Most interesting area in Hamburg's habour
These old storage houses are both unique and beautiful. They cover a huge area and they are homes of many different shops, museums and Event location. Take your time and walk (!) through this place or you can do a boat trip.

    Hamburg history
Speicherstadt is like taking a trip back in time. It's an oddly beautiful place whose literal translation is 'Storage City.' As you might expect from the name, the area was built to cater for the huge amount of imports flowing into Hamburg port in the late nineteenth century. Have a wander over the famous Brooksbrücke Bridge into the heart of Speicherstadt. Take a camera and appreciate the German architecture and general atmosphere of the region. Set out in blocks named in sequence with letters of the alphabet, Speicherstadt is a hidden gem in the heart of a bustling city.

Lovely for a wander around on a sunny day
We walked from Rathaus down to the beautiful and huge red brick buildings of the warehouses. They span a vast area, and iron bridge walkways of this area. It is a vast area, housing different quirky museums, restaurants and working warehouses. The iron foot bridges are a nice way of crossing the canals and exploring this huge neighbourhood.

    Canals and architecture
This is an old brick warehouse district accessed by canals. The buildings have been converted to offices and homes, and there are several museums and attractions in the area to visit. I enjoyed strolling along the canals and walkways while enjoying the architecture.

The old warehouses of Hamburg port are worth a walk around, and with the canals in between it's all rather quant on a good weather's day.

Wouldn't say its a must-see in Hamburg though. Unless particularly interested in architecture, since the buildings themselves are loaded with details to see in between all those bricks.

City Hall, Alster and St. Pauli are great areas, but my favorite in Hamburg is Hafen City, aka the warehouse district.

It's rare that Unesco has included this area on its list, even though it is almost entirely new. This restoration was considered to be of such high quality. Even some of the architects' stylistic jokes can be forgiven for their efforts and creativity.

And now, when the gloomy “warehouse” buildings on the canals are complemented (more and more) by modern architecture, you can walk around HafenCity, constantly receiving aesthetic pleasure. I'm ready to walk here for hours. Really like.

The Speicherstadt is not only fabulously preserved, but also very well-kept and clean. We took a boat tour through the Speicherstadt, which taught us a lot about its history. The next day we just walked along it, and even though the tall buildings can seem overwhelming, it is very beautiful and there is something to see or visit on every corner.
The City Points help tourists to find their way around, and at regular intervals there are boards that list museums, attractions, toilets, etc., including the distance you have to walk.

The Speicherstadt, built from 1883 onwards, has a very eventful past: First, many apartment blocks were demolished - thousands of residents were relocated in favour of commercial development.

During World War II, air raids destroyed half of the buildings. During reconstruction, emphasis was placed on a reconstruction that was as faithful to the original as possible.

Today, as a world cultural heritage site, not only is the Speicherstadt itself an outstanding

sightseeing attraction, the old warehouses also contain unique visitor magnets, such as the Miniatur Wunderland.

In my opinion, the transition to the modern Hafencity

(Sandtorkai) is the only thing that is not particularly successful: a wide aisle separates the old from the new - a car-friendly solution that is not visually convincing.

Magnificent ensemble of the port city. It is fascinating to see how the port was expanded at the time, how these buildings were built to conduct trade and shipping. But it is also very nice to see that trade, commerce and new companies are still present there. Nice little gastronomy along the water. Always new perspectives, e.g. at the Elbe Castle.

Almost skiped this place, but glad I didn't. These massive buildings lining up on a row like this is a bit mezzmerising to watch. I could have walked more in the area. So many bridges and elevated walk paths crossing over each otehr that there is alway a new angle to see. Highly recommend a walk in this area if the wather is good.

Very interesting, very colorful and incredibly cared for and preserved. It is impressive to know the history of this part of the city, and to walk through these streets while you imagine the history.
Some of the buildings have curious shops and businesses, such as the miniature museum.

When visiting Hamburg, a walk through the Speicherstadt is a must. It is impressive to walk through this unique ensemble of "the 'city of warehouses' built between 1885 and 1927 with its network of streets, canals and bridges, as well as the modern brick architecture of the office building complexes for port-related uses from the 1920s to the 1950s." During our visit, we were also lucky that our hotel, The Westin, was very close to the Speicherstadt, so we visited it several times (and also stopped off at the Speicherstadt coffee roastery - definitely recommended!).

If you have time, it is a very nice place to walk around. Every single street has something nice: restaurants, art, backery, stores, history... I really recommend you just go and have fun, take a fresh air and look around. It is wonderful. I made it with 2 small kids and they enjoyed.
