We were exploring Regensburg and noticed a car decorated with flowers, obviously for a wedding, outside a rather nondescript church. We went inside and were amazed at the elaborate gold and white rococo style of this church, the Alte Kapelle or Old Chapel in German. It was such a contrast to the Gothic style of the Dom St Peter. The main part of the church was not open because of the wedding inside, but we could admire it through the wrought-iron grill.
The structure was erected in the 9th century. In the 18th century the Romanesque basilica was rebuilt in the Bavarian rococo style. Of special interest is the new organ which was dedicated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 during his visit to Regensburg. Here's how one guidebook describes the interior. "Its dowdy exterior gives little hint of the joyous rococo treasures within—extravagant concoctions of sinuous gilt stucco, rich marble, and giddy frescoes, the whole illuminated by light pouring in from the upper windows."

Amazing small basilica, wish I had the chance of seeing this one closer but the center of it was closed. Loved how bright the colors were towards the ceiling

Would have missed this beautiful sanctuary if I had not seen an article about it. It was not on our official "tour" with Viking, but we had plenty of leisure time to explore on our own. The day was gorgeous and the inside stunning. It is a short walk from the more famous St. Peter's but after travelling through several cities; it was the one I remembered most and after posting pictures of the beautiful inside - got many comments.

A beautiful, light, airy church. It is so heavenly welcoming, especially if you go there right after you visited the cold and dark Dom.

We saw a thumbnail image of the Old Chapel on a tourist brochure and thought it looked interesting. It was a bit tricky to find and when we did we thought it might be closed (a lot of other stuff we tried to visit in the town was closed on Monday), but just as we were about to turn away a local woman just pushed the door hard & walked inside - so we followed.
The persistence paid off - it was one of the most interesting places we visited in Regensburg (a town which has a lot of interesting places to visit!)
The chapel is all in white and gold rococo style - absolutely stunning! We couldn't get into the main part of the church (a metal gate) but there were no worshippers (unlike the Cathedral) and it was quite light inside so I felt uninhibited taking my time getting some nice photos.

After Wies church the Old Chapel in Regensburg has the most beautiful Bavarian Rococo decoration and is the oldest church in Bavaria. King Louis the German consecrated the Palace Chapel to the Mother of God. After his death the church fell in despair until Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor, decided to restore it. Designed by the court sculptor Simon Sorg, it depicts scenes from the life of Henryy II and his wife Gwendolyn. In 1747 the Romanesque Basilica and the Gothic choir were turned into Bavarian rococo style. The organ built in 1791 by Nabburger Andrew White is the only organ in the world blessed by a Pope! During his visit in Regensburg in 2006, Pope Benedict XVI was impressed by this organ and blessed it. Now it bears his name and serves the liturgy as well as concerts given in the chapel, too. Grace Chapel is a small quiet room before the main chapel. But it has the Miraculous Image that makes it so special and famous. It's a byzantine icon of Virgin Mary with Jesus that according to the legend, was painted by St.Luke the Evangelist himself. A gift given by Pope Benedict VIII to Henry II in 1014, for his coronation. After many transfers to museums, churches etc. it has been returned to its original place to give some hope to desperate people.Alte Kapelle is minutes away from the Cathedral and the streets and lanes around it are full of significant old buildings.

This is a great architectural contrast to St. Peter's, and close enough that it feels almost like a side-by-side comparison if you come here right after. Unlike St. Peter's, this church allows photos as long as there is no service going on. If you have time, check out the church on the Thurn&Taxis grounds for a larger rendition of this style.

We thought this church was magnificent inside, and more beautiful than St. Peter's Cathedral. Usually if you see one church, you've seen them all. Not the case with Alte Kapelle. From the outside it looks quite plain, but once inside you have a wonderful baroque interior.

The gilt and glow to this chapel is stunning, ultra-theatrical as roccoco should be, but yet discernible patterns and motifs make for a visual treat. I was fortunate to attend during a service on a weekday, but was surprised that the chapel was closed to the public shortly after. Best to check opening hours during winter. But definitely a must-see for art history and architecture buffs--but also for the high wire acts of saints and cherubim.

Light, bright gilded rococco interior. Spectacular, especially after seeing the immense and mostly gray interior of the nearby cathedral.

It's open all day (7-7). You can't tour when Mass is happening. At lunch you can enter the chapel but you can't walk through it but you can take pictures through an iron gate.

Is this church in the heart of Regensburg and can it be reached by walking from the cruise port? Are tours offered and if so are they available in English and what is the cost? What are the hours? Thank you.

Outside of service times, the church is only visible from behind a locked iron grille at the rear. It's still a splendid view, but only in one direction.
