The fort, was rebuilt more than 120 years ago. It stands high on the Saalburg Pass in the Taunus Mountains next to Bad Homburg which is close to Frankfurt.. It watched over the former frontier of the Roman Empire, the Limes. Surrounded by the ruins of a Roman village with temples shaded by ancient trees, the Saalburg evokes the atmosphere... More

I lived in Frankfurt in the late 1990s and made a trip out to see the Saalburg fort with my wife and 1-year old daughter. Getting there was (and still is) a real challenge. At that time the only option we were aware of was the combination of train to Bad Homburg followed by the bus to Saalburg. As some... More

This fort gives you a much better impression of what the roman lifestyle was like compared to just seeing pictures in a museum. It is impressive to walk up the front gates and go through them as the Romans did centuries ago. The insight into the everyday life of a Roman was better here than many places I have visited.... This is a must for all those interested in Roman history. Good for adults and children alike. Take a camera! There are some excellent forest walks starting from Saalburg.

Highly recommended if you are in the area with a car. Easy parking, wonderful Taberna serving historical Roman fare including delicious spiced wines, and all at very reasonable prices. Our kids (3 boys ages 4, 8, 10) love wandering around the open sections of the fort, climbing to the top of the walls pretending to be roman legionnaires keeping a... More

We took the train to Bad Homan and tried to get the #5 bus to the museum. Even though I found the schedule online that gave the weekday times we found out the bus wasn't running on weekdays. So we had a lovely train ride out and back.

I've been to multiple outdoor archaeological parks in Europe, Saalburg is an excellent example. One of the oldest OAPs in the world Saalburg presents the finds in a beautiful rebuild Roman fort. The video presentations are well done and the entire place is fairly interactive. Try and visit on the weekend to catch some educational re-enactors! Great place for kids... More

If you really want to get a feel for Roman military architecture this has to be near the top of the list of options. There's something here for all the family, stuff to do, walks to walk with plenty of information without getting too bogged down. This was my third visit over a 12 year period and I've found new... A truly interesting tour, of the best restored castle of its type ,from the era of Roman occupation. The tour is given in the German language so if you don't have the language skills , keep your interpreter close. The history on display speaks for itself .

We went with a motley crew - grandparents, kids, friends and everyone enjoyed it. We had an English speaking tour provided and it was definitely worth it. The kids really engaged in the subject despite only know of Romans through Asterix and we all found something fascinating out during our visit.
