953 all about? I was also intrigued to know that Dresden is apparently the "Christmas Capital", the "Birth Capital" and the "City of Science", but I have a feeling that this must have been dreamt up by over-optimistic marketing men. Very interesting exhibits, I wish that I had had longer to spare than not much more than an hour.
However, I think I could have safely managed without the view of a medieval (?) soil sample from a latrine.
(Critical note for me: On the way out I stopped for a quick cappuccino from the machine and was cursing that all the unoccupied tables had something in German about "besuchen". I assumed that this meant "reserved" and drank my coffee in the corridor, cursing. I should have known from my brief German studies that this, in fact, means "visitors" - the museum seems to be home to students too.)

Stadtmuseum Dresden or the City Museum of Dresden is housed in a building built in Altmarkt, the 13th century central square of Dresden. It is a Neoclassical building with Rococo features was the Landhaus of Dresden. It was the seat of the Saxon Parliament of from 1832 to 1907, after which it was shifted to the Ständehaus. This museum puts on show the 800 year old saga of this ill fated city. It covers the social, cultural and economic history of the city. Out of the amazing collections exhibited here I was most impressed by the collection of photographs, postcards and portraits of Dresden residents and rulers. There is a second part of this museum which features the Dresden City Art Gallery.
Tip: You have to buy a ticket for yourself and your camera if you wish to take it inside with you.

This museum had great reviews, which is why we decided to visit. Good points are that the museum has a huge variety of exhibits, that, if explained sufficiently, could become a really good museum....

So to the bad points:

1. There appeared to be no explanation for the order in which one should go through the museum. The museum is on the third and fourth floors of the building, in each case on the left side and right side of a large staircase. We entered the left room on the third floor. Seemed sensible to us. But it was clear that we had skipped some history, so we asked a guard where to start (the opposite room). However from there it was a bit of a guessing game which of the 4 rooms came next (in Dresden history, chronological order), as there was absolutely no directions or explanation which room to go to next after one had completed one room. Even within one room, it was initially not clear which way round the room one should walk, and things appeared to have been set up without a regard for order.

2. Everything was in German, nothing was in English (bar a one sentence title for every exhibit). I speak German, and had to translate everything for my boyfriend who does not speak German. Still, I found the German info not that helpful, and we spent most of the time on wikipedia on our mobiles trying to understand more about each exhibit. I have to say though, that (with the help of wikipedia) this museum became really interesting, and we spent about 2 hours in it. I don't know if there is an audio guide one can hire, at least they did not offer us one when we paid at the entrance (where we spoke to the receptionist in English, not German).

An interesting museum but, in my opinion, there is no comparison between the city before the destruction and after the bombings, so as to better understand the enormous reconstruction work that has been done in the last decades

Not just for history and art buffs, the exhibit on Dresdens past and present is a great 2nd day in the city kind of activity. Going as far back as 1200s, the exibity is versatile, engaging and informative. However only the basic titles of items are translated into English. Potentially our visit could have been more interesting if the no doubt carefully composed long descriptions were also translated.

Although the building and the majestic past have been beautifuly restored, inside the museum I got that nasty DDR feeling, I had when I visited East Germany before the "wende". Were all pictures real? at least many of the were not and virtually all of the were lackered far to much, some even behind glass. I still have that feeling, not to be free, looked at... One has to go in, one has to see it, but I hope that DDR feeling will once disappear
