Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A fantastic building and a must see. When we visited there was some building works in progress (updating of electrics) however, it didn’t destruct from the beautiful interior.
I am sure there’s lots of history to this cathedral and, if you are able to secure a tour, do so.
It holds the largest organ (made up of 5 different organs) in Europe. It’s a shame we couldn’t hear it on the day.

This beautiful cathedral was built in 1600's, after original cathedral was destroyed in a fire. The clock tower with its green dome is striking. We were not able to go inside because they were preparing for the organ concert, held most days at noon. It has the largest organ in the world, outside of the US.

Dom St. Stephan is a beautiful cathedral and a must-see while in Passau. When we visited in May 2023 it was undergoing construction but that did not subtract from it's beauty. We also made a point of attending the organ concert, which I actually would not really recommend. Because of the construction, the organ being played was not nearby but rather in a different building. The pews were uncomfortable and the cathedral very cold. I love music but the three of us left the concert somewhat underwhelmed.

Our guide told us that this Cathedral held the largest organ in the world. While we were there we could hear the choir singing during Mass. It was beautiful and we wanted to stay for more but had to leave since the Mass was in progress and our tour was continuing on. We did go back to look inside after the tour and another Mass was starting soon so we stayed. The inside of the Cathedral was being renovated in places.

On the second attempt we finally managed to get into the cathedral. On a weekday when there were a lot of tourists in town (at least 4 cruise ships), the cathedral was closed to visitors at 11:15 a.m. because of an organ concert at 12 noon. It was not even possible to enter the cathedral to pray. According to the official poster, entry is prohibited from 10:45 a.m. That is a real shame. The cathedral itself is very worth seeing with its embroidery and paintings. Unfortunately, the entire city seems overwhelmed by the rush of visitors. Advertising via tourism fairs or newspaper supplements should be stopped.

Absolutely stunning interior of this cathedral. Our guide told us when it was re-built after a fire, it was decided to make the interior light and airy as the people were coming out of a dark period in their history. They accomplished an incredible feat as the frescos and windows make it a wonderful place to look at. The famous organ that is the largest cathedral organ in the world was fantastic to hear when mass was finishing up. A stop to make in Passau for sure.

Beautiful Cathedral but 12 noon Organ Concert underwhelming. I never thought I’d ever make such a remark! The introduction was garbled as the microphone sound system used was distorted and couldn’t be understood. First of all no idea where organist was, no mirror to see him/her. The organ sounded muffled and musical programme was very niche. The audience for the 12 noon €5 ticket were clearly 99% tourists, many from USA, Canada, UK etc and some thought could have been given to some more well known and popular pieces. There was no sheet telling us of the pieces performed or who was performing them. I was hoping for something by Bach such as the Toccata in D Minor for example or Mendelssohn’s Wedding March. In my opinion a wasted opportunity. My friends all agreed.

Gorgeous church with an impressive organ; hopefully the experience-limiting indoor construction will finish soon. Passau is a beautiful, hilly city on the conversion of three rivers with lovely architecture, winding cobblestone streets, pedestrian mall with plenty of retail & eateries. Very nice/helpful people, most speak at least a little English.

This magnificent Cathedrals has white towers and blue-green domes and is a baroque styled church.
Located at the highest point in Passaus old town (Alstadt) it can be seen in the distance.
After a fire in 1662 the church was given its unique Italian character.
They also hold the biggest cathedral organ in the world with 17,974 pipes and 233 registers. We were lucky on the day we visited to actually hear this organ playing. It had a beautiful and unique sound.
This is a must visit in Passau.

The beautiful St. Stephen's Cathedral has the largest cathedral organ in the world (with 17,974 pipes) and the largest organ in Europe. The largest organ in the world is in Atlantic City (with 33,113 pipes). The current cathedral was built between 1668 and 1693 after a fire consumed an earlier church on the same site.
The Christmas Market was held in front of the cathedral.

How do you buy tickets ?
Thanks Dick

I'd also recommend lining up as early as possible if you want a good seat. The best seats are in the middle of the cathedral close to the center aisle.

I will be in Passau in a couple of weks. How does one buy tickets to the organ recital?

Written 9 March 2019
Apologies, please disregard my previous response just now - I was thinking of another St. Stephens, not the one in Passau. It is best to just purchase your tickets at the venue. There is no reserved seating and they open the Cathedral about one hour before start of the Concert so I suggest, get there early, buy your ticket then have a wander around this lovely town and be back one hour before starting time and get a good seat. The organ is on the right hand side of the Cathedral facing the front so best seating is in the middle to get most out of the wonderful acoustics.

There is a concert every day but Sunday. On Sunday, you would need to go to a church service.

De dom wordt momenteel gerestaureerd. Staat het plafond in de steigers ? Of zijn het de muren ?
Renovatie binnen of buiten.
Wij willen graag morgen gaan

Is this within walking distance of where the Amadeus River Cruise docks?
Written 20 February 2018
I would think that it would be as we were moored at the furthest end of the bank and it only took us 20 minutes to walk back.

How do you get tickets for the noon concert?
Written 4 February 2018
The booth opens at 10 am at the side entrance courtyard on the day of the performance, Saturday at noon. The concert lasts a half hour and it usually sells to capacity. Doors open around 11:20 with no reserved seating. I saw it today and I give it 5 stars

On what days / times of day can the organ be heard in August / September / October ? We will be on a cruise with not much flexibility in timing.
Written 27 January 2018
We were told that there is almost daily organ recitals in the church at twelve noon. There is a Tourist Information Center close by in the city center. I was on a walking tour off as Viking Cruise and the concert was covered. Check on the church website.
