Very beautiful church, a neo-romanesque city landmark, located in the Ludwigstraße, near to the Ludwig-Maximilian University, about 1,36 km north from the city centre.

Don't let its white front miss lead you. This the most colorful church from its roof tiles to its ceiling paintings and not to mention the single largest church fresco behind the alter. In addition, I read somewhere that this was the first Neo-Romanesque structure and thus the blueprint for many civic buildings in Europe and the US in the late 19th Century. However, it is the artwork and the color that will impress you. Also make sure you get far enough away to see the roof tiles as that only adds to the church.
It is a shame that more people miss this church as it is away from the town center. However, two u-bahn stops from the Marienplatz will take you to this hidden Gem. When we visited we had the entire church to ourselves which is a rare treat in Munich.

Ludwigskirche, the Catholic Parish and University Church St. Louis, is a monumental church in neo-romanesque style with the second-largest altar fresco of the world created by Peter von Cornelius of the Last Judgment. This is a beautiful painting that was well worth the visit! Time for visit - 30 minutes

The church is situated in the middle of the Ludwigstrasse just opposite to the LMU University building. To get there, you can alight at Universität U-Bahn station which is too close.
Make sure to check the paintings, sculptures and the magnificent altar.
After your visit, and depending on the weather, you can get a picnic in the English Garden or a coffee in the nearby student cafés.

A very impressive church built in neo-roman architectural style stands dominant above all the surrounding buildings. Very beautiful and impressive sight.

The Catholic Parish and University Church St. Louis also referred to as Ludwigskirche is located along Ludwigstrasse in Munich. This is a a large Neo-Romanesque style church built by German architect Friedrich von Gärtner between 1829-44.
The church features an attractive facade with two towers and a nice portico with ceiling frescos. The interior features a deep barrel vault nave and impressive frescos. The nave is nicely lined with modestly decorated columns. The two side aisles are nice to see as well.
The most memorable part of our visit was the very large Peter von Cornelius 'Last Judgment' fresco behind the altar. This is a huge and attractive artwork, one that really sticks out from a visit to Ludwigskirche. In fact, viewing the Cornelius fresco alone is worth the quick visit to the church.
In the end, we liked our visit to Ludwigkirche, it is worth a 15-20 minute visit and can be conveniently included in your sightseeing plans if you plan to visit the Odenplatz, Museum District or western side of the English Gardens during your time in Munich.

The great Ludwigkirche is incredibly beautiful and full of good vibrations. A house of God that actually makes you happy.
One reason is the amazing ceilings. I wish I could bring them home - and that I had a bigger house.
But the main reason is the view on Jesus. He is not the suffering man we are used to meet. As a baby he is a little powerful fellow - Jesus Christ Superstar - and hanging on the cross he is in peace with himself and offers peace to his followers.
A visit in Ludwigkirche is highly recommended. It might save your day.

The double towers can be seen from afar. Approaching it on Ludwigstrasse the full beauty of the façade comes into view.
Inside are some marvellous frescoes, with the one over the main altar being one of the greatest in the world. The view along the central aisle is most impressive. The altar area is lovely. A number of fine sculptures are to be seen.
It was interesting to learn that it has been the model for numerous churches in Europe and beyond.

With two steeples on the sides, Ludwigskircle looks a little different from the other churches I have seen in Munich. It is supposed to be famous for its fresco especially the one behind its altar which is said to be the second largest altar fresco in the world but unfortunately when I visited last September, the painting was blocked by scaffolding probably set up to do maintenance or repair. It serves both as a Catholic Parish and University Church and is very close to the Universitat tub station. Worth visiting when you got spare time in the City and do not forget to take a look at the Siegestor triumphal arch close by.
