Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Big cupola in the middle of the main store, show piece reminding of the glass dome at the Paris branch, forms center piece of surrounding indoor boutiques, hats, scarves, bags and jewellery on main floor, food and drink one floor down, brand stores down in the corridor. Interesting for some exploration and window shopping, take away food selection mediocre at best. Pricey. Still, nice visit.

A friend from Melbourne (visiting family in Germany) and I visited Galeries Lafayette Berlin after lunch elsewhere in Berlin. I was disappointed with the range and price of stock (nothing like GL in Paris, which is amazing-my daughter and I were there in 2011)! I was not surprised to hear that this store will be refurbished soon.

I had a quiche/salad combo and mineral water for lunch. It was great. However, the waiter there ripped me off. In Germany, it is customary to round up to the next Euro or add another euro or two for great service (and I mean great - it's perfectly acceptable not to tip because waiters there earn a living *salary*). The way you do this ordinarily is to hand the waiter cash if you don't have correct change and say you want X amount back, leaving him with the money owed plus whatever tip you supply. Shady waiter at the quiche counter in Galeries "mis-heard" my request - and no "vier" and "sechs" do not sound anything alike - and gave me back two less Euros than I requested, giving himself a nearly 3-euro tip - for a counter lunch!!! I saw what happened but was too stunned to say anything. And when I realized what had happened, I was left to either a) make a scene, or b) let him keep the money.

This happened to me once before in Munich, and I made the scene. The guy begrudgingly gave me my money but made sure to make me feel like a cheapskate in the process. This time I did not make the scene, so I got ripped off. Moral: pay in the exact amount + tip (or not) that you want to pay. Don't expect honesty I guess...

You go down a beautiful glass funnel (well that is what is seemed like) to the basement to have a coffee. Good (ie to Australian standards) and excellent patisseries.

Well, let me count the ways... for being a beacon of French style and finesse in a drab and dull Berlin... for being bright and lavish and vivid in a context of austere blahness... for being professional and competent in a city where customer service is an endangered species and for having wonderful, beautiful, lovely things to BUY in a city where that’s a formidable challenge for a world traveler (and, no, I’m not interested in stuff based on old East Berlin traffic icons).

In addition, this retail temple is a gorgeous, easy-to-navigate store with a breathtaking food hall below the ground level and several accommodating restaurants. Try the French wine bar, for starters, staffed by some of the best-looking, most agreeable barmen in the business. I only wish the restaurants stayed open past 8 p.m. when the store closes.

And Galeries Lafayette makes it SO easy to get VAT refunds — in cash. Just head to the first floor tax refund office with your receipts and the cheerful staff will give you your money back. Then stop by the customs office at Berlin Tegel to get your tax form stamped and sent back for credit.

I love this place... and thanks to the fabulous half-German, half-American floor manger (sorry, I’ve forgotten her name) my experience was made even more pleasant.

Retail girls alert! This will be your oasis in Berlin.

While I was paying for not so good looking sushi my girlfriend wAs violently insulted by the burger restaurant for not being in the right lane. Clearly there were no sign and I don't think the tone was appropriated,we left as soon as she mentioned it to me!
Awful place and terrible service!

Whilst in Berlin two weeks ago, I made my way to Galeries Lafayette to see what they had on offer.

As someone who enjoys fine italian sportswear, I was left very disappointed. Their selection was abysmal. 3 jackets and a few grubby polo shirts.

To be fair they had a better selection of the more generic brands, which was to be expected.

If you're a picky dresser, avoid!

What a disappointment, and what a shame for the Lafayette Group. I have been there three times already, and today was the last straw...always a disappointment with incompetent and rude staff. They treat you like in a low-cost supermarket, the staff expresses their complaints openly, or doesn't know how to do certain things (e.g. apply a discount voucher...)...Well I certainly don't want to be in that kind of atmosphere when asked full price. Plus the so-called "gourmet" area has "monoprix" products, which are...well...cheapo supermarket products in France...well, they've certainly matched the service level of a monoprix too. A nice architectural design and a small Eiffel Tower Replica alone don't do the trick, not on me, sorry.

Obviously, it's the same chain as the one in Paris that fits right in among the overpriced stores and restaurants along Friedrichstr. I always stop by the food court where I can find a great selection of cheeses, breads and wine, and scrumptious pastries (true to its French origin).

Unfortunately, the service, especially at the pastry counter is appalling ... to say the least, as the old maidens running the stand haven't quite figured out that selling the pastries to the customers is part of their jobs. They will literally have a line of people waiting while they take their sweet time cleaning and fervently "rearranging" the display case.

Sadly, I endured the abuse just for a bite of the delectable chocolate croissant.
