About
The CAP SAN DIEGO, built in 1961, is a unique testimony to seafaring and is berthed in her old home harbour of Hamburg as a »museum you can touch« since 1986. She is the last of the classic cargo ships, referred to as the "White Swan of the South Atlantic." There are rooms to let and cabins to rent. A round tour onboard the CAP SAN DIEGO leads the visitor to: cargo holds, loading gear, mooring and anchoring equipment, palaverdeck, lifeboats, swimming pool and arbour, bridge, chart room and communications room, captain’s cabin, dining room and passenger cabins, galley, pantry and mess crew accommodations and the engine room. Since 2015 there is an english audio guide version available on board. An English Booklet containing a tour of the Ship is also available for you during the duration of your stay on board.

We toured the ship as a ‘wet weather’ activity and it was quite an eye-opener, having never been on such a vessel. The tour includes bridge, crew’s quarters, passengers’ quarters (I think you can stay on the ship as a hotel) deck and engine room. This era of cargo carrying is as remote to youngsters as the days of sail. There is a little cafe as well.

I recently stayed in a single cabin on the CAP San Diego for 3 nights and it was truly the experience of a lifetime. I realize I sound like an advertisement here, but I’m happy to do it. Staying on this ship is phenomenal!
They offer 4 single cabins, 4 double cabins, and the captain’s cabin. Just like a hotel. The only differences are that you pay in full upon arrival, and you leave your key with the steward on your way out and pick up your key on your way back onboard. If the steward isn’t available, you just ring the bell. Simple. Easy. And the prices are very very reasonable, especially when you consider what you get. And the location is awesome!
At the time of my stay (June 2016) the payment policy was stated via email as being cash Euros upon arrival only, but when I arrived I was given the option of paying via credit card. Excellent surprise that!
Keep in mind that when you see pictures on this website of cabins on the ship, the vast majority of those pics are not the cabins for guests. They are pics of the display cabins that you can see when you tour the ship. They’re examples of the cabins that the crew used. The pics of the actual cabins that you would get when you book a cabin for a stay are the pics of the really really nice looking cabins. There are only a few pics here, but there are more pics on the CAP San Diego website. And, if you view the ship’s website in German you can view a video that shows the cabins.
My cabin was spotless. The bathroom was super clean and had everything one would need. Water pressure was excellent with plenty of hot water. You could take either a shower or luxuriate in the full tub. The single cabin felt comfortably spacious and included a table and couch. The temperature control was perfect during my stay and the forced air created a perfect white noise to drown out any other sounds on the ship at night. The bunk was perfect for me, but would have been a little tricky if I were taller than 6 feet.
Included with a cabin stay was free cable, coffee/tea, 4 bottled water per day, and a daily cabin cleaning just like in a hotel. The café is really very nice and is open until 6:00pm. Excellent service and if you want breakfast, you simply let them know the day before.
Of course, I took the opportunity to tour the ship during my stay and I was not disappointed. It was like a dream. If you’re a fan of ships then this is the place for you. The CAP San Diego is kept in pristine condition and even just touring the deck and getting to see the rigging and the hold door mechanisms up close was thrilling. Being able to tour the Bridge and the Engine Room is awesome. And, if you’re staying on the ship you can walk along the deck anytime. How cool is that?
There’s no check-out at the end of your stay, as there are no ways to incur additional costs during your stay. When you’re ready to leave, you simply leave your key with the steward and you’re on your way.
And don’t miss the CAP San Diego gift shop at the start of the pier. I practically needed an extra bag to bring home everything I got. There are all kinds of CAP San Diego branded items available: clothing, magnets, keychains, pens, books, pictures, etc. Lots of fun stuff.
Absolutely excellent stay all around. If you’re someone who would really appreciate all of these special/unique things the CAP San Diego offers, then this is extremely highly recommended!

Touring the machine, the hulls, the bridge of this freighter, was just plain cool. It was a cold winters day when we visited. Most parts of the ship are open to visitors, with signs (allthough not always in English) explaining the running of the ship, when it was crossing between Hamburg and Buenos Aires with different kinds of cargo.

An interesting experience to spend a night on the former cargo liner. Whilst the ship is still breathing the style and atmosphere of the 1950s, accommodation is not eligible for romance. The beds are definitely too small for two persons and an additional bed is not really romantic.

It's a big boat and it was interesting to get in. You can visit the machine room, the rooms, go take your selfie in the captain's deck or next to a huge propeller (on the main deck).
You were free to wander around but there was little explained (I can't remember if there was a guided visit but maybe it'd have been better).
Don't go there if you have problem in your knees, as it has really steep stairs.

This ship was built 1961 and most of the signs are in German and English, The machine room covering four decks of the ship is impressive for technical buffs. Ask for the free English leaflet.

The restored boat in the harbor is well worth a visit, make sure to take the audio guide (if you know German), though I have been told, they will have it in English too by autumn or the end of the year.

I have no other reference in Hamburg, but I liked a lot this ship. You can go around completely inside, including the machine room. That was very interesting for me. You can visit all the levels and if you want, you can book a room - as it also works as a hotel. You can find also a Bistro, where they serve some food - I haven´t tried, but the smelling was good. It´s also possible to rent some areas for events, including a small swimming pool in the deck. In the lower areas, there was a nice museum of the imigrants and also a interesting photography exhibition.

We spent a couple of hours on this old boat situated in the harbour at Hamburg near Baumwald u- Bahn. We had a good nosey around on all the levels of this old ship even the bridge which affords an excellent view if the harbour. It only costs 7 euros to get in and they had a museum with lots of information about the problems Germany had in the 18/19 centuries with emigration . Very interesting. Would recommend although there a LOT of steep stairs to go up and down esp in the machine rooms and below!! No wheelchair access. Not good for small children in my opinion (yes I do have kids).

This turned out to be a nice morning's visit. There were plenty if different rooms to see and you can venture through the engine room and all the way down the prop shaft. Very long! The cafe on board has some nice cakes. Admission price is quite cheap. There is an exhibition in the cargo hold which is quite interesting if you follow the story around. Contrary to what others say there are quite a few signs in English now. Interesting even if not all are in English. Great for rainy days. U Bahn station nearby
