The first Berlin experience usually takes place in Mitte, where all the stately and artsy stuff is, like Bebelplatz with its Humboldt Library and Book Burning Memorial, Tiergarten, the Reichstag, Brandenburger Tor, Pariser Platz, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz with its architectonically interesting towers, Mall of Berlin on the Leipziger platz and Alexanderplatz with its World Clock. Additionally Mitte is positively stuffed with public art, lots and lots of statues (Germany does love its statues), but also interesting stuff like the new Wilhelm Memorial Church, the funny bronze figurines dotting the Breitscheidplatz around it, Atlas Tower, the Zoo Elephant Gate, and much much more. Great district. Good eating too. Do try Maloa (yummy Poke bowls), Neni (cool) and Spreegold roof terrace.

Where have German efficiency and precision gone? Almost twenty-five years after the reunification of the two Germanys, the city (or at least the historic center) is a construction site: works in front of the Reichstag, Gendarmerie square inaccessible, half of the Berliner dom under restoration... Even the navigator is no longer helpful . We had to stop and ask the distributors for information. Not to mention highways in general. From Berlin to Frankfurt, 500 km of real ordeal with slowdowns every 100 km due to work in progress... without workers at work! Many works have started and very few are progressing. Worse than in Italy in the eighties. It's true that the motorways are free (but for the toilet in the service areas one euro each) but at this point we would have preferred to pay.

The Mitte district has it all: shopping, interesting streets, stunning buildings, the winding River Spree, museums, trendy restaurants, and bars. The most famous sights of Berlin are located here.

The most prominent feature is the 368-meter-high TV tower on Alexanderplatz. The city’s most famous museums can be found next door on Museum Island. The iconic Brandenburg Gate is located at the end of the Unter den Linden Boulevard. The Potsdamer Platz is surrounded by modern architecture.

Berlin neighbourhood is so amazing with all kinds kinds of people. I wandered into Wedding district and saw streets named after other places but I was attracted to a street called Amsterdamer as you can all imagine. As I stralled along this street, I stumbled upon anAfrican place called Jambo Afro shop, as I was standing and gazing, a lady nice looking opened the door with an inviting smile and she asked if I was looking for a massage, as she pointed towards the adjacent door written Afrikanische massage. I told her was just looking around, maybe another time. I continued walking along the street for around 20mins, but there was really nothing interesting, except I couldn't stop thinking about African massage. I turned back and headed straight to the door I was previously shown I was blown away straight, lovely, quiet and inviting place starting from reception area with spa music and fish swimming in two tanks. I had the best massage ever, a real professional massage with a lot of techniques and unforgettable heavenly strokes. Very lovely therapists, Highly recommend.

Our hotel was located a 10-min walk from Mitte along the river, so every morning we would walk our way towards Mitte to have breakfast or simply pass through and head to other attractions.
I found it vibrant and busy, with lots of shopping malls, big brands and an ice ring where kids and adults could ice-skate. In the evening I did not like it overall as sketchy people lurked around, homeless people were passing by or simply sat there,like in the entire Berlin I have to say though.

Mitte is my favorite part of Berlin. Other than obvious things like it being central and near major subway/train stations, I love it for the energy. When the wall came down, many innovative people took over the old, run-down buildings to build one-of-a-kind hotels (Kuenstlerheim Luise, for example), art galleries, and restaurants. It's so interesting and alive there!

Last year, in my first trip to Berlin, I chose the most authentic and historic place to stay in, the East Berlin, and didn’t regret it at all! The entire city breaths History, for the worse and for the better, but in Mitte you feel as if you were still “there”! I mean, Berlin decided to show its own deepest scars in a beautiful and touching way, in all meanings! This is amazing, because the Berliners took the bitterest lemon and was able to make the sweetest and refreshing lemonade! They are not denying the past (anymore), on the contrary, they are preserving and showing it in amazing museums, monuments, memorials, documentation centers, historic sites, as a remission of this specific shady past! So, being in Alexanderplatz, near the odd TV Tower and their surroundings was an unforgettable experience to me! Past, present and future are now mixed in one, which can be seen and felt firstly in the Berliners themselves, secondly in the city’s architecture, landscapes and atmosphere, which are trying to rescue the beauty and the soul of each gloomy corner. So, a ride till the top of the TV Tower is the best way to have a panoramic view of the city from the old and “cold times” and from now. Nearby there’s the vibrant and amusing Hackescher Market, full of restaurants and shops. From Mitte you can reach the main attractions by walking, but if you need, the metro is very good and easy to use, believe me! By walking across the streets of Mitte I could totally understand, for the first time, the deep and important meaning of JFK’s quote, in 1963, the climax of the Cold War: "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words "Ich bin ein Berliner!"

Mitte is the name of the most central district of Berlin. After the administrative reform in 2001, it was the first district and was formed by the merger of the former Mitte district with the districts Tiergarten and Wedding. It is one of the two new districts composed of former West and East Berlin area's, which makes this district unique and quite interesting. It borders Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in the west, Reinickendorf in the north, Pankow in the east, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in the southeast, and Tempelhof-Schöneberg in the southwest.

It contains the historical heart of Berlin and you will find many, many landmarks in Mitte, for example:

- Brandenburger Tor and Pariser Platz,
- Unter den Linden;
- Museum Insel und Berliner Dom;
- Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas;
- Berlin Wall Memorial;
- Reichstag;
- Gendarmenmarkt;
- Hackescher Markt / Hackeschen Höfe;
- Old Jewish Cemetery;
- Neue Synagoge;
- Alexanderplatz;
- Fernsehturm;
- Checkpoint Charlie & Museum;
and many many more.

So if you are visiting Berlin for the first time, make sure that you are staying in Mitte and most of the interesting landmarks are within walking distance, or a short ride with the very good operating S- and U-Bahn lines.
Off course there is so much more to see and to do in Berlin outside Mitte, for example Kreuzberg or Charlottenburg, but Mitte is a good starting point.

If you're looking for an educational break, Mitte is the place for you! Rich in museums, attractions and memorials, Mitte has preserved and highlighted the historical importance of Mitte, rather than pretending the atrocities of history didn't happen, in particular with reference to WWII.
The city is clean, has beautiful buildings and is somewhat empty, with a a population of around 3.4 million living in a city with the capacity for 5.5 million. Transportation is uncomplicated and you can choose from buses, underground trains or the tram. All train ticket machines have numerous language options and accept both cash and card. I don't think I was ever more than 100m away from a station!
There are a plethora of restaurants and cafes in Mitte and most staff are willing to converse in English if your German isn't great; and their English will most likely be very good.
I stayed in the city for 4 days and was able to visit around two thirds of the major attractions. Most museums are free, or relatively cheap and with tourism being the main industry of the city, there is an abundance of companies offering tours of the city.
I would definitely recommend Mitte to anyone wanting to learn about the history of Berlin and wanting to stay in a central location!
