The Gemaldegalerie is a museum near potsdamer platz in Berlin. It has various of Italian Renaissance paintings, and of Dutch painters. This collection is large with nice paintings, and it reminded me a lot of the uffizi gallery in Florence Italy. For classical paintings this is the best museum in Berlin.

We enjoy going to museums and appreciate seeing great art. We have been to the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and this museum is right up there in terms of old master paintings. Berlin has several world class museums and this is one of them.

Took me 6 hours to get through the whole gallery with a FREE English audio guide. Tiring but worth the effort. They don't have galleries like this in Canada.

As many people have stated, this gallery has an important collection of paintings. Unfortunately the ambience is not a great one in which to enjoy them. The building is in the Kulturforum, a rather dull complex (with a few exceptions, like the Berliner Philharmonie). In the gallery the paintings themselves are not very well supplied with information and the lighting... More

This has the most comprehensive collection of Old Masters I've seen: you name an artist and there are probably a few exampes of their work here, and there is still room for some quirky surprises too! Not as crowded as it really deserves to be (probably because it's strangely tricky to get to, and not well advertised) but that's a... More

Germany was one of the great early industrial economies in the late 1800's resulting in great new personal wealth and amazing state and personal art and antiquity collections, which have often ended up in these galleries and museums Berlin. On par with anything in London, NY or Paris.

The Gemaldegallerie has a superb collection of old masters to rival the National Gallery in London or the Louvre or Uffizi-but the great advantage is that it is nowhere near as well known and busy. You can stand in front of a Vermeer and be pretty much the only person in the room (instead of 10 deep elsewhere). One of... More

This large and impressive collection of 12th to 18th c european art is a must see for visitors to Berlin. Pre-Renaissance religious art generally creeps me out, so I was a bit put off as I walked through the first few rooms. But by the time you get to the 5th or 6th room, you realize you are in a... If you like art, you will most definitely like this museum. They have mainly German/Dutch and Italian paintings but I can only say it is an exquisite collection. And take good shoes, it is a big place and will take you hours. A definite muse-see!

Staying in Charlottenburg

Neighbourhood Profile
Breathe in Berlin’s royal past while walking through the gardens of beautiful Charlottenburg Palace, which lends its name to this well-heeled neighbourhood. Here you'll find some of the oldest homes in the city: upper-class apartment buildings with ornate facades and marble-floored foyers line the cobblestone streets. Stroll by sophisticated restaurants, through little parks, or around Lake Lietzensee. Window shop down Kurfürstendamm, the most renowned high-end shopping street in Berlin, where you can find all the big designer names. In the evening, visit one of the old theatres close by Zoo Station which were nightlife hot spots in the 1920s, or dine in one of the many international restaurants around Savignyplatz before heading to other parts of town for a night out.
