A short ride up on the gondola, or if you are more energetic a meandering walk up the hillside will see you to the monument. The monument took nearly 12 years to build and symbolises the unification of Germany. The views from here of the Rhine valley are spectacular and definitely worth the effort.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 31 May 2024

Do yourself a favor and take the walk up and down to see this attraction. The walk takes you through vineyards that look over the river and the town of Ruedesheim. It is just a beautiful hike. When you get to the top they have a cafe where you can get a bite to eat and relax with a glass of wine from the vineyards you hiked through. This was a really beautiful afternoon.

The size of the monument is impressive!
There are also several benches for you to sit, take a breather and enjoy the amazing view.
You can walk up there or you can take the "Seilbahn" (cable car) for about 9 € (return tickets). Visiting the monument is free.

Whilst I do undertand the historical significance of this monument and the great views from it I did not find it very special.
This monument was established in the wake of the German defeat of France in the Franco-PrussianWar in 1871.
The monument is high and imposing i and located on a pedestal and visible from some distance the statue is raising the Holy Roman crown in her right hand, and holding the Imperial Sword in her left.
Of greater enjoyment was the cable car ride from the town.

The drive through the vineyards to the monument is very beautiful. Parking (€4.--) is OK, the grounds are well maintained all year round. The monument is impressive and an important witness to our history. (German Empire) Very beautiful view of the Rhine Valley and Rüdesheim. In summer by cable car or if there is time on foot, as I did with fellow hoteliers 30 years ago at the invitation of the Breuer family from Rüdesheim Castle. Mr. Breuer led us from Rüdesheim to the monument, then we planted several Riesling vines and hiked on to Assmannshausen. We took the boat back to Rüdesheim. You can do the tour any time - unfortunately without culinary delights in the Krone in Assmannshausen, which is unfortunately closed.

A beautiful monument, a stunning view, and picturesque scenery. You could spend an afternoon exploring the trails in the forest at the top. It was very hot when we visited so we rode the tram to the top which was fun and convenient. It would be a beautiful hike through the vineyards as well.

Perfect view of Rhine from above. Down the Rhine is it also a majestic view. The food kiosk has still a lot to improve though. It would've been a much better experience if up there, there is a better restaurant or wine bar.

How long did it take to hike to the monument?
I am getting to Rudesheim around 7:30 AM, and prefer not to wait 2 hours for the cable cars to open
Written 1 June 2024
We took the cable car but I estimate it would take up to two hours to hike depending upon the speed you walk and the weather

Hoi,
Kun je deze wandeling, de totale trip zoals omschreven ook met ouderen maken.
M.a.w. is de wandeling zwaar vanaf het Jagdschloss naar het Niederdenkmal?
Dank voor je reactie.

We will be going on an Avalon trip this July. We plan on skipping the Siegfried's Mechanical Museum since we have seen it already. Will we have sufficient time to visit the town and also go to the top and back on the gondola? How much time approximately should we allocate to walk form the town to the gondola, take pictures from the summit and then return down and subsequently walk back to the ship? Also, is the open air gondola which is only for two people very small? I am concerned that my wife may be somewhat nervous about using it. Thank you for your advise.

The gondolien is indeed for two Persons but it is comfortable. We visited the place outside the peak tourist season and did not need to queuing for the ticket office. July might be different. Better to reserve time for that or check out if the have online booking which could make it quicker. If you have time it is also nice to walk back instead taking the gondola. On the walking trip back to the village you see lovely wine fields and a monastery with their winery.

Thanks for all your reviews on Great Cable Car Ride up to Niederwald Monument”. I really want to do this after reading your reviews. Can someone tell me where you go to find this cable car from where Vikign docks? Within walking distance. Thanks
Written 6 April 2016
Are you on the river cruise from Holland To Switzerland - Viking River cruises uses one of the main docks available on contract. After crossing the road and railway you look for hotel post and hotel droselberger. The drosselgasse is between these. A very narrow vine covered alley way with lots of wine cellars. A Rüdesheimer is essential!!!
Once at the top turn right and you follow the cobbled path, you cannot miss the cable car.
When you are up there you can walk the woodlands away from the cable car you used and go down a different one to assmannshousen and then jump a ten min train ride back for around €2.50 per person - Towards Hamburg not Köln. It is the same side as the station house.
Feel free to ask further questions and Bon Voyage!

What is the easiest way to reach this monument from FFT central station? Is it cable car or a chair lift that is there? Because we are travelling with a kid of 7 yrs. Can the three of us manage in 1 car?
Written 26 July 2015
It is a cable car, but open to the elements, I'm not sure if they allow an adult and child to sit together on one side, it's like swing boats.

Hello
I was wondering how long the cable car takes to go from Rudeshiem to the Niederwald Monument
Thank you
john Cliffe

Sorry John, the cable car was closed when we went so we cheated, caught a taxi up and took the walk back down through the vineyards. The best walk ever which measures about 1.5 -2kms, but all downhill.
Taxi cost us10-15euros to go up and they are outside the train station on the main street.
I can't imagine the cable car would take more than 10-15 minutes. The longest part would be the wait in the busy season or so I am told.
Sorry, I could not help further.
