- AvidTraveler12Winchester, United Kingdom1,831 contributionsA Historic ParkThis is one of the major urban parks in the capitals of the world. It was part of the British sector when Berlin was sectioned off by the allies in WWII. It commences opposite the Brandenburg Gate and is the site of many memorials remembering the dead. It is also very green, beautiful and a gorgeous place to stroll around.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 12 May 2024
- Keiko TTokyo, Japan7 contributionsBerlin’s OasisVisiting Tiergarten was a delightful escape into nature right in the center of Berlin. This sprawling urban park, often referred to as Berlin’s Central Park, offers a refreshing break from the city’s hustle and bustle. As we entered Tiergarten, the contrast with the surrounding urban environment was immediately striking. The park’s expansive greenery, winding pathways, and serene lakes create a peaceful retreat where you can truly unwind. We enjoyed leisurely strolls through the shaded avenues, taking in the natural beauty and the tranquility that seems to pervade the park. One of the highlights of our visit was the Tiergarten’s lake, where we saw locals relaxing by the water and feeding ducks. The park’s many pathways and open spaces are perfect for a casual walk or a picnic. We even came across several charming statues and monuments scattered throughout, each adding a touch of historical and artistic interest to our leisurely exploration. The Victory Column (Siegessäule), located within the park, was another memorable stop. Climbing to the top offered fantastic panoramic views of Berlin. The monument itself is impressive, and the surrounding park provides a lovely backdrop for a photo opportunity. Tiergarten also has several beautifully maintained gardens, including the Rosengarten, which features a stunning array of roses in full bloom. The combination of floral beauty and tranquil surroundings made it a great spot to relax and enjoy the natural scenery. The park’s sheer size means there’s always something new to discover. Whether you’re interested in taking a leisurely walk, having a picnic, or just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, Tiergarten has something to offer. It’s a testament to Berlin’s commitment to preserving green spaces and providing residents and visitors alike with a place to connect with nature. Overall, our visit to Tiergarten was a refreshing and enjoyable experience. It’s a perfect spot to take a break from the city’s busy pace and immerse yourself in a natural setting. If you’re in Berlin, make sure to set aside some time to explore this beautiful park—it’s a wonderful way to experience the city from a different perspective.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024

The towering trees, lush greenery, and tranquil lakes created a serene atmosphere that made it easy to unwind. I spent a good part of the afternoon exploring different parts of the park, from the open meadows to the quiet wooded areas. One of the highlights was stumbling upon the Victory Column (Siegessäule). Climbing to the top rewarded me with panoramic views of the city, which were absolutely worth the effort. The column itself is impressive, and its history added a layer of depth to the visit. The park is so expansive that even though there were plenty of people enjoying the day, it never felt crowded. I found several quiet spots to sit and read, enjoy a snack, or just soak in the natural beauty. Tiergarten’s blend of nature, history, and art made it a perfect place to relax and recharge. I rented some bikes and rode along the river and around the park stopping off at places of interest. Rosengarten is peacefully tranquil. As city parks go, Tiergarten is quite large, green, has much to offer in walking paths, bike lanes, water bodies, sculptures, well maintained greenery. Quite a few places in the park allow for dogs running free, mind the poo. I also spotted a mangy fox. Utilitarian, green and large, that would best describe it.

On our way back to the city centre from Kurfurstendamm, we took our route through these extensive woods. First designed as a hunting ground for the Elector Friedrich III, they were largely destroyed during WW2, but have been very successfully replanted. We spent almost two hours wandering through these pleasant woods and lakes, including having a picnic. Beware the many cyclists who rush through.

A beautiful, leafy urban park in central Berlin. Well worth a visit for a bit of greenery and tranquility. There are multiple paths, lakes, bridges, statues, monuments and sculptures in this woodland park, but beware of the many cyclists who also use it.

It is great to have such a large green space in the city but it needs a lot of housekeeping to clean up the litter. We enjoyed the monuments and did a search for the Reagan memorial. We finally found it as a sidewalk insert. The Soviet victory memorial was so Russian in nature but impressive.

Lots to explore. Many statues and features in the gardens to discover. We went early in the morning on a week day and there were loads of cyclists and walkers heading for work. Notice boards every so often, to help you figure out where you are.

The park is huge, will lots of different areas to explore. There are a couple of bier gartens and a boating lake (you can hire a rowing boat). The only thing that made me not give it 5/5 was the park authorities approach to litter; there is a lot of rubbish and the bins are unsightly skips, mostly overflowing. That's a shame as it detracts from an otherwise lovely experience.

Stunning and very large park that was originally a royal hunting ground. Lots of pathways in all directions and easy (but not unpleasant) to get lost in. Lots of dog walkers, cyclists and joggers making the most of the green open space. Absolutely perfect for an autumn stroll.
The victory column, Bellevue Palace, the Zoo and the brandenburg gate all in or very close to the Tiergarten.

Well this is Berlin's most spectacular feature, as far as I am concerned.
Almost a real forest in the middle of a City. We were so lucky that our Hotel bordered it & could go in almost everyday.
Any town planner would be well advised to visit this place.
One can almost walk around & feel quite alone amongst these huge trees & bubbling brooks.
There are these hidden cafes serving very simple fare at reasonable prices.
One can even cycle around at lesiure & not worry about mad cyclists racing the traffic lights!
Simply wonderful!
We were being followed at one point so be aware.

Can anyone tell me what time the boat hire opens? There doesn’t seem to be an official site or any opening hours for it online I can see. We were hoping to get a boat about half nine (am), but no idea if that would be possible!
Written 30 May 2018
From what we could see the boats start at 10.30 from around the top of Friedrichstrasse

hello, are the kids allowed to play football or go on the grass to play in the park ?

Sure. Tiergarten is like Central Park in New York. A real forest in the middle of the city. And Germany is football world champion. Lol.

I learn from the reviews that there are playgrounds inside the Tiergarten but cannot find any indication on the google map. Would someone be able to advise exactly where the playgrounds are located (maybe where is the nearest gate), and also what kinds of play equipment there? Thanks in advance!
Written 19 July 2017
This park is divided up by 4 roads with the Victory cross taking centre stage, you won't be disappointed there are boards up to tell you where you are and a list of what's in each section , there is even an English garden with a lovely restaurant however I did not recognise any of the flowers and was surprised no roses!, definitely a great free day out exploring
