A wide ranging collection is contained within this museum. It contains works from East Asia, Art Nouveau, Musical Instruments, Baroque & Renaissance objects and Classical works. It also has some Egyptian works. There is also a lot of space given to exhibitions, for example from their photography collection. On the ground floor a number of period rooms are set up... More

The museum is OK, it you like looking at other peoples ' tat! I thought the exhibitions were in-cohesive, and seemed to be thrown together. The exhibition on design was well thought out, but the rest seemed incidental, to fill some large spaces. It was almost as if they [the museum] have been donated pieces from the attics of dead... If you are interested in beautiful objects and design in general, the museum is a must. Located a few steps from the Hauptbahnhof, it is easy to reach from anywhere in Hamburg. My particular interest is Art Nouveau and the museum has several rooms dedicated to this style. So much to see and in general, well documented. there was a... More

The museum is rather big with interesting objects: some beautiful and potentially useful, others less so. Worth a visit, if you are interested in design.

This museum always delivers great exhibitions meeting the current Zeitgeist. It is propably the best museum in Hamburg regarding contemporary cultural topics. I'm always delighted how much the topics shown there are a great inspiration for work & life at the same time.

This was my favorite museum in Hamburg. There's many different tings to see including musical instruments, a "Cult of (Religious) Relics" section (my favorite), vintage electronics, vintage clothing, animation, arts and crafts of all sorts. Allow about 2-3 hours.

A beautiful setting in the basement of an old manor house with a mote et al, strongly suggest a meal with a lovely bottle of wine in the rustic setting of the manor house basement. Loved the venison and pork. Service a bit stressed due to one line chef manning the place- but the atmosphere and the food more than... More

I didn't really get the massive sneakers exhibition I have to say, but the extensive ceramics collection was quite good. The complete lack of interpretive information to explain the features and background to the items was disappointing. Having a collection is one thing. Giving it a context is much more valuable.

The museum is really large, you need more than 2 hours to enjoy it properly. There are very interesting sections. Art from Japan, China and Korea, der Spiegel Kantine and islamic art sections are highlights. Plus, the temporary exhibitions are really cool most of the time.

A definite MUST in Hamburg, it's easy to get there since it's a couple of blocks from the Cenral Station. Entrance is not expensive at all when you get to see the whole museum. There was a Manga and japanese art exhibition when we visited it, amazin selection. There are also all sorts of exhibitions, from Sneakers to ancient history.... More
