About
In 1961, the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia acquired altogether 88 works by Paul Klee, which form the foundation of the museum’s collection. Celebrated in 1986 was the inauguration of the newly-constructed building of the Kunstsammlung am Grabbeplatz, with its characteristic black granite façade. Working in the tradition of Arne Jacobsen, the Copenhagen architectural office of a Dissing + Weitling created a noble, restrained building whose detailing is typical of the period, and which yielded primacy to the outstanding works of art on display. Inaugurated in July 2010 together with the reopening of the totally renovated existing building is an additional exhibition area measuring 2000 m², which features state-of-the-art exhibition technology and takes the form of two pillar-free exhibition halls – thereby bringing the total surface area to 5000 m².

Definitely worth visiting this high quality collection that's a who's who of 20th century art. The permanent collection takes about 1-1,5 hours to visit and see works by Paul Klee, Picasso, Braques, Mondriaan, Chagall, Kandinski, Dali, Matisse, Warhol, Pollock and also some really interesting textile art. The other half of the museum has temporary exhibitions.

“A Majestically Minimalistic Display of Moderne Kunst at K20”
Düsseldorf’s K20 Kunstausstellung has taken a daring leap into the realm of minimalism, presenting us with vast expanses of… space. In a world saturated with visual stimuli, they’ve courageously decided that less is, in fact, more. And by ‘more’, I mean more high ceilings and less actual art. These large voids perfectly compliment the few pieces of Moderne Kunst sprinkled throughout the museum. Their nod to Joseph Beuys is particularly subtle, with his renowned works masterfully camouflaged amidst the gallery’s expansive nothingness. It’s almost like a game of “Where’s Beuys?” The towering ceilings not only accommodate the enormous weight of artistic reputation but also the echoing sound of visitors asking, “Is that all?” Kudos to K20 for reminding us that sometimes, the real art is in what isn’t there. An exhibition not to be missed if you’re keen on appreciating vast amounts of curated air!

I rarely, if ever, give a one star review as I do try and see the good in things but my goodness this place tested me. It was c.€12 each to enter and I genuinely couldnt tell you what it was all about. The highlight was the impressive architecture of the building and the unique installation under the dome where you can climb out onto the nets and enjoy the inflatable orbs!!!

BEWARE!! Permanent collection is closed. 16 euros to see ONLY the Kandinsky and Klint exhibition ! Rip off! Can be done in well under one hour! Actually give it a miss!
No warning at time of buying ticket, ticket seller claimed he told me it was closed but this was untrue. Pointed to a sign that one can barely see.
This is extremely disappointing behaviour. I have come across this overcharging ripoff behaviour in some Mediteranean countries but never expected it in Germany. What a shame that this country has fallen to the low standards of its neighbours. Maybe its a funding problem. Shameful!

I visited with my brother in April 2018. We really liked the place and they have Dali, Picasso and many artists that were new to me. Large spacious building and lovely to walk around. I have one negative comment which is the guards or 'Watchers! follow you around and watch your every move. This wouldn't have been so bad but the fact that every move they made had echoing footsteps as they followed us around. So see a painting then move to the next 'clomp!, clomp!, clomp!'......,next painting 'clomp! Clomp!, Clomp!'........very distracting!! Can they wear softer soled shoes???

Firstly, it seems there are all kinds of pictures and reviews of the K21 mixed in here. They are completely different and at opposite ends of the city!
The K20 is the main gallery and has one of the best collections of early 20th Century German Expressionism you will see. If you're into this kind of art, which I am, this is a must visit as is the Folkwang in Essen and the Ludwig in Cologne.
The permanent collection wasn't as well arranged or narrated as it was in the others but it still had a huge collection of Klee, Kirchner, Marc, Nolde etc and some Picasso. There is also a huge space for installations and temporary exhibitions.
The K21 is for conceptual art and installations only, no 'paintings'!

We really enjoyed the art collection, especcialy Picasso, Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Max Slevogt.
The experience however, was really disappointing. We've literally been hunted by personnel, what gave us a rushed feeling. They follow every step you make with squeaky shoes at a 3 meters distance max and watch you watching art. Really awkward when you're alone in the room as a couple. We never experienced this before, normally guards just overview the room from the corner. It's getting to a point where the guard can't choose between who to follow when you split up as a couple in a devided room. When you walk to a name sign, who the artist is and what year it's from, the guard warns you that you're too close to the painting. They put the name sign there theirselves, so...??
The personnel only speaks German. There are no signs of what you can and can't photograph, so when photo's aren't allowed, the personnel comes after you to find out what you have been fotographing.
You have to leave all your belonings, but it's guarded.
The museum hasn't got much art for the price you pay, but perhaps the high price is because of the high amount of guards?

A great selection of artwork in both K20 and K21 but the labels for each piece were generally poorly positioned and a bit on the small side. However the big disappointment was the unsmiling staff on the receptions and in each of the galleries. Stalking the visitors and displaying an unwelcoming front.

This museum is very large and shows art from the 20th century to the present in galleries that seem to go on forever. Great modern masters in depth and breadth. Multiple works by Picasso and Mondrian for example. The spaces are beautifully proportioned and there's plenty of room to see things. It also has a nice little cafe.

Great museum for modern art. We expected that our children would be (slightly) bored but they also loved it. A must see when in Düsseldorf!

Why did this museum NOT clearly indicate to patrons buying tickets that the permanent collection is closed? Charged 16 euros to see a small exhibition without warning. Even asked at time of buying whether price covered everything in museum K20 and he said yes! Shocking ripoff!!! Shameful!

how do I get there with public transportation?

Note that there are two buildings. K20 Grabbeplatz is at the Heinrich-Heine Allee stop, K21 Ständehaus is at the Graf-Adolf-Platz stop. There's a free shuttle bus to go from one to the other, though it is a pleasant walk if the weather is good.
