I visited the Stasi prison with my 16 year old daughter who is studying German history from this time period. She and I found it a very moving experience. Our guide brought to life the futility and horror of being imprisoned here. Last year we visited the Stasi headquarters so have a pretty good idea now of the life in... More

This building is a big part of DDR history and I went there as part of a school trip. The tour guides are all former prisoners of this prisons and hence, all have a personal story to tell. Never listened to a more interesting and at the same time intimidating tour

Have been here four times with UK school groups. One of the highlights of our Berlin trip every time. Organised school group tour includes a 30 min video followed by 90 minute tour of the place. Watch 'The lives of others' first. Place has a lovely, small cafe and bookshop.

This was a sobering experience, brought to life by an informed guide. Difficult to say it was enjoyable but was a highlight of my trip to Berlin

Mixed emotions - Fantastic Exhibition and English Tour the Guide was wonderful.Very emotional thought provoking 1/2 a day. One of the most provocative memories is of one of the ex head of the Interrogation and prison who is quoted as having no regrets and would do it all again.

We decided to make the journey out to the prison during our trip - it was under an hour from central Berlin via train and then tram, the journey was fairly simple and it's a short walk (<10mins) from the tram stop to the prison. They have guided tours (English tour at 2.30pm) which are very extensive in detailing the... More

Easy to reach: a 20min ride with the M-bahn from Alexanderplatz. Really incredible place to visit. They have managed to preserve the prison in it's original condition. It's really dumbfounding to think about all the injustice that took place here for so many years. Some guides are former prisoners, what gives the German tour a personal touch. We took the... More

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, BUT if you want to understand more about what those in East Berlin ( and beyond) had to endure after the Nazi Party until 1989, then this is eye opening. Our guide, Andrea, was superb in her knowledge and on answering questions. May seem out of the way to get too, but well worth... More

A little bit out of the way but don't let that put you off. We hopped on a bus and asked for directions. Went around on an English tour and visited quite a lot of the prison. Only found out about this place on our second visit to Berlin. Give yourself a good few hours to visit this place.
