Stumbled upon this cute neighbourhood and loved it. Feels like Berlin, with a lot of restaurants and nice bars. Visited it with children and felt very welcome. Nice shops, good food and great atmosphere!
I'd love the Schanze and Karoviertel. You still can feel the alternative spirit in this area. although it's gentrification moves on it's still a cosy place to be in the morning as in the evening. get a coffee and watch what's going on and enjoy....More

Just get out of Hamburg centre and port for a while. This area to the west has many bars and restaurants and is obviously much 'en vogue'. Artists, young people, trendy shops, and yes, beggars and drunks. All in all a pleasant atmosphere.
