Situated jut outside Garmisch, it is a must-visit place. Advisable to go early as car parking space is limited and visitors throng the place in the summer. Walk starts from the base where the Olympics 1936 ski slope is still maintained. Going past alpine meadows with beautiful flowers and fields was very enjoyable. The ticket was 6 Euros per person but we got a discount of 1 Euro each due to our GaPa Guest card. The gorge itself was a great experience and very safe despite some tunnels being very dark. It was more than 2000 feet long and very picturesque. There was an exit on the other side too but we tuned back as we did not know where it would lead to. There were no phone signals there hence no access to Google maps for guidance. Bumped my head once against the low mountain rocks on the way back so be careful. Had a lovely lunch on the way back at Klammhouse restaurant with added enjoyment of a live local band playing good music.

The gorge was breathtaking and well worth the 6 euro. When we visited in August, half of the gorge was shut down and there was two-way traffic. This led to a lot of congestion and was very stressful with a toddler. We were not aware of how tight some of the tunnels were, so we brought a child backpack carrier which we did not use because our son would hit his head on the ceiling. We saw several families with small children in the same boat as us. If we could have done the whole trail and not have to double back, we would have enjoyed the experience a lot more. I understand these were unique times, it just wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been. It was still very pretty and I wouldn't mind coming back when our kids are a little older. For those who are new to the area, you can park in the Olympic parking lot for 2.5 Euro and it is a short walk to the trail head from there.

Went to this very narrow mountain gorge after it had been raining for 2 days and the amount of water, not only in the river, but cascading off the top of the mountain was stunning (though quite wet!). Entrance (of 6 EUR) is heavily controlled by electronic gates at both ends but you'll take an hour to slowly walk through it. Once at the other side, continue to walk around as it's lovely mountain scenery. Better still, ride the old cable car to the top, then walk in from the other side.
There's deeper gorges, but this takes you very close and personal to the river.

We had a beautiful walk through partnachklamm gorge on Easter Sunday. Sun was shining and despite many people having the same idea, the gorge was not crowded. We walked through at our own pace stopping briefly to take a photo. The immense power of the water to see and hear was thrilling. Kids found the short dark caves to walk through really fun. The gorge ends out onto a series of different walks. We decided to go up which was fairly steep but maybe for only 20mins but gave the most amazing views and we had lunch at the alpine restaurant at the top. We'll worth it! But it's cash only facility so take euros. The walk in total was a 2hr round trip but add on your lunch break. Perfect family activity. No prams strollers buggies allowed through so if kids too little to walk for 30mins the length of the gorge then consider a baby carrier as you won't be able to put them on your shoulders as its height restricted in parts

We were lucky to visit after a couple of days of rainy weather and the Partnach river running through the narrow gorge was a an absolute torrent. Quite spectacular! This is a very memorable experience, the power of the water is impressive.
To get there take your car or bus to the Olympic stadium and head to the right (past the hotel Partnach Lodge). If you follow the river you are obviously on the right track! The walk to the gorge entrance from the stadium is about 25 minutes, gently uphill. For a fee you can ride up or back in a horse and cart.
Due to rain damage, the walk through the gorge ends at the Partnach waterfall and then you have to double back, so it can be a bit frustrating if there are a lot of people on the narrow path. Be sure to wear a rain jacket even on a dry day, since water drips from above (you are walking along the edge of the gorge/canyon.

From Garmisch Partenkirchen Station, you can walk for about 45 minutes through the cute townscape of Partenkirchen and the idyllic roads where animals are relaxing, and you will reach the entrance to the valley. (It seems that you can get to the parking lot that was the Olympic venue by car, bus, or rental bicycle. From there, you walk, but there was also a horse-drawn carriage running?)
The beautiful and powerful water flow, the powerful rocks, and the sunlight overflowing between the rocks were fantastic and wonderful. The path is narrow and dark in places. Once you leave the valley, you can choose to continue climbing the trekking course or go back the way you came. It's a little steep, but the view at the end of the mountain was also wonderful. There was a restaurant with a beer garden at the top of the mountain, but there was a line, so we gave up and went down the mountain and enjoyed a beer at a shop along the river at the foot of the mountain.
Be careful not to lose the ticket you purchase at the entrance, as you will need it several times. Some people were in a serious trekking style, while others were lightly dressed.

Great experience to see Mother Nature in Action. Stunning !!!
Well organised process for large number of visitors.
Walk up to the Kaiserschmarren Restaurant is a little challenging, whereby the steep road down can be difficult for walking seniors.
BTW, the Kaiserschmarren could be more traditional and original !

In principle, a trip to the Partnach Gorge is worthwhile.
But: Totally overcrowded; in both directions. In some places, it is almost impossible to move forward. The very dark places that you have to walk through should be lit up in my opinion.
The statement from the lady in the tourist office at the Olympic Stadium "from here another 20 minutes to the gorge" is simply a lie! It takes at least!! 45 minutes to get to the ticket booth.
The lady there is unfriendliness personified! And from there it is at least another 15 minutes!! to the actual entrance to the gorge. If you are lucky/or want to be lucky: there is a "carriage service" from outside the stadium to the gorge several times a day for currently EUR 6.00 per trip.
There are enough parking spaces in the immediate vicinity.

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and enjoy a nice walk. From the Olympic stadium to the end of the gorge and directly back was around a 4-5k walk but mostly flat and easily done by little kids and older folks. In the gorge itself there were wet sections where the surface could get slippy so just ensure you have decent grips on your footwear - trainers are fine doesn’t have to be walking boots. Also small sections are dark through short tunnels but our phone torch was sufficient to light the ground to better see. The gorge itself is beautiful and dramatic. We went in summer and I can imagine iced over in winter it is even more beautiful! Plenty of refreshment places along the route and options to extend your walk if you are able.

It was a great experience to hike through the gorge. Impressive forces of nature at work there.
At the end of the (paid) hike through the gorge, it was quite an uphill walk to the alpine pasture - a lovely experience.
Next time, however, we will visit the gorge at a different time of year/day: it was very crowded. We felt a bit rushed by the many people on the narrow walkway.

When visiting the Gorge is turn around now possible? If not how to return back to the entrance and how long does it takes?
Written 25 July 2020
With COVID-19 turning and walking back through the gorge ils not possible. However the Walk back to the entrance is through the forest and it’s lovely. After exiting, the path separates but either way takes you to the entrance.

Sorry for the language if a little misunderstood
I wanted to find out if the place is open between dates
31/05/2020 - L 05/06/2020
And if it costs money to get in? And if so how much?
And is this a walking route that goes back to the same car park (circular / back) ???

Is the gorge frozen currently? I’m planning to visit in 2 days time, on the 5th Feb 2020
Written 3 February 2020
Can not tell, I was there in August. But guessing it is frozen, as it is quite high above sea level, also the place where the mountains begin. Just check the weather, if the temperature is negative - you have an answer.

Hi Harsh,
Good idea, the Klamm is usually open all year, opening 9am-6pm, depends on weather and security!
Other good sights to visit is, the Zugspitze peak when the weather and view is good, and not covered in clouds!
The Eibsee round walk around 1-2 hours nice hike around the lake!
If you like Technologie, the Kochel dam power plant between Kochel and Walchensee!
Have fun, Thorsten

Greetings from Virginia, USA! I will be visiting my sister and brother in law, who live outside Munich, later this month. My family lived in Heidelberg back in the 80's and 90's. I was at a Boy Scout camp in Garmisch a couple summers and my group hiked the Partnachklamm with intent on summiting Zugsptize on a 2 day hike. The weather turned on the second day, and some kids were not fully prepared and we had to hike back down. I have dreamed for 30 years of finishing that hike. Now in my 40's and an avid trail runner, I would love to make a go of it again. I have been trying to read up on distances and duration of hikes that people have made the summit on this route. I see some hikers made it in 8 hours of hiking with some nice breaks along the way. With some trail running and speed hiking, it seems I should be able to make it in 8 hours or less, given no injuries or sickness, no? I appreciate your post and hopefully I can make this long lived dream a reality in a month or so.
Best,
Chris McSwain

Absolutely wonderful to hear of your trek! Thank you for the vote of confidence. I will surely prepare myself physically and with the right lightweight gear, water and snacks. The weather will ultimately be the determining factor. I appreciate your taking the time to write. Here's to many more years of incredible adventures for the both of us!

Hi, how far or how long you guys have to walk from Das Graseck to Partnachklamm? Was there any signs?
Thanks so much.
Written 25 July 2019
Hi Bella,
yes there are many sighs and directions in both ways.
The resort Das Graseck is perfect for the Partnachklamm, as you can enter from both sides lower and upper entrance, and even walk above on the Metal Bridge "Eiserne Brücke" which is not part of the official Klamm. This will give you a wonderful insight from above. When you on your way to the resort you have to pass aside the lower entrance on the Partnachklamm anyway. So very close by easy to walk if your walking condition is normal, as it is hilly and a little bit wet sometimes. also dark in some areas of the Klamm. Definitely worth visiting as it is a natural treasure! Have fun...
