An audio tour starts at the Lustgarten opposite the Humboldt Forum, which allows you to explore the Nicolai Quarter on your own. All you have to do is download the VoiceMap app. You will be guided by GPS and will learn all sorts of things about the Humboldt Forum, the origins of the city and the Nicolai Quarter. It's definitely worth it!

A medieval style neighborhood in Berlin. It has been rebuilt, it is very picturesque because it is on the River Spree. Lots of restaurants and bars. It is possible to take a boat trip. The Gothic church of St. Nicholas dominates the area and is interesting to visit. Going for a ride in the evening is the best.

The Nikolaiviertel, in German, is an area of Old town Berlin spread around the St. Nicholas church between the Museum island and Alexanderplatz.
It's a core of medieval Berlin, but there's almost nothing left of the original due to WWII consequences. Therefore, Berlin cannot pride itself having a nice Altstadt, but they try hard and do their best.
There are restored cobbled street with many cafes, restaurants and craft shops and particulary nice is the part by the Spree river with nice views.

This is the original core of Berlin!
It is a little village in this big city.
Takes a bit of time to explore all corners and the boundaries but it is worth the hassle.
Take your time, a good guide (book) and/or a tour and discover the Nikolai Quarter.

We will go there again.

Had read before how this area has been recreated in the 1980's however was still expecting to see a little more medieval than saw. Yes theres a church, tourist tatt shops, some cobbled streets and not much else. Very disappoining and certainly not worth going out of your way for.

The Nicholas Quarter or Nikolaiviertel is where Berlin was founded in 1237. Today a lot of effort has been put in to making this quite a touristy part of town. There has been a lot of restoration work to return the area back to its medieval roots. Main landmark is the twin spired St Nicholas church. Entry is €5 and includes an audio tour which gives the history of both the church and the city. As you walk the cobbled streets look for the numbered information panels which highlight points of interest. It is quite a condensed area. There's the rococo Ephraim Palace, the Hemp museum and a host of expensive craft shops. There are a couple of great riverside restaurant's beside a statue of George & the Dragon.

Beyond an impressive church and a statue there was very little to see here. It would not have been recognisable as a medieval quarter without the signposting. Walking along the river nearby was enjoyable but I was glad we only went into the Nicholas Quarter while passing rather than making a special effort.

If you imagine to see a nice little old town - don't go. This is only a few blocks of completely rebuilt houses (bad 80ies Style) and some real old houses in between. Ok, it's interesting to see how it may looked like before (and sad) but you can really save your time and go instead in a real old town in another german city which wasn't completely destroyed by war. If this is your first german-style old town, you may like it. But really there is not much to see.

VERY touristy. This small village like area was destroyed and "reconstructed" and it shows. All restaurants and shops are likewise touristy, s dont bother.
