Beautiful collection of ancient Greco-Roman artefacts including weapons, jewellery, statuettes and what is probably one of the biggest collections of perfectly preserved greek pottery. Unfortunately, the displays only feature descriptions in German which takes away from the experience for tourists. Could also use wifi!

One of the three impressive monumental buildings that we enjoyed viewing at Königsplatz is Staatliche Antikensammlungen (State Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities). These buildings were all designed and built in the 19th-century and represent the Three Orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Staatliche...More

This museum makes an excellent pairing with the Glyptothek across the street. One focuses on ancient Greek and Roman sculpture, and the other on ancient Greek vases. Many masterpieces are on view, and if you ever wondered why people care about these types of objects...More

This museum is housed in a historic building, which is by now a bit run down. But is offers an atmosphere of a classic, 19th century museum. The collection emphasizes quality over quantity, and I must say, the collection is beautiful, especially for the Greek...More

I went on a Sunday, so my 1 Euro entrance fee covered this museum and the Glyptothek across the street. I would have paid more for the Glyptothek and less for the Antikensammlungen. On the plus side, the museum did a great job of providing...More

A visit to the museum was not on my agenda but since it was included in my entry ticket to the Glyptothek, on the opposite side of Konigsplatz, I paid it a visit. This museum houses the state collection of antiquities of the Greeks, Etruscans...More

After visiting the Glyptothek, we walked across the square to this museum, mainly because our ticket included both. This museum was even more interesting and if you're going to see both of them, see this one second. The exhibits are more varied and slightly more...More

Located on the south side of the plaza, the works of art are housed on three floors. The day I visited, however, the second (first in Europe) was closed. Most of the objects are in cases but be forewarned--the labels are in German for the...More

You may be a little surprised that an important but relatively obscure museum was on my bucket list. The reason is simple - 3 of the 16 Greek Vases I have taught as part of the New Zealand Classical Studies curriculum are held in a...More
