A 670 year old Town Hall that is well worth a visit in Aachen.
Oct. 2021
Aachen's 'Rathaus' (Town Hall) was started in 1330 and was completed in 1349, built in the City's Altstadt in the Gothic architecture style. It really is a significant building and is only over-shadowed by the stunning Aachen Cathedral which stands opposite the rear facade of the town hall. It is open to the public (10am - 6pm) and the interior rooms are beautifully decorated. After a fire in 1656 caused substantial damage a decision was made to improve the building in the 'modern' Baroque style. After damage inflicted by the RAF during WW2 the town hall was restored and made safe as it was close to collapse. The final touch to the buildings current appearance was added in 1979 when new tower spires designed by Leo Hugot were put in place. There are 5 areas to visit on the ground floor, in addition to the Foyer and Ark Staircase, and then upstairs is the stunning 45m long Coronation Hall. In summary the Aachen Rathaus is well worth a visit, especially on a cold or wet day.

Beautiful old palace

The town hall is the stunning old palace of Emperor Charlemagne. Beautiful pictures and portraits adorn the walls, the main ballroom is stunning with the Crown Jewels. The town hall is worth a visit when in Aachen.

Just from the outside

Wonderful and very famous building, still used for coronation ceremonies and many weddings! No need to buy a ticket, just get a view of the two main rooms from the outside or by peeking in the entrance.

Another beautiful architecture

The city hall is a very grand architecture and well preserved. During the summer months, there is a small beach created in the front of the city hall for people to enjoy and children to play in the soft beach sand.

A must-see when in Aachen!
Jun. 2020
The Rathaus (city hall) is the most prominent and significant site in Aachen, along with Charlemagne's cathedral. The actual tour of the building does not take long and features magnificent rooms and parlors with the history of Aachen sewn into its very walls - from the portraits of Europe's oldest diplomats in the room where the treaty of 1848 was signed to the insignia of Charlemagne in the coronation hall (the largest in Europe). The city hall is colorful, powerful, and beautiful. It also boats an unforgettable view of the Cathedral and courtyard behind it (a picture you can't get from anywhere else).

Love this city! It was like being part of this city. It was a stunning building and the sorrounded and plaza as well. We took a stroll around the Christmas market and we enjoyed the time there. Seen through the eyes of the Roman Holy Emperor. Not an ordinary City Hall.

Seen through the eyes of the Roman Holy Emperor. Not an ordinary City Hall.
The palace of Charlemage.
But then with the sauce of contemporary city administration. Still, I loved going there,.....
