The Bremen Roland is a statue of Roland, paladin of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and hero of the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. It was erected in 1404, and it stands in the market square (Rathausplatz), facing the cathedral.

The Roland statue at Bremen is the oldest surviving example of Roland as emblem of city liberties (Stadtrechte). Along with the Town Hall, this statue is part of the UNESCO heritage site "Town Hall and Roland on the Marketplace of Bremen".

The limestone carved statue itself is 5.47 meters tall (17.95 feet); combined with the rostrum and the baldachin the total height is 10.21 meters (33.5 feet).

Apart from the Roland statue, several historical buildings surround the square, making it a wonderful sight.

The statue of Roland, erected in 1404, is the symbol of Bremen. Roland, the military leader, is known from the Roland Song. The approximately 5.5 meter high statue is located directly on Bremen's market square, in the immediate vicinity of the town hall and St. Petri Church and cannot be overlooked. The statue is also part of the world cultural heritage.

The Roland Statue clearly has some stature. An imposing large statue in the old market square - a great historical monument.

Roland was a historic person, who died in the service of Charlemagne about 744 AD during a battle in the Pyrenees - between Moorish Spain and Francia (land of the Franks - eventually to be known as France). Everything else is legend. Over time Roland grew to be one of the great heroic figures of medieval literature (Orlando in Italy) and somehow, on the way, became a symbol of the independence of free cities like Bremen. Note how he stands in front of the Rathaus, with a magical sword (of course) facing the Dom (run by an Archbishop who would, historically, love to get his hands on the property revenues of the Free City of Bremen). Interesting story - odd statue.

The Roland Statue stands in the Market Square of Bremen prominently. It is a picturesque area surrounded by the Cathedral, Old Town Hall, Town Musicians as well as close to the Shopping Plaza near by. Roland, paladin of the first Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne and hero of the Ronceavaux Pass, is shown as the Protector of the City. The place is brimming with visitors on week ends as there are fairs in the Marktplatz. A place one must visit.

Legend has it that should anything happen to the Roland the city would fall, so they keep a replacement in the basement of the city hall.. The Roland is a very nice attraction to see, in the middle of the Aldstadt of Bremen. You can see the old city hall, the famous cathedral, and be amazed.

The Bremen's Roland statue is a symbol of civic liberty and freedom; a protector image for the town, a historical treasure and an attraction to those who want to add it to their UNESCO world Heritage collection lists. I am an enthusiast in history and visiting UNESCO W.H. sites is a must when I travel. During my visit in Hamburg I bought a regional day pass to visit couple of the UNESCO sites in the region. Bremen was one of those. My mission was to see Roland. There are many Roland statues through Germany's former Holy Roman Empire cities. But this Roland is particularly special for its long history of existence and its size. It was first erected in Bremen in 1404 to replace a burned down wooden one .It stands in the market square in front of Town Hall Rathaus and facing town's cathedral St.Petri (Dom) to take its stand for town's civil rights. This large and tall statue was carved out of lime stone. He is protected by stone canopy and a supported column. He carries his legendary unsheathed sword and two-headed Imperial black eagle adorned his golden shiny shield. The story of this legendary figure is the reason attracting many far away visitors to come to Bremen. To get there from Bremen Hautbahnhof, take tram 6E towards Neustadt(new town), crosses river to Domsheide(old city hall and market place). You can visit the UNESCO Town Hall, statue of Roland and St.Petri (Dom). If you need a cool drink, try the nearby Ratskeller, it is also listed on UNESCO W.H. site list.
