Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Passau is a delightful city on the Danube. We went there to begin a river cruise, but wandered around the town stopping in churches and walking through parks and along the River. (We recommend walking along the Inn River, which is on the other side of town from the Danube where all the cruise ships dock.) Most shops were closed because we were there on Sunday, but the town is beautiful!

Beautiful discovery, city to do on foot. Walks on each side of the banks, from the castle towards the Danube (city) then go up to the hermitage on foot via the steps. With impressive view of the famous difficult mixing of waters.

We visited Passau during a river cruise stop at this location.
The old town also known as the Altstadtand has a distinct Baroque flavour.
There was a devastating fire in 1662.
From 1892 until 1894, Adolf Hitler and his family lived in Passau.
Its known as the "City of Three Rivers" as the river Danube is joined by the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north. As a result flooding is a common issue here.
The city is dotted with churches which are worth seeing.
The heart of the old town is the Residenzplatz (or Residence Square). Here you can see the Cathedral, Residence Building, cafes, shops, and a central fountain known as Wittelsbacherbrunnen.
As with all the other German cities we visited during our river cruise they are all historical and well preserved.
Another lovely old town.

The narrow peninsula at the confluence of the three rivers looks like the bow of a majestic ship.
It owes its Baroque appearance to the Italian architects who modelled it on the ruins of the devastating fires of the 18th century.
Large squares, staircases, winding streets, an episcopal residence and those of the canons, numerous churches and bourgeois houses, the majestic St. Stephen's Cathedral, which houses the largest church organ in the world.
On the left bank of the Danube the Veste Oberhaus military fortress dominates the city from the hill; on the right bank stands the 14th-century town hall, later decorated by Bavarian and Austrian artists, with its 38-meter high tower.
Along the idyllic walk on the bank of the Inn, towards the tip of the peninsula, you can admire the remarkable Schaibling Tower, a medieval military building.

The Altes Rathaus is worth the time and effort for a visit. Several of the public chambers are open to the public; rest rooms are free; and a small exhibit area is interesting. The largest of the chambers has lofty ceilings and stained glass windows and appears to be in use by the city. Seating and sound system is in place suggesting large gatherings.
Another smaller room appears to be a council chamber with a magnificent baroque ceiling fresco of the Danube, depicted by a Reubenesque nude figure attended by water nymphs. See it if you can.
Enjoy.

Passau is a beautiful city to visit and great for walking tours. Walk up to the castle overlooking Passau across the Danube (30 mins) for an exceptional view of the Old Town and surrounding region. Next, walk around the Old Town, exploring all the churches and tight lovely streets. Finally, cross the River Inn and visit the Roman Museum for a great explanation of why Passau was so important to the Roman Empire. There are lots of good gasthofs with riverview for lunch or dinner.

I live within the oldtown and can honestly say I have new experiences everytime I stroll around. This part of Passau has a lot to offer, nice small boutiques, coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants, the cathedral, lots of alleys with hidden treasures. Be aware streets are mainly made of cobble stones so good shoes are recommended and for wheel chairs its not the optimal surrounding.
