We came from the east, through the Italian Renaissance-style gardens of the Hofgarten, and Residenz royal palace and beyond that the English Garden. The Theatinerkirche church and the old Odeon theater. We got to see the Feldherrnhalle monument, the site of Hitler's 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, but did not realise until afterwards.

We came to this plaza from Marienplatz passing the Max-Joseph Platz. There are a few really interesting looking buildings around this square, particularly the Feldherrnhalle and Theatinerkirche. An entrance to the Hofgarten is also at the Plaza. There are quite a few cafes and shops in the area too.
This is a nice place to go if you like historic buildings.

A large square in Altstadt Munich, near Theatine Church and Hofgarten. The battle of the Beer Hall Putsch happened here. Other than the historical significance, I don't think there is anything remarkable here but if you are visiting the Theatine Church and Hofgarten, you can just take a walk.

We passed through here during a larger walking tour of central Munich. While there is a bit of history surrounding this square, the main activity we observed while we were here (December) was a Christmas tree market. There are some other nice buildings in the square, which can make for some good photos.

A place of some historical interest, as it was here that the Beer Hall Putsch ended. There are some beautiful buildings around, like the Theatine church and the Feldherrnhalle. Not a place I'd necessarily have gone out of my way to see, but interesting nevertheless.

Located just north of the old town of Munich is this public square. There's actually much to do and see in the square as quite a lot of shops, cafes and restaurants are close by. The are some nice building around the square such as the Odeon (for which the square was named, the Palais Leuchtenberg, the Bazaar Building, including the Café Tambosi, the Palais Ludwig Ferdinand and the Brienner Straße.

Probably the square is best known for being the location of the gun battle which ended the Nazi takeover attempt of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.

Looked really impressive here, a mighty looking building... That would have looked even more impressive under sunny conditions, I am sure. Still good to see.

The Odeonsplatz is a large square in central Munich, just north of the Old Town, at the northern end of Residenzstrasse and at the southern end of Ludwigstrasse. It used to be the site of the Northern Gate into the city, but in the early 19th century it was developed into a public square, named after the Concert Hall (The Odeon) that once stood nearby. The Bavarian kings were buried in the crypt of the big orange-coloured Theatine Church of Saint Cajetan, on its western side. Nearby, at the southern end of the square, in the mid-1800s, the Bavarian king ordered the erection of a Florentine-style Loggia called Feldherrnhall, which honoured the Bavarian Army and its generals. In 1923. the Feldherrnhalle was the scene of a bloody gun battle between Nazis and police, during Adolf Hitler's first attempt to take over the government. This is known as The Beer Hall Putsch, and it failed when this gun battle killed four police and 16 Nazis. Hitler was arrested and sent to jail. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, they turned the Feldherrnhalle into a Nazi shrine ... even producing a political medal with an image of the Feldherrnhalle on it called "The Blood Order", given to Nazis involved in the failed putsch and to others who fought for the Nazi cause before they took power. The only evidence of this today is a bronze plaque at head-height on the wall of the Residenz near the Feldherrnhalle, which explains the events of that day in November 1923 and names the four Bavarian Policemen who died suppressing the Nazi Putsch. Look for it, as you walk through Odeonsplatz. It's on the Residenz wall just acorss Residenzstrasse from the Feldherrnhalle.

Odeonsplatz is a 19th-century square located just west of Residenz and Hofsgarten which has several interesting attractions to see when spending time in this area of Munich.

Here you will find an equestrian statue of King Ludwig I, Feldenhalle, a Florence style loggia with other monuments and the attractive Theatinerkirche church. There are other attractive buildings around Odeonsplatz as well as access into Residenz and Hofsgardten mentioned above.

During our recent December 2019 visit, there was a small Christmas tree market taking place at Odeonsplatz, a good opportunity for locals to purchase trees to decorate their homes during the holiday season.

Of historical note, Odeonsplatz is the location of Hitler's Putsch, a failed coup attempt by Adolf Hitler in 1923.This is worth reading up on prior to visiting if you want to learn more about historical events that happened here in the past.

On our recent tour in Munich we did the usual hours long and grueling city walking tour through the down town central areas of yet another of Europe's Great and Major Cities. Munich was no different, we visited this Square, took our pics and we were on to the next huge city square, Munich has several. It wasn't till we got home that I realized what an important place this was. In 1923 this place was the site of the brief battle that ended Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch. During the Nazi era it served as a monument commemorating the death of 16 members of the Nazi party. The square in front of the Feldherrnhalle (the Odeonsplatz) was used for SS parades and commemorative rallies, and it was here that Hitler's famed SS Troopers swore their Blood oaths to him during their massive candlelight vigils. Very historic site indeed. Little did I know at the time what a really important this place really was. Do your research B4 you go.
