- HofingerWels, Austria269 contributionsMust seeHohenschwangau Castle, where Ludwig II of Bavaria spent his childhood. The castle is still privately owned by the Wittelsbach family. A footpath leads from parking lot 4 to the castle, alternatively you can travel by carriage for a fee. Ticket either online or at the ticket center - near parking lot 4 There is no restaurant on site!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 April 2024
- claudie62Boulogne-sur-Mer, France1,493 contributionsSuperb castleOpposite Neuschwanstein, they share the same parking lots and the same accessibility problems. It takes about 25 minutes to walk. The visits are “guided” and start at the appointed time, no tolerance. The castle is more classic than its neighbor, the rooms are smaller with more sober decoration but everything is of certain interest. The visit lasts approximately 40 minutes, photos are prohibited.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024
- Walter TPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania245 contributionsWorth the visitStay over the night before and take the first tour in the AM. Make sure you have your tour tickets well in advance online. Don't bother coming if you cannot walk up three flights of stairs. That said, the tour is around 45 minutes and really interesting with paintings and ivory carvings. The history of the castle dating from the 12th century is pretty amazing.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 June 2024
- melareistBad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany49 contributionsFamily management is worth itFirst things first: It really is madness how many tourists are around the royal castles. So it pays to be early and take an early lead right away. We booked a family tour at the castle in the early afternoon (none was offered earlier) and spent the time before on the Alpsee. While bathing in the warm Alpsee, time flew by. It is recommended The tour weeks or even months in. Book in advance. It's worth it. The tour was child-friendly and also the hour flew by. Our girls (3 & 6 years) were delighted. We went up on foot in the best weather and down by carriage in rain for a total of 9eur. Neuschwanstein Castle is also worth seeing!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 August 2024
- aulisLombardy, Italy1,845 contributionsLudwig's father's castleLess famous than Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau was built by Ludwig's father, and is located at a lower altitude, 20-30 minutes walk from the other castle. The visit lasts just over half an hour. Unfortunately I had to join a visit in German and I could only guess vaguely what the Guide told. Visit no less interesting, although objectively the castle is not as beautiful as the first. The two castles can be visited on the same day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, leaving a couple of hours between the two visits to eat something and move calmly. Recommendation to book tickets online.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 16 August 2024
- STEVE LOberschaeffolsheim, France525 contributionsVery good experience but too fastThe castle is beautiful, the view of the lake or the castle of Neuschwanstein is superb. The small outdoor park of the castle is accessible free of charge, as is the shop. The interior can only be visited in guided tours with audio-guides available in several languages. But be careful, the tour is timed and monitored by a Guide that activates the Audio Guide for each room. As soon as the text is finished the group should proceed to the next room. There is therefore no way to wander as it pleases in the castle which can therefore be visited in 50 minutes top-chrono! In addition, photos are prohibited indoors. We do not have time to observe all the objects and decorations of each room. WARNING, the same day many slots are full, it is better to book on the Internet several days or weeks in advance to have the day and time of your choice! The different car parks in the city are expensive at 12 euros per day!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024
- Angelina_RedWashington DC, District of Columbia29 contributionsHohenschwangau is a Must Visit Castle-Best Tour and Engagement with History-Possibly better than Neuschwanstein 🤗If you are going to Neuschwanstein Castle, you should absolutely visit Hohenschwangau! Of the three castles; Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, and Linderhof, this one has the best tour and feels the most like a castle on the inside. The guide here was the most personable of all the tour guides, and the tour most engaging and interesting. Additionally, because the royal family lived in the castle, there is more to learn and enjoy about the royal family, history of the area, and the things in the castle, which made it feel more real. I definitely recommend you buy your tickets online ahead of time if you aren’t part of an organized bus-type tour. There are also limited guided tours with a guide, and the rest are audio tours, another reason to book ahead. The guided tour is the way to go, if it is available. The walk up the hill takes about 10min. There are a few overlooks you can stop at and see Neuschwanstein or the lake if you want a little break on the way up. You only need to arrive at the top 5-10min before your tour time because everything is automated and you can only get through the turnstile at your designated time. There is a small cafe and W/C in the waiting area of the courtyard, which is well shaded by trees, but seating is limited. The town is little more than gift shops and a few restaurants, so you don’t need a lot of time in the town. It is easy to combine this castle with Neuschwanstein if you book ahead of time and plan to arrive early. We did 9:55am Neuschwanstein and 1:40pm Hohenschwangau with the guided English tours, and the timing was perfect for photos, a little souvenir shopping, and lunch between. There is also a beautiful lake you can walk to for some scenic views and photos. Parking Lot P4 is by the busses to Neuschwanstein and the walk to Hohenschwangau. All parking costs 12€ at the time of this review.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 September 2024

- Talant2007Moscow, Russia26,656 contributionsHohenschwangau CastleA castle on this site existed as early as the 12th century, it was built by the knights of Schwangau. Over time, it collapsed and by the beginning of the 19th it had become a ruin. The Bavarian King Maximillian 2 (1811-1864) built a medieval-style castle in 1832-1837. His son, King Ludwig 2 (1845-1886), grew up here.Visited October 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 October 2024
- ErpelBuseck, Germany330 contributionsShould have seen! The former knight's castle Schwanstein was rebuilt under Maximilian II in the Neo-Gothic style, under the name Hohenschwangau Castle. You can easily reach the castle on foot via the stairs (about 10 min. Footpath) Entrance is only possible with a guided tour, which also makes perfect sense. You will be guided through the premises and learn interesting facts about the castle and its inhabitants. Super interesting guided tour that also leaves room for questions. Because of the Neuschwanstein castle that stands a short distance away, this wonderful mansion renovated in the 1800s takes a back seat.
The nearby Museum of the Kings of Bavaria and the two lakes (Schwansee and Alpensee) are a must-see.
Certainly outwardly it does not have the same charm as the other castle but I must say that inside, also thanks to a visit with audio guide (in our case in Italian) to the royal rooms that make it up all furnished with original furniture.
The paintings and objects displayed in the rooms are of truly remarkable workmanship.
The duration of the visit is about 40 minutes.
The small garden in front of the castle is beautiful from spring to autumn for the beautiful colorful flowers (I was already there at another time).
The walk around the two lakes at sunset (better in summer) is very romantic.

So, we were a little confused as to the set up at the start. Basically there are 4 car parks. Parking is around €8 for the day, at least it was in P1 which we were told was the cheaper car park of them all but can not say for certain that it was. All the car parks are aabout the same short walk to the main ticket office. From here you can buy your ticket to either Hohenschwangau or Neuschwanstein castle, walking in one direction to the one castle, then returning to the same area and walking in another direction to the other castle. Both walks are up a steep tarmac path or you can take the horse and cart. We had visited Neuschwanstein castle over 30 years ago but when we went on line to buy the tickets they were just impossible to get so we resigned ourselves to doing just Hohenschwangau and just walking up to Neuschwanstein, having a look around the outside and walking back. It was a Sunday and we found the weekends at this time of the year (September) to be very manic in the tourist areas. We got to the car park around 10 (we were staying 10 mins up the road in Fussen), and got in easily in the car park. We went to the ticket office to buy a ticket for Hohenschwangau castle and easily got a ticket for Neuschwanstein castle for 2.30. The walk up is not as long as they say but it is uphill to both castles so make sure you have decent shoes on and fit enough to do the walks. Also when doing the castle tours there are a lot of steps particularly in Neuschwanstein castle, at least 100 steps up and another 100 or more down on a spiral staircase which made you feel a little dizzy. You can only go inside the castles with a guided tour, you have an audio guide in your own language which explains everything though you also have an individual guide who accompanies you. We thought the Hohenschwangau guided tour was so much better as the girl added extra commentary which was interesting. You must do both castles whilst you are there, they relate to each other in their history. At the base were the ticket office is there are some small shops selling gifts and restaurants were you can stop for coffee or lunch. At the top of Neuschwanstein you can buy snacks or a drink also a restaurant. At the ticket office area you have to pay for the toilet, if you go to Neuschwanstein when you enter with your ticket into the court yard there are toilets here which are free. You can enter this area 10 mins before your tour but when your tour is called up do not be late or you will not be allowed in, they are quite strict about this and will not let you on the next tour.

A great castle that you should definitely visit.
Today it is privately owned by the Wittelsbach family.
In the castle you will find great paintings, beautiful interior and tastefully designed gardens, impressive views.
The castle is easily reached by a path with many stairs, about 15 minutes from the parking lot to the castle.
We made a reservation of a guided tour on the Internet, otherwise you don't always get tickets.
Unfortunately, there is no discount on the entrance fee with the Bavarian volunteer ticket - I find that a bit of a shame!
We really liked the personal tour with a castle employee!

Disastrous experience thanks to the “kind” and “pretty” lady of the ticket office with long white hair. In 7 friends, some with children, after two and a half hours of travel, we arrived only 11 minutes late due to a deluge that had blocked us for an accident and paralyzed the whole city of Füssen causing unexpected traffic. Before we left we had already purchased tickets online and were also denied a refund. During the trip, knowing of the slight delay we also sent an email and tried to call but we did not receive any Response, the service was disabled. The ticket girl had no mercy or offered us any alternative but not to listen to her frustration at waking up early to work half an hour early to be punctual every morning.
Like us, another family with two small children remained outside.

Uninteresting castle, ugly from the outside, nothing special inside, paintings and objects already forgotten, few rooms to visit and everything protected from a distance by hideous glass, (but who touches anything there?) Anyway, it's not worth the visit, among other things Another hasty visit by the guide who didn't speak Italian and couldn't even photograph anything.
Classic "assembly line" model visit, on to the next one, let's not waste time here..
Another note, in the places near the castle, not even a bar that offered toast, only those indigestible local frankfurters and mash.
Italy can always teach something when it comes to tourist reception.
Hohenschwangau Castle, nein danke!!

The tour of the castle is very impressive but, to me, incomplete. You see the rooms used by the family and they are fascinating and impressive but there is nothing to see relating to the people who worked there. It would have been interesting to see the servants' quarters and to hear something of what life was like in the castle both for the family and the servants. One note of advice - book your tickets online through the official castle website before you go. It's easy to do and, if you book a few weeks in advance, you'll be sure of being able to visit the castle on a day and at a time of your choosing.
Just a note of advice if you want to make Hohenschwangau village a touring base for your holiday. The village is a single street with a few hotels and some shops selling tourist souvenirs. It leads only to Alpsee which has the Museum der bayerischen Konige near the shore. The scenery is lovely but if you want more to see and do, I'd recommend staying in Fussen which is about 15 minutes away by car (there's also a bus route).

Not as picturesque as it's nearby neighbour, however still worth a visit. Book a ticket online in advance as only guided tours get you access to the inside. A pleasant walk from the parking area (car parking is chargeable) with views across the lake & to Schloss Neuschwanstein. The gardens are worth a stroll whilst you wait. The interior tells a story with lots of painted rooms - the guide gives you lots of history - tour is about 35 minutes.

Schloss Hohenschwangau is where Mad King Ludwig spent more of his time. It's overshadowed by his more famous creation, but both castles are accessible from the same town/parking and both are worth seeing. We bought a combo ticket in advance that had timed entry to both of them. The tour of Hohenschwangau lasts about 45 minutes and takes you through multiple interior rooms. It gives a good overview of how he grew up; the highlight was his bedroom, which looks up the hill towards Neuschwanstein. We arrived at the castle about 30 minutes before our tour, and used that time to explore the gardens surrounding the castle, check out the gift shop, and take photos of the surrounding views. We were glad we'd visited both castles and basically made a full day of Schwangau, its lake, and its castles.

I'm a huge fan of King Ludwig and just being here was wonderful. I took the brief tour. Photo taking isn't allowed inside any of the castles as far as I know, so I spent some extra money on the photo books available in each gift shop of the castles I visited. I still look at the books years later. (I visited in March 2015, but there was no option for this date on the drop down menu on Trip Advisor). Hohenschwangau wasn't quite as awe inspiring as her neighbor, Neuschwanstein or as stunning as Linderhof, but still worth a visit. I arrived at opening time and got my tickets before heading into the little store next to the ticket purchasing area (cash only) where I bought a pre-packaged sandwich, some snacks, and a drink before walking up. I believe there were quite a few stairs. I sat outside near the castle beneath the trees and ate my lunch while enjoying the spectacular views. Will never forget it. Hope to move to this area someday. I went 4 times in a week and was rewarded with different weather and different company each time. Don't forget to stop in the gift shop also. I found many beautiful gifts to take home with me. (I bought a suitcase at a Woolworths in the neighboring town of Füssen, where I stayed, and stuffed all of my purchases in it for the trip home. I only paid $25 for it and it was much easier than bringing a suitcase with me originally….Fast forward 7 years and the price of the suitcases at Woolworths were now around 50 to 60 euros) Also, pay attention to your ticket time when purchasing online. I accidentally messed up our timeframe and missed a scheduled tour in the Autumn of 2022! The Königsschlösser combination ticket is available at the desks of Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Herrenchiemsee and there are different options to combine these 3 attractions. There is also the separate Bavarian Castle Pass, otherwise known as The Bavarian Palace Pass or the Bayern Schloss Pass and this gets you admission to over 40 palaces, castles, and other sites within Bavaria/Bayern. If you compare these prices with the cost of each attraction individually (go to the Bavarian Palace Department website map to calculate/research which sites you want to visit) and you may be able to save some money.

We definitively do not agree with the reviews that say that the visit of this castle is not worth ! It is: it takes 45 minutes, and you're shown about 10 rooms on 3 floors. The fact that our guide was very kind and we could interact with her and that she provided for us the audio-guide as we were Italians in a German guided tour (+ another foreign couple) and we could hear both the guide and the audio-guide, has been a plus ! I'm not used to give tips: this time I was pleased to give.

I would like to get access to the part of the castle giving me the view of the “Backdrop” of the Mona Lisa. I was told recently that Leonardo Da Vinci used Schwangau as the backdrop. And that it was from the point of view of this Castle... How do I gain access to the part of the Castle that is off limits to the general public?
Written 24 October 2019
Art reseachers state the background in the Mona Lisa most likely portrays views in the Montefeltro region in Italy. Another researcher says the landscape image resembles a background screen sometimes used by Renaissance painters in Italy. You might be disappointed then when visiting the Schloss Hohenschwangau should you not see what you came to see.
Having said that, there are spectacular views of the mountains and river from Schloss Neuschwanstein, just up the mountainside from the Schloss Hohenschwangau located on the hilly part of town below.

Hi, we're visting on a day trip from Munich, arriving in Fussen at midday and leaving 1800. Will we have enough time to visit both castles? How long in total should we set aside to visit both? We're looking at the 1430 tour. Thanks
Written 28 May 2019
We were in Munich a few weeks ago - early May. We visited both Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein with Grayline Bus on their day tour. The bus leaves on this day tour from the Karstad store across from the the Munich train station. See their website for cost of this day tour. On the bus, we paid an extra 27E for the admission tickets to the 2 castles which the bus company purchased for us so there was no waiting in line or fear of not getting in. There is also a short stop in Oberammergau. The website has very good detailed information about the departure times at each of these places. This tour was an easy way to see the two palaces.
We arrived at Hohenschwangau at 12:30 and left at 4:30. Our timed entry for the castle was at 3 so we had time for a quick lunch OYO and the opportunity to visit another attraction. We chose to go to the Museum of Bavarian Kings which was excellent with its history of the Wittelsbach rulers. Note that the cafe in the museum is closed for reno. We had soup and a sandwich at Hotel Mueller bistro for 13E.
We could have walked up to the family Hohenschwangau castle along a steep winding path from the parking lot across from that Museum- about 15 minutes to the castle. This path is at the back of that parking lot, on the right. The shuttle bus to Neuschwanstein Castle also leaves from the same parking lot. The grounds around the family Hohenschwangau castle are free - no ticket is needed, but if you want to tour the rooms with a guide for 35 minutes, you need to present a ticket. The ticket office for both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau is close to Hotel Mueller.
Going to Neuschwanstein Castle with ticket in hand already - For our 3pm entry to this castle, we took the shuttle bus around 2. It stops at Marien Bridge after about a 10 minute ride. The bridge is just steps away from this bus stop. Taking photos of the castle from the bridge - allow 10 minutes. Walk up a steep hill path to Neuschwanstein castle - allow 15 minutes. We got to the entry point at this castle with time to spare to look around the upper courtyard. The guided tour lasts 35 minutes. Walk downhill another 15 minutes to the bus stop. Wait for the bus in a queue. Another 10 minute ride down to the shuttle bus stop. All together, it took us from 2 to 4pm going up to the castle and being back in town. Hope these times help you out in planning when to get a ticket for the second visit.
Be aware that on the visit to the interiors of Neuschwanstein Castle, there are several steep, narrow staircases to climb - similar to those in church towers. Take along as little as possible in your bag for a light load to carry up those steps.
Note that the shuttle bus does stop service should there be high winds from a storm. We had no trouble getting a ride to the castle in the early afternoon when the sun was shining, but coming back with a windy storm swirling around, the shuttle stopped service. I managed to squeeze into the bus, but hubby didn't get in so he had to walk down. Grayline bus waited until everyone was back due that circumstance. So from this experience with weather changing quickly and lack of shuttle bus service, I would suggest first a visit to the family Hohenschwangau castle.
After seeing both, I preferred the visit to the Linderhof Palace with its very extravagant interiors, nice pool with fountain, but only 10 rooms to visit. So glad I was able to see Ludwig II's 2 extreme castles.
I wrote reviews on TA for the sights mentioned above should you wish to have more information.

I don't want to tour the Hohenschwangau Castle. Where is the best location to take photos of the castle from outside? Also how close can you get to the castle without having to pay?
Written 27 April 2019
You are able to walk around the castles, touch them, and get all the photo's you would like without going on the tour inside.
There are hiking trails around both castles that I recommend, particularly Queen Mary's bridge (Marienbrücke). Great for pictures!

Yes, the visit is indoor. The walk to the castle is easy and short (also alternative by paved road).

Hello,
do you have to buy ticket if you don't want to go inside the castle (just to walk around the castle)? Thank you

Make sure you book tickets online in advance. When we went the line for tickets was loooooooooong ;)

I am keen to visit only the Hohenschwangau castle and am not inclined to book the tickets online as I want to keep my travel plan flexible. Is there a separate ticket counter and hopefully a shorter queue to buy tickets to visit Hohenschwangau castle only? Or do all ticket counters sell tickets for both castles and I have to wait in line together with the other visitors buying tickets to Neuschwanstein castle?
