The Theater im Keller was founded on January 3rd, 1987, and offers its visitors more than 150 performances every year. Despite the German name (Theater im Keller translates into "theater in the basement"), the theater is on the ground floor rather than in a basement. The name originated in the early years, when the productions took place in a basement vault. As demand grew, Michael Brenncke, the theater's director since 1987, decided to move the production into the premises of a former storefront. Since then, the studio theater has established itself as a small playhouse in Berlin's "Reuterkiez" district, and its reputation has spread well beyond the city limits. Primarily, travesty shows are produced and performed here, because that is precisely what the Theater im Keller is renowned for. Since 2009, a contemporary, stylish bar and lounge can be found in the foyer.

Well, this was a surprise for me. First turned out as a restaurant , but after also a theater. So cool ! :) The show was magnificient ! I haven't had a laugh like that since i don't know when. Lights, music, dance, all were at the best , at the highest glance. For sure, i would come back for... More

One of the best shows I've been to. We all laughed ourselves to tears. Most of it was in German, with a couple songs in English, but it didn't stop my non-German speaking friends from liking it as much as I did. The whole extras (friendliness on the bar, a table booked with drinks waiting at the breaks) made it... More

I was really lucky to have the opportunity to attend this show during my visit in Berlin. That was fantastic! So much fun, art, attraction and energy these artists had. I can call them "super stars". Also the owner was very nice and friendly. We had the possibility of ordering some drinks and meals before the show and in the... More

A fun thing to do while visiting Berlin. I think I was the only tourist there. Basically a comedy show. Don't worry if your German is limited - it still is extremely funny. Several times during the show (I took in the classic show) the audience would start singing along to the music. There is a cafe/lounge attached to the... More

Me and my partner went to the mid-week drag show (the only non-Germans in the audience) and had a great time! Whilst it is about 50/50 German/English (majority of songs in English though) - the drag queens' comic timings were on point. Even the comedic dialogue in German wasn't lost on us. And the ones who actually sang instead of... More

Sassy, kinky, witty and hilarously funny. Very entertaining, full of glitz and glamour with some full on choreography. Unfortunately, my German was not good enough to catch some of the dirty jokes, but they sure seemed funny. Recommend to anyone visiting Berlin!

How can you visit Berlin and not do the Cabaret thing? A group of six of us, some straight and some gay, had dinner in the attached tapas restaurant (quite good, and good drinks) and then attended the transvestite show (not really in a basement). Intimate, and fun. Half in German, half in English, with an intermission. Songs done in... More

TRAVESTIE IM KIEZ. This Show is not to be loss! Wonderful. A group of 6 artists, each of them very professional and very passionate, give life to this Travestie spectacle with dance, music and high level of irony. Congratulations to them. Complimenti! I will STRONGLY reccomend you to watch it. The Theatre, also, is a little perl in Neukölln. It... More

My son and I enjoyed an evening of singing and dancing with some lively and colourful ladies! The place was packed solid and offered dining before the event, although we only went for the show. The basement theatre is small and has about 40 seats , you must book as it's clearly popular. The singing was both mimed and real... More

Neighbourhood Profile
No Berlin neighbourhood is more popular with the young and jet-set crowd than the old worker's district of Neukölln. With so many Turkish settled here, the area became known as “Little Istanbul“. Today the percentage of foreigners is still high and visitors still frequent the Turkish shisha bars. In the daytime, they also visit the designer shops and sit by the canal in one of the street cafés up and down Westerstrasse or at Maybachufer, having a beer and waving to the sightseeing boats as they float by. But at night, Neukölln is dominated by increasingly young, alternative, and international crowds. This is particularly evident in the northern section of the district where there are many bars, funky clubs, galleries and restaurants. There, the night never seems to end.
