The Catholic Cathedral of Hamburg is simple and beautiful, but the most amazing part is the mosaic on the apse of the altar, which depicts the Coronation of the Virgin Mary and immitates byzantine mosaics! It's really worth visiting it only for this mosaic!

Called in briefly to escape a pre-thunderstorm heatwave! Attractive altar with stained glass windows and lots of gold leaf in evidence! Close to the Aussenalster. Worth a quick stop.

Simple symmetrical design of a church but is imposing and packs a punch in the St Georg part of Hamburg. Located in a quite street you need to track it down as the church is surrounded by other buildings it is worth looking for. It...More

I came across this large church while exploring Hamburg. Located only a few blocks from the main train station (hauptbahnhof), the building with its twin towers stands out as you approach it.

A bit of history, a bit different from the other churches and in a very mixed area makes for an enjoyabe detour in an otherwise very bohemian neighbourhood.

This church is more typical, not so different as some others in Hamburg. Still a beautiful and cool one, inside and especially outside. The outter part is covered with those orange bricks that, for me at least, are characteristic of the architecture in Hamburg.

Domkirche St. Marien is a beautiful Catholic Cathedral, quite imposing yet much appealing ,red bricked building with twin spires.A prominent statue of Bishop Ansgar, who lived in the 9th century is in the courtyard, alluding to Hamburg's Catholic past before it embraced Lutheranism. The Church inside...More
