I've been waiting a long time to make this pilgrimage back to explore my roots in Bremen. St. Petri Dom allows you to step far back in time to it's beginning. As an English only speaker it's best to read about the church & download self-guided walking tour info before arriving. There are 3 parts to this place: the church (free), the little museum in the back corner (free or donation), and the Tower (about 15 Euros for family of 4). The climb to the top of the Tower is a must! You can see all over Bremen, amazing. However, the climb is very narrow & long so be prepared. The man in the ticket booth for the tower ignored me even though no one else was around but me. I came back later after exploring the church & he proved to be one of the few Germans who are less than willing to assist you just because you can only muster a few German words which is the only reason why I rated this attraction on the lower side.

St. Petri Church, Bremen

Build around 11/12th Century this Church was on our must do/visit list from the beginning.

Besides Market visits, Churches or Places of worship are another fascination of ours, as they tell much about the inhabitants and culture of any place!

Build originally around Roman architecture then around 13/14th & 26th century adopted to the then prevailing gothic style!

Whether it is the humongous heights, the often stunning stained glass windows, the impressive organs, each church has a story to tell!

We were impressed by the build quality and the maintenance of this structure!

Enjoy this little pictorial which can only give a fraction of the impressions we gathered!

St. Petri Dom zu Bremen (St. Peter's Cathedral in Bremen) was originally built during the 9th century on the site of an older timber church. It was rebuilt / enlarged several times, in the 11th, 13th, 16th, 17th, 19th centuries, and finally in the 1950s the damages of WW II were repaired.

The church interior is impressive, but there are little or no explanations on-site.
There is also a treasury in a side chapel, with beautiful paintings, sculptures and frescoes. Entrance both to the church and museum are free (as of June 2024).

St. Petri was founded in the 11th century on the remains of an earlier church. The church, originally built in the Romanesque style, was then rebuilt and expanded in the Gothic style in the 13th century. The church is impressive from the outside due to its size, but the interior is rather plain. If you visit the Bremen Town Hall, the Roland, etc., you should definitely plan a visit to St. Petri.

High ceilings, stained glass, amazing architecture, the rest. Don't miss the museum in the back of the building and the quite room downstairs. A wonderful environment for music. Dating to the medieval period it is an amazing build, having been added to over the centuries. Great for a hot day, but make sure to really take in the awe inspiring experience.

If visiting Bremen, you have to see the Rathaus and St. Peter's Cathedral. Thankfully, they are located in the same beautiful square. The cathedral towers above everything and is a spectacular site to see. I do find the exterior to be more impressive then the interior but I do recommend going inside. A Must if visiting Bremen.

We have visited many beautiful and famous churches during our trip around Europe. By far, the most spectacular church is found in Bremen. Not only is St Peter's Cathedral home to great historical stories, beautiful arches and ceiling decorations, it has an unmistakable feeling about it. Whether or not you are a regular church-goer, you cannot help but 'feel' the church as soon as you enter. It is free to enter and easy to locate. There is no reason to miss this beautiful building. Just make sure you have a minute or two to spare so you can just sit quietly and absorb the atmosphere. Do not rush about as you may miss the carved, wooden internal staircase; one of the most amazing displays of craftmanship I have ever seen.
We are lucky to have found this church as it is not
noted on the major tourist brochures.
The city of Bremen is just lovely and to finish your day with time in St Peter's will create a lasting memory for everyone.
I hope you enjoy St Peter's as nuch as we did.

We visited the mummies in the basement area with a native Bremener. They charge a small fee. Less than $2 each, and there are about 10 mummies to look at. It is interesting to see. There are English sub texts for all of the displays.

This cathedral is worth a visit. It is a Gothic building. There is a small museum. The highlight is the number of organs (five).
