The Hauptmarkt (dominate market) in Trier, Germany is located in Old Town, The market square is the central point and six major streets converge here. Stern Street leads you to (the Dom & Liebfrauenkirche), Graben Street leads to the Basilica of Constantine and the Roman Imperial Baths, Fleisch Street leads to the Karl Marx House and Simeon Street leads to the Porto Nigra Gate.
The Haupt Market dating to the 10th century is a square that has numerous and varied architectural buildings reminisce of medieval times. The cobblestone streets are pedestrian friendly. The Dom Saint Gangolp, the Archbishop's Cathedral, the entrance to the Judengasse (Jewish Quarter), half-timber houses and Fachwerk houses are all in this area.. The Petrusbrunnen (Saint Perter's Fountain) AD 1596) has a statue of St. Peter on top, cherubs spouting water, various animals and gold gilding trim. Also look for the Market Cross (958) erected after the Viking invasion.
Shopping and outdoor cafes line the square as well. Locals bring their artisan crafts, produce and local wines. I had a few glasses of a dry white Riesling wine which was to my liking. Riesling wines predominate in this area of Germany. Souvenir shops are also available. Just down the street is the Porto Nigra, one of four entrance gates built by in Romans times and a historical museum. The Christmas market is a major event of the year.

This is such a cute, small, cozy and warm little town in Germany. It’s definitely small town and it feels it too.
It’s a must stop by, even if you only have an hour or two. It’s beautiful during the holidays when they have it all prepped to host the Weihnachtmarkt (Christmas market).
This smaller town has a welcoming personality that you don’t get in the big cities. If you come to Germany, be sure to visit the small towns too.

Central point of the city. Beautiful medieval houses, a church, a fountain. A pleasure to discover every detail. Between gargoyles, sculptures, grotesques... and then from the square, you can reach in a few minutes almost all the points of interest of the city. Magic.

A lovely area to spend time. Between March and early November there is a wine stand where local wine growers take it in turn to sell their wares. The area also has great shops selling all sorts of wares, and some days there are fresh produce markets.

This is Trier's main market square with beautiful historic buildings. Lots of shops, restaurants, and pretty interesting architecture. Just love the Steipe building which has the very steep black roof on top.

This area serves as the main town square for Trier, dating back to medieval times. It is centrally located and great for strolling, shopping, dining or sightseeing. Numerous shops and restaurants are here, as well as a number of historically important architectural sites. If in or near Trier, be sure and spend at least a couple of hours here.

The market square is the main square of Trier. The square is very large and bordered by a series of characteristic buildings, with the tall bell tower of St Gangolf's church as its backdrop. In this square you can also observe the colorful fountain of San Pietro and the ancient Market Cross, two very particular monuments. Always a very lively place even on days when there are no markets.

The square had varying architecture so it is worth some time to look up at the buildings. You could walk in various directions from the square to see the sites of Old Town Trier.

What are the hours of business here? Is 1700 too late to visit and will anything be open at this time?

The main attraction about the Hauptmarkt is the general impression of the square with the reconstructed historic facades and the views on the cathedral, the Porta Nigra, St Gangolf church as you walk around it . In that sense, the sights (like the Steipe, the Red House, the Market Cross, the gate to St. Gangolf church, the Market Fountain, the Jewish Gate, the Lion's Pharmacy, the Hauptwache ...) are always 'open'. The Toy museum closes at 5 pm., St. Gangolf church, accessed through the gate on the square closes at 6 p.m. Cafes and restaurants are open much later, so a visit to the square is always worthwhile.

If you mean the regular week-market that one is on:
Tuesdays and Thursdays at the 'Markt' (at the middle of the center) , or alternatively, on Saturdays on the 'Münsterplatz'.
The christmas market can best be visited November through middle of december, and is located around the Dom.
