- barry jLos Angeles, California2 contributionsMunich is Worth the TimeMunich is a lovely city. If you stay in the old city section, as I did, you are both surrounded by history (and wonderful architecture) and in the heart of a thriving, vibrant city. The Residence, former palace of the kings of Bavaria and the largest royal palace within a city in Europe, is an impressive museum of 18th and 19th century opulence. If you like such shows as "Empress", you definitely will enjoy seeing how real monarchs lived. Beside the palace is the old Opera House, another great architectural marvel. The Marienplatz is at the heart of the old city. Definitely a must see. But beware: all the restaurants and shops are VERY touristy. Waiters are surly and service overall is lacking. I really enjoyed the English Garden, the city's central park. Larger than NYC's version, it is a pastoral retreat where you can escape the city and feel like you are walking in the country. While not as grand as Vienna or as intimately charming as Prague, Munich is worth the time.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- JonnyjubbRayleigh, United Kingdom241 contributionsInteresting and Informative.Very informative museum on the history of 20th century Munich and the rise of National Socialism. It’s laid out chronologically, so start on the top floor and work your way down. Toilets and lockers in the basement and entrance is free. Would recommend you allow a couple of hours.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- richardSao Paulo, SP35 contributionsChilling yet informative Museum.Excellent informative Museum that tells the story of Munich from 1918 to 1945+ I never realised how Munich was a counter-revolutionary and conservative city that contrasted with Berlin in the 1920s. National Socialism (Nazism) was born in Munich and this is the chilling story of that birth and subsequent years. Definitely worth a visit.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 April 2024
- CJTravelerTexasTexas9,286 contributionsGood Return VisitI visited the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism (NS-Dokumentationszentrum). This museum conveys the history of National Socialism and its many evils. While I had been in this museum with a Canadian scholar five years ago, I wanted to visit it again to see if there were any changes to the exhibits. If there were significant changes, I didn’t notice any. Persons interested in German history and the Nazi movement would find this museum enlightening.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 April 2024
- WeMagellanBoston, Massachusetts26 contributionsExcellent MuseumExcellent museum about the rise of the Nazis. The captions were in English and German. The end of the exhibit has information about modern ongoing extremist threats, but 3/4 floors are about the rise of the Nazis and a bit about post war. The museum is free and well presented. They also have historical video footage throughout that was very interesting. Outside of the museum there are some benches and a little stand selling coffee.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 June 2024
- Sonya GBanner Elk, North Carolina53 contributionsVery informative! My 29 year old son and I found the museum to be very informative and laid out the facts in an easy to understand, chronological order. We stayed 3 hours and could have stayed longer! I highly recommend the museum if you want to understand the role Munich played in WWII.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 August 2024
- MissMelbourneMelbourne, Australia50 contributionsDo not miss thisAfter spending several days in Munich with no visible reference to the atrocities of the Nazi era it was time to pay respect to those whose stories must be heard. In a very non-descriptive building you will find an excellent display of historical pictures both still and moving as well as numerous stories of courage. There is no entry fee. Spread over 4 levels it well worth a visit.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 September 2024

I spent about 3 hours at this museum and it answered many questions that I had about this era in history. I wasn't able to see everything, so I also bought the book to bring home to read about modern anti-Semitism in Munich. The museum was open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and, apparently, is free until April 2020 (I believe).

Very informative and well organized. There was a continuous flow pattern for which to follow while reading the material and watching the videos. Audio guides give good narration throughout the exhibits.
There is a lot of reading, so younger, less attentive children may not appreciate this museum.
Multiple levels with elevators.
Each level has portable stools which were appreciated after a few hours on our feet.

The museum is free to get into to and it is definitely informative, well thought out and structured but it's mostly text and pictures rather than actual historical artefacts on display, so the reality is that this could be done as a web site.
The exception to this was a temporary display of artefacts from the Warsaw ghetto. This display was small but very moving.
Don't get me wrong, it is worth a visit and I'd recommend it, but some more actual artefacts would have been welcome.

A history of the NSDAP in Bavaria from the ashes of the Great War to the post WW2 period. Alll the displays are in both English and German. Loads of photos, mini-biographies, maps, facsimiles of contemporary documents, arranged over four floors, starting at the top of the building and working down. The museum is built in the site of the Brown House - he original HQ of the NSDAP. As well as the permanent exhibition, there are changing art exhibition. An excellent way to spend an afternoon.

Spent a few hours in this museum. It's very easy to find and is also free entry until April 2020. There is loads of very interesting information, and is a good mix of text and pictures. The museum is split into 4 floors - the top 3 are different periods of Nazi history then the lower one is an art exhibition.
There is quite a lot to look at, so definitely take one of their chairs to take around and sit on! While we were there, there were two school groups which were a little intrusive, as they sat in the centre of each section and blocked it, but we moved around them, and you can hardly complain about school children learning about history in a museum you don't even pay for, so it was fine.
Overall, very interesting museum to visit if you have an hour or two free!

A beautiful journey that recounts the rise of Nazism and its historical phases with a focus also on the city of Munich. The itinerary begins from the fourth to the first floor and consists of the reading of panels illustrating documents, photographs and posters in two languages (German and English). On the -1 floor there is a bibliographic collection, with a reading room and workstations where it is possible to access a very interesting documentary archive. The visit is free but at the end it is possible to purchase a museum guide to keep track of what you have learned. The staff was very kind in guiding me, both at reception and in the room to help me orient myself with the interactive panels. I was lucky enough to witness guides explaining the panels to school children. Even though I didn't understand German, their passion and desire to make those kids understand reached me too. Well done.

Built on the site of Munich's Nazi Party Hq's ("the Brownhouse"), this is a multi-level chronological exhibition of the National Socialist State - how it came in to being, what it was and did, and its effect on the world from the 1920's through the modern era. Comparable to Nuremberg's Documentation Center, which it may in fact surpass in terms of its breadth and depth, this is a must see. The bookstore has an extensive collection of unique works, primarily in German of course, and the entire exhibition is honest, accurate, and utilizes modern technology to help in understanding the Nazi period. English headsets available. A must see.

I’m interested in history, I admit that I like seeing a good museum on a city break and I did study fascism pre University. This is a very good museum that makes a thorough and objective assessment of Nazism. It doesn’t ‘pull any punches’ - if it thinks citizens ignored warnings then it states that clearly. The detail included in this museum may be too much for the casual tourist - there’s a lot to read. But it has been brilliantly put together and it’s important that it exists - and on the site of the former Nazi HQ too.

Free entry and a booklet to explain everything. The first few floors are great, lots of interesting information. Loads to read, some people brought chairs. Everything in German and English. The last few floors were more art focused which we weren't interested in personally so can't comment on them.
Definitely worth a visit if you're interested if history.

Such a vital museum which documents the rise of the nazi party and how Munich was its ground zero. Really scary stuff too since the parallels to current populist regimes and the extreme right wing in the US point to how easily history can repeat itself.
While the content in the museum is a 10/10, the format could really use updating since it’s all static posters and pictures which would lose the younger generation. In the meantime, make sure to pick up the free audio guide at reception because it makes the museum much more immersive.

is the documentation centre open on August 15th?
Written 15 August 2018
Yes, the Documentation Center in Munich is open on Aug. 15th.
Written 15 August 2018
How does this Centre differ from the Documentation Centre in Nurnburg ?
Written 26 June 2018
The have slightly different focuses. The one in Munich does focus more on Munich and Nuremberg focuses more on occurances in Nuremberg.
Personally I prefer the Nuremberg doku centre. But if you’re very interested in this part of history, both are worth a look.
