    Good, varied zoo
The zoo is located in a park, and the zoo itself is very park-like - there are trees, bushes, and small bodies of water everywhere. In general, you can see that a lot of emphasis was placed on incorporating the surrounding nature when designing the zoo. The zoo grounds are really huge, divided into an older and a newer part. The animals are very well housed and have plenty of space as well as opportunities to keep busy and retreat. Both the Polarium with the polar bears and many aquariums and the Darwineum with the tropical world are worth a visit and are highly recommended. In addition to the actual animals, there are also a lot of information boards here. As in every zoo, the food is not particularly recommendable and is also expensive. The entrance fee is also rather high, but it is still worth it.

    Super
Great zoo !! It is a very well maintained facility. ( compared to Hellabrunn Munich , absolutely equally beautiful!) The paths are very well maintained. Nice and cobbled. The Darwineum is really well done. The aquarium, very great. There are opportunities to sit anywhere. With or without fries and coffee. All very well signposted. And!! enough toilets.! Two more species would be nice. But when comparing the destinations in the region, definitely prefer in these beautiful zoo. Much more worth seeing and beautiful than e.g. the Oz...um

    Worth it without hunger
We have an annual pass for the zoo and we like to stay there. Only hunger should not be brought, as the prices for fries and co are very expensive. The first port of call with us is always the Darwineum, for a soft ice cream with topping. That's been discontinued, as it's now low season. What?? Soft ice always goes, we can't understand! Since we already know every animal and every corner of the zoo, we probably won't come back so often. Unfortunately...

A huge zoo that is home to many animals and, thanks to its forest location, offers enough shade for people and animals on sunny days. We are not lame and took regular short breaks and still spent about 6 hours there.
There is an old and a new section of the zoo and both are beautifully laid out and very well maintained.
The polar bear enclosure and monkey house are nice and big and look very new and clean. In general, we have the impression that a lot of attention is paid to keeping all animals in a species-appropriate manner and that a lot of importance is attached to it (as far as the zoo is able to do so).
In terms of animal diversity, we feel that all common zoo animals can be admired, apart from elephants, giraffes and pandas, if you can find them.
The ticket prices have increased compared to last year but are still reasonable. After all, the staff also want to be paid fairly and the animals want to have everything they need to live.

The zoo is definitely worth a visit.
Although the facility is located in the middle of the city, you don't notice any of the city's troubles. The zoo is incredibly well laid out under ancient trees and offers a lot for children to discover, even apart from the animals. In addition to the classic enclosures, the Polarium and the Darwineum are two absolutely top attractions in the park. We had a very nice and long day at the zoo. You could easily spend a whole day here. The only thing that should be better communicated is the fact that the machines and most of the restaurants only accept cash. So a small deduction; if that were improved, it would definitely get full marks.

The huge zoo. To see everything, plan to be there all day. Unfortunately, there is not enough information in foreign languages. It would be nice if the administration made an audio guide for the zoo in different languages. Overall a good experience.

There were four of us in Rostock Zoo today, I had tears in my eyes, some enclosures were too small and especially in some monkeys and the polar bears extreme behavioural disturbances were recognizable for example the one polar bear wiggles its head extremely and always ran up and down. Some monkeys looked very sadly through the window and let themselves down like a sandbag. I'll have nightmares for days to come, and unfortunately God breaks my heart that these animals live in captivity, must be locked up forever, even though they never did anything evil. A life of innocence behind bars.
I've been cured. I won't enter a zoo in my life. I do not tolerate the sadness and suffering of animals.

By far the most desolate zoo I have ever seen. The enclosures for the animals feel too small. All the animals look a bit skinny. Colorful lights in the zoo where people ask you what they are for. It's not worth the entrance fee, it would be better to return the animals to their homeland

Very nice zoo. We saw the polar bears get breakfast -very cool.

Nice big zoo. With interesting animals. The Darwinium is a mix of evolution and zoo exhibit. Ending in the primate in closures. Very interesting and well thought out.

We were pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to get to the zoo. The tram takes you right to the zoo entrance. Entry to zoo 17€ per person. It is billed as the best zoo in Europe and I have to say that it is pretty good but not, in my opinion, the best. That said it is well worth a visit and you can spend a whole day there quite easily as the zoo is suituated in a substantial are of parkland. The Darwiinian exhibit is excellent and the new polar bear enclosure is now open.

We went to Rostock zoo during last summer (Aug 2013) with the family of our friend hoping their kid would enjoy it. First, it was overpriced at 16 € per adult and next, not so much to see for the money. The same year we went to Berlin zoo where we had to pay something less than 20 € but could at least see twice as much varieties of animals (irrespective the fact that we visited Berlin zoo in the middle of the winter). It is more of an average zoo to spend few hours for kids but definitely over-priced.

Prior to coming on our cruise ship we decided to visit based on TA reviews. Arrival was simple by tram from the Hauptbahnhof. Day pass including the train from Warnemunde was a very reasonable €6 - if we had such an excellent well priced integrated transport service in the UK.
We paid €17.50 each to get in and another 50c for the map which you will need. The zoo is in 2 parts- original and contemporary with a tunnel under the road connecting the two. There are some great exhibits here - I will long remember the Maus Haus where a kitchen is filled with a very large number of mice running loose. Superb. The Darwinarium was a very impressive building showing the science of evolution. There is a fabulous display of primates including gorillas and orang utangs. Fascinating. Animals all appeared very happy and well cared for - the polar bears were spontaneously diving into their very large pool happily whilst one was getting into food which had been frozen into a ball of ice.
Less impressive were the lions- we did not see them at all though roars were easily audible. There are a number of exhibits which either need updating or are in the process. There is a ‘development in progress’ feel at times here and that is why this is a 4 star review only.
There are numerous cafes- pricing levels seem similar to those in town. We stopped for some very welcome cold drinks in one.
In summary this is an excellent place to spend your day when your ship is in port and you don’t fancy the long haul down to a Berlin. In time I am sure this will merit a 5 star review.

I never expected a place like Rostock to have a zoo as amazing as this one! It’s huge and there are soooo many animals to look at. My favourites are the Marabou Storks, the one-winged eagle and the monkey. The restaurants are overpriced (and the coffee horrible) so I’d recommend bringing a packed lunch.
