Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very nice palace of the bishop. Great to see its ornamentation and sculptured subjects. The outside courtyard is clean and welcoming.

I love that the "new" residence is from the 1700's. Tremendous Residence. Impressive from the outside, it fills the square.

Passau was a stop on our cruise down the Danube. This palace is a must visit. it is across the Danube from Passau, high above the city. There is a decent museum and places to look over Passau. A shuttle will take one up and back for a low cost, and there is a set of steps of the side of the height for avid walkers. There is also a restaurant located at the palace.

Unfortunately I didn't get up close to see this place , but from where we stood, the view up to this place was gorgeous . Another well maintained building. Funny little painted in lower Windows.

We learned that the "Old" Residence (Alte Bischofliche Residenz) sits high atop the hill with the Vista Oberhaus Fortress. It is, indeed, very old. However, it is the "New" Residence (circa early 1700's) that is located in the town near the Cathedral. Note also that the "New" Residence is in close proximity to the Cathedral.

The library is upstairs, there is no charge to go in. This is where some of the 17th century church treasures are on display. The wooden figures date to the 16th century. Many tours don’t take the visitors up here but it is so worth a visit on one’s own.

The museum is located on the top floor in the New Bishop's Residence, a palace built in the early 18th century. It houses the treasures of Passau's religious past, when it was the capital of the largest diocese of the Holy Roman Empire. Ancient books are on display inside secure glass and wood cabinetry.

Our guided tour group stopped with a tour of the first floor, in particular, its rococo stairways and the fresco of the Gods of Olympia worshipping the eternal town of Passau. If anyone has time, they should go up the two floors, poke their noses into some of the open rooms, and, by all means, go into that historic library.

The building exterior is no less grand. The bright white Wittlesbach statue fountain out front, the highly ornamented balconies, and the architectural details (rococo) do soften what would otherwise be a geometrically boring building.

Inside, the shaft-styled staircase (from the bottom, you can see straight up to the top floor ceiling) shows off excessive amounts of imaginative stucco work reminiscent of peaked stiff egg-whites gone wild or frosting on the most elaborate wedding cake. It crawls up the staircase, around door frames, and up to the ceiling.

The 3rd floor ceiling is where the beautiful and exceptional ceiling mural can be seen. The first floor is not a bad vantage point as viewing from here allows one to see just about all of it at one time. A closer look at the figures is best from the top floor.

Napoleon stayed here in 1809 (but probably not as a welcomed guest).

The Library on second floor has some great art, definitely should be on your walking tour of Passau. The square is also nice and gives you a nice view of the rear of St Stephan's.

This pastel colored plaster building has lots of ornate plaster work, as well as statues lining the roof line. Called the new bishops house even though it was built in the 1700s because it replaced the old bishops house. Did not go in as the day we were there was Easter Monday, a holiday. In front is a fountain with 3 angel figures, each one depicts one of the three rivers. Passau is a cute town with narrow cobblestone streets, loved this place!
