We had a great time until the last ride where I accidentally took the safety down on the ride. I thought it was single ones and not one whole. Also me and my friend are not fluent in German so any warnings about it must have been lost in translation. Nevertheless when the guy operating the ride discovered the mistake, he made a big fuss of trying to find out who did it instead of just lifting the safety immediately and getting on with his job. He then accused me and my friend (which was right) but he spoke no English so we couldn’t tell him it was a mistake. And then he threw us out. Very disappointed that a simple mistake that (anyone could have made) got us kicked out.

Hello Josefinec, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour. And we are absolutely sorry for the misunderstanding! It is very important that our guests are safe that´s why our team member was that strick. But it was a misunderstanding. And we are sorry for that. Your Hamburg Dungeon Team

We visited Hamburg Dungeon whilst in port on a cruise, having pre-booked tickets through tripadvisor. The only reason I couldn't give this 5 stars is that we had to do the tour in German as they only do English language tours at 10am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, despite the obvious difficulties and missing out on a lot of the fun due to not understanding most of what was said by the characters on the tour, it was still great fun, and really good value for money. If I am ever back in Hamburg I would do it again whilst they have an English language tour on so I could enjoy the bits I missed. I would say younger children might find this too scary as it is dark and the characters are so convincing at scaring you! It is also quite interactive, members of the audience/group are bought in to the action by the cast. There are a couple of little rides along the way, a water flume and a free-fall drop (which we skipped due to a member of the family having a heart condition) but you can bypass both if needed. highly recommended but check that you are going when you can understand the language!

This is an interactive event. If you only speak English, you should attend at one of their scheduled times for an English tour.

There are two times they take photos of you within your group (even a group of 2). You start out with a photo shoot, which of course they offer you a chance to buy it at the end. So make it a good one, especially if you're the person who enjoys such photos. The other photo is during the floor drop ride, which occurs at the very end. Some planning on your part would allow you to pose for this.

Note: At the start of the attraction, they show several broken phones and cameras and ask you to secure them and turn them off. There is only one point where they could end up like this and that is during the free-fall drop at the very end of the attraction. At no other time would you have any issue getting your things broken. I had my sunglasses in my shirt pocket. During the free-fall ride, they flew out (which interestingly enough was in the photo).

While there is a little history in the tour, you aren't going to come out a historian. There's a torture chamber where they have some fun with you (my wife was jailed, I was strapped to a chair). There's an Inquisitor, two people are called to the stand. Others I'll let you discover.

The actors are terrific. I would return just to see them in action again.

And of course, you're wondering about the bathroom. Well, I think it is only in the men's room, but there are some vending machine items in there that I've never seen before in the USA. I'll leave it at that.

Oh, and there's a foosball table in the waiting area outside the restrooms (Water Closets they call them, look for the "WC"). It costs 50 cents and is worth a round.

Please click the thumbs up if you read this far and found it helpful.

Nov 2016 • Solo
Following my visit to the awesome Miniatur Wunderland (during my November 2016 trip to Hamburg), I decided to also check out the Hamburg Dungeon.

I had heard something about the Dungeons (attraction in various cities), but hadn't looked to deeply into the matter, and wasn't sure what to expect. The Hamburg Dungeon is an interactive experience that takes you through some episodes of the cities (darker) history, that is led by actors. Not all the historical information given is going to be 100% accurate.
Here in Hamburg there are also 2 rides that are part of the attraction, a boat ride which is like an extremely mini-version of Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and a small free fall tower.

No phones/cameras allowed during the attraction. There is a photo op just before starting the tour, with a photographer and you can purchase that picture at the end if you so wish. The picture is best done if there are at least 2 of you (so not really great for solo travellers).

The walk up rate is €25.95 though online prices are lower, and the Hamburg Card also offers a discount. Back in 2016, during my visit, the Hamburg Card discount was a whopping €9 (making it cheaper than the online offer), looking at the info material for 2017 it seems that this discount has been reduced to €7 (and in line with the online offer).
I think the discounted offers (online or with the HC) are a fair price for the value you get with all that goes into creating the experience, but the walk-up rate is to high.

There are some English language tours offered here, but they are extremely limited. Only on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) and on some holidays, and only with a 1000h entry time. If you would like the English tour, do check their website to make sure that they have one when you're planning on visiting (as the days and times might change).

I went with a German tour, and had to wait about 25 minutes for the next available one. I have since been to the Amsterdam Dungeon as well, and in Amsterdam they cycle through the tours much quicker and offer regular English-language tours. But I suppose overall the Hamburg Dungeon does get less Visitors than other locations.

We were a relatively small group, most people were there with a significant others, me and another person were the only solo travellers. Afterwards I thought it would be much more fun when you do have someone to share the experience with, as the actors will interact with people on the tour and interaction is better when there's more of you.

The tour started with a very Gothic looking Fella giving us an introduction before being joined by his slightly deranged "sister", then it was off into an elevator and through the Gothic-looking-Fella's Family's Library to explore different aspects of Hamburg's darker history.

Some SPOILERS AHEAD

We were taken to:
- a torture chamber (Middle Ages), where a couple were called on stage.
- a trial of the Holy Inquisition (13th Century), where 3 from the group had to stand trial (and of course all were found guilty of the charges).
- the Labyrinth of the Lost, a mirror maze where we all got lost until we were "saved" by one of the actresses.
- the Black Death (1350), where we found ourselves at the University and an autopsy.
- the Great Hamburg Fire (1842), where we the "deranged lady" from the entrance claimed that she had set the fire (in reality it started in a cigar factory).
- a Pirate Tavern at the times of the Pirate Klaus Störtebeker (1401), then on to a ship to try to save Störtebeker from his planned execution after he had been captured by the Hansa Authorities, unfortunately we were to late to save him.
- Smuggler Gangs in Hamburg (19th Century), with the aforementioned boat ride.
- The Tragic Story of Maria Katharina Wächtler (18th Century), sad, spooky and scary.
- and as final attraction we got on the Free Fall tower. Some seats are occupied by skeletons.

They do seem to bring new parts to the attraction, and take out others over time, so even if you had been years ago, check it out as there could be something new.

All in all it lasts about 90 minutes, I had a fun time, learned some things and decided to read up a bit more on them.

The quality of the experience does hinge a lot on the actors, but also in part on the group you're with, since it's all an interactive experience.

I did like it enough that I checked out another of the Dungeons when I visited Amsterdam a few months later, and would check out others when visiting other cities where they are located.

The Dungeons are operated by Merlin Entertainment, if you visit multiple Merlin Entertainmente attractions you might also want to look into pricing of their Annual Passes.

Please be advised that the actors do only speak german. There might be English tours, bit please get informed before you enter the Hamburg Dungeon.
And do get a 2-4-1 Voucher, otherwise it is far too expensive. you will be lead from one room into another... the actors are not very motivated, I think. And one actor gets several roles...
Nothing too fear about, well done but no need to see...
Please plan at last 30 min to 2 hour waiting time or get the tickets in advance

Wow, I am glad I didn't pay 25.50 EUROS for this. Online prices are much cheaper. It's fun and has some local Hamburg history tied in which is cool and cruel. The fear and frightening factor is not as severe as I had expected but it's definitely well advised that kids under 10 aren't allowed (allusions to castration as a means of torture) and those 10-14 only with an adult. I saw the German show and much of its wording seemed to be directly translated from English - just didn't sound that natural in German. The acting was pretty good but I didn't like that you had to go through the entire thing with a rather large group of people. It's tight in some of the rooms and you don't have a chance to see everything because it's so crowded. Although it would be a lot more fun if you were allowed to take pictures or they would at least include the initial photo that they take in the entry price. Didn't feel like paying another 10 Euros for it.

I'm surprised to see this attraction so low in the TripAdvisor list. It is very interesting, the actors are really good and the place is very well constructed and decorated. I warn you, if you don't speak German, go to the English show (weekends), and go early because is a really popular place. Yes, is a bit more expensive than the regular tourist attraction, but is worth it, and you can find coupons for it in many hostels! Ask your hotel/hostel receptionist.

We opted to have an English tour of the dungeons, since neither myself nor my friend speak German beyond asking for a wine. With only a few exceptions, the staff were absolutely brilliant and spoke English almost perfectly. There were friendly and very eager to interact with us, especially to scare me! Before we began the tour, one of them even got out a cardboard cut-out of Prince William - since we went shortly after the Royal Wedding - and started making jokes with us about him! It was a very enjoyable visit.

*We visited here in May 2011 but I can't select it as an option!

I expected something different, but it was ok and not that scary that I thought it might be. A bit expensive though for what it is...
