    Large
A large station, arrived and departed from here, used a hub for S Bahn most days here. Plenty of food outlets and as you can imagine a lot of people milling about. Bit uncomfortable outside main entrance due to "hanging about people" which I'm afraid doesn't give a good impression to first time visitors to Hamburg that arrive by train.

Great food hall and shopping complex inside.
We didn’t catch a train to or from here but caught a bus to here to get on the hop on hop off bus! we were very surprised at the amount of restaurants, and the food hall and shopping available inside the station, and a lot of the vendors spoke English. Very impressed! If only we had known the food hall was there before we ate a very mediocre and expensive for what we ordered meal at the cafe outside and served by unfriendly rude owners, who couldn’t even force a smile, or be polite enough to say Thankyou when being paid. Clean toilets in the complex but directions were a bit hard to follow to find them so had to ask some security guards there who were most helpful!

    Impressive station
This is a suitably impressive and imposing main station. There are large concourses which are well stocked with shops and food and beverage outlets and the main platform area is huge. Well located in central Hamburg.

    Very Busy Place
An extremely busy train station with hundreds of people coming and going. We bought our tickets from a machine and it took some effort to get the machine to accept our credit card. Otherwise all went well. There are some characters about so watch your wallet and belongings. Very, very busy.

Anyone coming from the north and heading south should arrive at Hamburg Central Station before 10:46 p.m. A true story that happened on the night of December 2nd/3rd illustrates my negative assessment:
As the IC 397 from Copenhagen was broken, after hours of repair attempts it was decided that the journey would end in Flensburg. All passengers heading for Hamburg were packed into 2 regional trains, one of which was cancelled. In short, we all arrived in Hamburg at 12:35 a.m., completely exhausted. We found out:
The next train was the EC to Interlaken at 4:37 a.m. For the 4 hours of waiting we were offered:
- To the hotel. At our own expense. With the option of getting some of it back later.
- To McDonalds to wait
If you ever have that choice: Go to the hotel! None of the remaining passengers went to the hotel. Everyone climbed the stairs up the gallery to McDonalds. I have a walking disability. Can only climb stairs. But I had no other choice.
Not a single escalator up to the gallery was in operation! And only a single elevator, at the level of platform 11...
Not only does the main station not have its own waiting room, it might make sense to cooperate with a restaurant company here.
It's just stupid when McDonalds runs out of sauces on this very night (!) and the whole place closes as a result. "Closed for technical reasons" was emblazoned on the entrance door.
When we asked at the DB counter, we were told: "We can't do that either. It's private." It was cold on this December night. And drafty.
All the waiting shelters on the train tracks: Closed.
Toilets: All closed.
DB Lounge: If you're entitled to them: Closed from 10 p.m.
The last hope in the end was the station mission. There you could only sit in the waiting area, but there was:
Human attention.
At least a warm cup of tea.
A working heater.
A charging point for your cell phone. A relatively clean, functional toilet.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest that the train was broken. Things like that can happen. But the complete incompetence of those responsible for and in the station, who had and have no concept of how to deal with stranded passengers, really bothers me!

The station itself is well equipped with shops, etc. The infrastructure itself is OK. Now for the reason for the not so great advertisement:
There is no place to sit anywhere in the station. Not on the platform, not in the hall. Everything is full, everyone is sitting on the floor. Only in this small food hall are there uncomfortable stools in front of the shops, some of which are so narrow that sitting is almost impossible.

I was travelling with older people who, with their heavy suitcases, didn't know how to get down the stairs to the platform. That happened to many people. There are only escalators going up, not down.

It could be improved. There are no places to sit anywhere 😕

For the fact that Hamburg Central Station is the first thing a rail traveler sees when visiting Hamburg... there should be more to it!

Display boards that don't work... or try to display important information as scrolling text in a tiny window...

Toilet signs that lead to nowhere!!!

And while cashless payments and digitalization are being pushed forward,... women (finally!!) stand in front of the toilet that is NOT signposted and can pee their pants because they don't have any change...
... modern cosmopolitan cities are different!

Travelling through Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (train station), it turned out to be a highlight of my brief visit to Hamburg.
Stunning German Train station - with cast iron roof - a relic of better design days.
Fairly easy to find your way around.
Lots of shops / cafes, left luggage.
Helpful ticket office who are fluent in English - thank you.
Nice first class lounge.
Very busy even on a Sunday.

This is another huge train station in Germany. There are a lot of platforms and so many people.
It was kinda hard to navigate our way around and there wasn't to many places to ask for any kind of help.
There are so many shops and places to grab food like other stations. Everything is open quite late also.

Hamburg Central Station may be beautiful to look at from the outside ...
As the second busiest train station in Europe, we expected more.
We had two hours stay on the way to Sylt and return to Freiburg and could get an idea of it.
Pure chaos during the holiday season, going to the toilet far without proper signage, no waiting room, far too few benches for the elderly and disabled, families with children.
Escalators and elevators broken.
It was more than dangerous on the tracks, too many people are pushing forward, the trains are constantly pulling in.
You don't know if you should go left or right up if you have to change.
A change urgently needed, we will Trips via Hamburg Altona again in the future,
Everything was fine, smaller, clear, clean.
Kind regards, Frick family

I pass through Hamburg Hbf often as I change trains when going south.
This time, as always a bad experience.

Extremely crowded and stressful so most people get pushy. Angry people serving poor quality food. Many people with a hard life who should at least have a bench to sit on.

A rough experience which makes me think twice before booking trains southwards.

You have to go up and down via the platforms, or around the station to get from one side to the other. It is blatantly stupid that a footbridge has not been built. Everything that is said in the loudspeakers is in German, and since it is already an almost unintelligible sound, it will in no way be easier to decipher just two comprehensible words.

The worst boo I know. Overcrowded, tons of beggars, everything broken and ailing. Mostly the tracks are too crowded, it is often on the verge of a panicky situation.
Definitely avoid then possible. Station Dammtor is magnificent.
