Lots to see and do in a historic area

Shops, restaurants, checkpoint Charlie museum and old buildings mixed with new. From upscale to tourist shops, from full service to take away, plenty to see and do here.

This avenue is where the east-west passage known as Checkpoint Charlie stood. The original place has no real interesting remains but posters had been set to recount the history of the wall inside the cold war and are very interesting (stunning photos)

Restaurants and stores....things to get you busy in the middle of it all. If you prefer "quiet" you'd best go to Tiergarten

We really liked that this street is full of shops and you can even find luxury stores in the Lafayette Galleries which are located right next to the Friedrichstrasse underground station.

It is a lovely street with mild traffic and full of shopping opportunities. One blood vessel of the city, with a nice opportunity to walk through

Shoppers spending time around Friedrichstrasse may want to visit Quartier 206. Located next to Galeries Lafayette, this is an art and fashion themed department store with three floors of high end and luxury brand name retail shopping along with a nice ground floor cafe and modern coffee shops. We visited during December and found Quartier 206 to be well decorated... More

Staying in Kreuzberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Kreuzberg
Berlin's revolutionary heart and immigrant roots can both be found in Kreuzberg, but this central neighbourhood is beginning a new chapter. In the 1950s and '60s, Turkish guest workers settled around Kottbusser Tor, while in the 1980s and '90s, rambunctious squatters and artists gathered to live a carefree life here. An old hospital even became a hotspot of riots between squatters and police. Today you can still find the best kebabs in town and many underground clubs, but a lot has changed as well. The hospital has been transformed into an art center, and increasingly you will find new urban cafés, restaurants and designer shops. Rising housing prices and gentrification threaten the spirit of this area along the Spree River, but the neighbourhood’s legacy is upheld by a very engaged community fighting to preserve its rebellious identity.
