I love the Kino International, once a DDR premiere movie theater and now a York cinema. The architecture is in the Bauhaus style with original 1960s interiors. The foyer is so classy and from the legendary Panorama Bar on the second floor you have a magnificent view of Karl-Marx-Allee, once East Berlin's grand boulevard. Tucked away to the side is the Honecker Lounge, the former reception area for international state guests. The movie theater is very large and has the second largest screen in Berlin. Watching movies on it really enhances the viewing pleasure. You must experience it.

We popped over here after a suggestion from a photographer we met who told us to go and look at the architecture. We came and sat here for an hour or so and enjoyed the beautiful building and a few beers. We were the only people in the lobby but it was perfect. The girl behind the bar was really lovely and even let us look into the cinema. Would definitely encourage others to go and have a lil chilled out beer here.

We had planned to visit the Cafe Moskau over the road from Kino International on our first evening in Berlin, but found that it wasn't open when we walked the short distance up Karl-Marx Allee from our base in Alexanderplatz. Both Cafe Moskau and Kino International are architecturally impressive legacies of the DDR elite's penchant for modern, monumental design and extremely well appointed interior detailing.

Since our German wasn't really up to scratch for watching one of the International's films (though I understand films in English are regularly shown), we limited ourselves to enjoying a drink in the bar area just outside the auditorium. The staff were obliging and spoke good English and the bar served beer, wine and cocktails. For anyone interested in history, architecture, film or all three, I would strongly recommend a visit to the Kino International.

Kino International apparently used to be the no. 1 cinema in East Germany and luckily the interior has been keep in a period style with retro furniture and the dimmed lighting reminded me of East Germany. You can also have a leisurely drink beforehand at the small bar and you can also take the drink into the cinema - in a glass! Curtains that swish open to reveal the screen and comfy seats. Such a lovely experience instead of going to the usual monotonous modern cinemas. Diagonally opposite was a bar in a similar style. It made going to the cinema a real event again. Will definitely chose to go there in preference to the usual cinema chains.

This cinema is great. It feels like diving in some sort of GDR luxury nostalgia, the interior is amazing!

This great movie theatre is supposed to be renovated in the 90ies, but the breath from the East German culture elite still lingers.
The enormous crystal lamps in the luguber lobby bar are shaded by tar from all cigarettes. The chairs are still smelling.
No crowds, cheap tickets, and original version of films with sub titles.
Go there for an authentic experience even before the vast silky curtain opens!

The Kino International is a film theater in Berlin. It is located on Karl-Marx-Allee in former East Berlin and hosted premieres until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The theater was designed and built in the early '60's and has a definite Eastern German feel. The architecture is simple yet effective and has many similarities to library designs in the Western World in the early '60's.

This is a retro theater which means the seating is not of the highly inclined set-up of modern day theaters and the seats are made of a velour type material. Yet watching a classic film in there, or Victoria, which we saw, is magical.

The film Victoria has won many awards in Germany and is a spell-binding Indie type film. If you get a chance to see it, I highly recommend it. You can also drink alcohol while watching the movie, if you like to do that.

This movie theatre is probably one of the top ones in Berlin- with a modern finish and good size, we enjoyed going here and will probably end up returning in the future. There is free seating, so it is important to get there early, but the prices are quite good and unlike some cinemas the sound is not blasting so there is no need to worry about it being too loud. There is a snacks and beverages stand- the selection is not huge but something you would expect and this suited us fine. The only thing I was certainly not pleased about was the location- it is not at all in the middle of the city, and to walk to Alexanderplatz takes at least 10 minutes. We took the U-Bahn here an were very confused because when we exited it looked like we were in the middle of a wasteland, but after gaining a sense of direction we were able to find the movie theatre and everything was fine after that. Overall, a good experience.

There's no popcorn, no gallons of fizzy drinks, no huge queues and no astronomical prices.

Both exterior and interior of the Kino International are exactly as they were in GDR times. It's not difficult to imagine people under a socialist regime coming to view the latest propaganda while being used as propaganda themselves to show how successful the East was.

The architecture and decor is impressive, if restrained, and the hushed tones encourage a sort of reverence, like a shrine to those who suffered under the socialist regime.

The film we watched was a standard piece of Hollywood output, and the contrast with our surroundings was stark.

Definitely worth a visit. If nothing else, it takes the load off after all the walking you'll be doing in Berlin.

A visit KINO INTERNATIONAL is a must – even if you don’t like the film. The movie theater is very typical for it time and context of the prestige cinema in the cold war. Interior and decorating are original and sets the environment. If you happen to be there during the Berlinale, it I seven better as you can see a great film while being there. Note the name of the lounge bar – Walther Ulbricht lounge, it cannot be better.
