Unter den Linden probably is the most famous avenue in Berlin.
This avenue was the pageant of Prussian kings and German emperors and the promenade of the bourgeoisie. Later it became the avenue of the commercial industrial revolution and also the avenue of the triumphant socialism of the then GDR. Walking along this avenue from the Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz over the Schloßbrücke from which it is called Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, one can see many of Berlin's major sights within a distance of 2 kilometres.

This 2k street runs from Brandenburg Gate to Alexanderplatz. Along the way you can see such sights as Berliner Dom, Humbolt University and the TV tower near Alexanderplatz. A short diversion off this street brings you to such beautiful squares like Gendarmenmarkt and Bebelplatz. Plenty of places to stop for something to eat and drink and enjoy people watching. There is a lot of construction work going on, at the moment, so that does spoil some sections but still, it is a great place to walk.

One of Berlin's main boulevards literally means "under falsehoods." The length of the street is 1390 meters and the width reaches 60 meters. Frederick the Great truly holds sway over the eastern end of Unter den Linden. His equestrian statue (by Daniel Christian Rauch) will stand next to the flat of Bebelplatz, formerly called Forum Fridericianum, which was supposed to evoke in the imagination the splendour of Imperial Rome. The square is dominated by the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, designed by Georg von Knobelsdorf. The Old Royal Library, completed in 1780, faces its facade. Here in 1933, on instructions from the Nazi propaganda director Joseph Goebbels, books by ideological opponents of the regime were burned at the stake. To the south of the Bebelplatz is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Hedwigskirche, whose classical features resemble the Pantheon in Rome. Friedrich's civic project was never completed, but the buildings on the opposite side of Unter den Linden still hold the imperial spirit. Humboldt University - originally the palace of Frederick the Great's brother - was built in 1748 by Johann Bowmann. It is followed by the Neue-Wache Memorial (Hauptwacht), created by Schinkel in 1818 to complement Johann Nehring's Baroque palace (1695), the Zeichhaus (Arsenal). The Zeichhaus now houses the Deutsche Historisches Museum.

The main avenue of Berlin, straight from the Brandenburg Gate. It was the scene of the famous line of cars trying to get through the door in 1989 the day after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Currently full of shops and hotels, I thought it would be nicer.

On this occasion we made the tour of the Unter del Linden, starting from the end that is close to Alexander Platz and until about halfway, about 700 meters, the previous time we had made the tour leaving from the Brandenburg gate. Most of all it is a walk along which for me is the main artery of Berlin, wide, relatively quiet, with greenery and important buildings through it, such as Humboltd University, the building of the old Arsenal and the Schlossbrucke Bridge. Simply to enjoy Berlin, quietly and on a nice June day.

Apparently, the traditional street "Unter den Linden" is one of Berlin's grand boulevards.
Unfortunately, many of the beautiful trees fell victim to the construction of the U5 subway. Nevertheless, it is still worth taking a stroll here, if only because of the prominent sights along this famous street, e.g. the Brandenburg Gate, the Adlon, the State Opera, the Neue Wache and much more.

If you are visiting Berlin, Unter den Linden is a must see. It's filled with history and though it might not be as well-known as Champs Elysees, it's certainly as beautiful. The boulevard in itself has something special and it offers several sights alonside: connecting the Brandenburg Gate to Alexander Platz, it lures you to Madamd Toussaud's Wax Figure Museuum, the Berlin Dome, the State Opera, the statue of King Frederick II of Prussia, Bebelplatz, Humboldt University, House I of the Berlin State Library and many others. It really is something you have to see!

If you only have a few hours and want to say you have seen Berlin, go to Alexanderplatz and walk along Unter den Linden towards the Gate. The street is scattered with both historical and modern sites on both sides. You will see the Berliner Dome, the Museum Island, the Opera House, Humboldt University, Babelplatz, the statues of Marx and Hegel, and many other famous sites.
The street leads to Brandenburger Tor from where you can go to see the Jewish memorial or the Reichstag.

We have been to all the "famous" boulevards- Champs Elysee, Andrassi Ut, Las Ramblas- and we loved Unter den Linden just as much! Walking along this wide tree-lined boulevard filled with so much history, beautiful buildings (a few construction projects) and the Brandenburg Gate at the end is wonderful. Walking the opposite direction you see the Berliner Dom, TV tower and beautiful bridges. The street is lined with cafes that are perfect for people watching and having a snack/beer. Now, I must say we had perfect weather (80 degrees and sunny) both days, so it was perfect for strolling. I probably would not be quite so enthusiastic if it was cold or rainy:-) Definitely a must see in Berlin.
