Character and shopping

Great for small shops that have Christmas decorations, clocks, German related products, and some cafes. Heart of the City that survived WWII bombing.

This is the street where all the craftmen on the town use to have shops thus the name Schmied (technically refers to a blacksmith). It is lines with lovely little houses painted in different pastel colors and most are still shops of some sort. Lots of bakeries and souvenir places. It is the path from the main market square to... Its a great street full of little shops in a beautifully well preserved small town. Be glad that mot of the allied bombs missed in the war and this city was left standing for our enjoyment today. I was on a tour and wish I had more time.

Located right by the town hall is this street that will delight anyone with rows of shops, bakeries, and typical row homes in different colors. Best of all was the snowball we purchased that is pieces of dough that is shaped into a ball and deep fried and then you put white powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar or chocolate covered. It's... More

Schmiedgasse is one of the longest streets in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and its famous for its many shops and restaurants. No way would anyone die of hunger here! As we ventured on these streets we were fascinated by its many different shops. There was one store that displayed numerous Christmas decorations, right in the middle of July! Wow! However,... More

Right across the Town Hall is Schmiedgasse, sort of the main street of Rothenburg lined with petit shops, bakeries and cafes all housed in a row of colourful townhouses. The street eventually brings you to the ever famous Plonlein which is the most picture perfect triangular intersection in Rothenberg that you have seen in posters, calendars and tourism magazines. Remember... More

We first visited Rothenburg in the fall of 1984 and it was magical. This visit in Dec 2015 was not. The crowds over-ran the town. Huge lines, massive crowds mixed with personal cars and commercial trucks.
