About
A popular day trip from Munich or Salzburg, The Eagle’s Nest atop Mount Kehlstein was formerly used by Hitler for state and government meetings during Second World War. To get there, you’ll have to take a special bus up to Kehlstein, before entering via a tunnel and then elevator. Learn about the history at the sunroom, and check out the famous Italian marble fireplace. Complete your visit with a meal at the restaurant; get a table on the outdoor terrace for views of Burchestgaden and the lake. The Eagle’s Nest is only open from May through October, and may close during inclement weather. – Tripadvisor

- Relax6574792739115 contributionsVery good tour. I would do again.Good tour guide and we'll organized. Weather was cloudy so the view was not good (not tour fault) but the history and experience was worth it. I would do again. Only criticism would be the tour waits to long for late people. I guess feel like they have to do this but holding up everyone in the group for 2 or 3 inconsiderate people seems inconsiderate to the majority that want to stay on schedule.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 October 2023
- JGM418Buffalo, New York107 contributionsA must do - walk up!This is a must do when you are in Bavaria! The views on the way up and at the top are spectacular! Shuttle buses take you to the entrance to the tunnel where an elevator takes you 400 feet up to the top - except the day our tour group was there it was not working so we walked up switch back paved roads because we knew if we didn’t we’d regret it ! It was so worth it -plus beer and pretzels were our reward! Walk all the way up and you will see the alps!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- Lisa WWichita Falls, Texas1,125 contributionsBreathtaking viewsIf you can get past the fact that you are in the same place one of the most evil people who ever lived made his summer home, it is worth it for the absolutely breathtaking views from the mountaintop. If you are able to go walking around the mountain and not stay inside the building, definitely do so. Everything is so beautiful.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- TNHHalesowen, United Kingdom102 contributionsHiked from the centre of BerchtesgadenWe hiked up from the centre of Berchtesgaden. We were the only two to do this on the day we went up. It’s a very challenging hike requiring navigations skills and a high level of fitness. If you don’t have either of these then catch the bus like all the sane people !! Well worth the hike. Wouldn’t have done it any other way. The summit itself is just a restaurant and in many ways a little disappointing. The beer and strudel tasted very good though. One way on the bus cost €24 each. Expensive but we had walked 13 miles alreadyVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 October 2023

More than just a restaurant and terrace, there are many trails that can be explored too so would recommend arriving early to make the most of the time. Make sure you double check the time of the last bus back to Berchtesgaden, we missed it and the walk down was really uncomfortable.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 October 2023

- helenandpaul13Worcester, United Kingdom1,684 contributionsYou can see why this is called the Eagle's Nest. You can see eagles about if you are careful.Took a trip here for the day. You have to drive from the village below on some very tight and bendy roads. Parking is free once you get to the beginning of the tour. Walk to the ticket office by the buses and they will give you a times ticket to get to the eagles nest. You cannot drive up there yourself. They proudly announce that the buses are electric and drivers take you to the car park below the house itself. After departing the bus you walk through the tunnel and take the lift to the top. I think the mirrors in the lift are original and there's used to be velvet seating on the inside of the lift. At the top you can walk round what is left of the house and see the magnificent views of the valley. For the hiking enthusiasts you can walk to the top but it is a steep hike. There is a display about the building and outside you can walk up to a monument which overlooks the house itself. Inside, there is a famous fireplace donated by Mussolini and what is the restaurant used to be the famous conference room. There is a crossed pine ceiling but I don't know if this is original as Hitler used to like his pine. There are not many objects to view and Hitler did not often stay here as he preferred his own house down the road. However, he did visit here and on a clear day the views from the top are magnificent. After looking round you can get the lift back to the car park and drive back to the town. On a clear day, it is a wonderful place to visit although it is not cheap.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 June 2024
- Caroline T11 contributionsSpectacular viewSimply spectacular view! You must go here for the view alone it is really amazing! I also recommend the document center. - Nick SSt. Albans, United Kingdom267 contributionsGreat views. Triggers some interesting reflections. Not cheap, and finding the ticket office from the car park was not easy. It’s quite regimented in the way it works, which quite made me laugh given who built it. The views from the top are well worth it. I found the whole place rather conflicting. To have a beer where such evil deeds were masterminded feels wierd, and it just goes to show what a complicated thing ‘legacies’ really are.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 June 2024
- Luke JanarthanamSingapore, Singapore20 contributionsStunning views!Absolutely recommend visiting, especially if you enjoy signtseeing & hiking. Leave 2-3 hours for this. Tip: Eagle's nest closes quite early each day, by 4pm, we went there right after exploring Lake Konigssee. Bus ride from the tickets centre takes some time, we got discounts from our Berchtesgaden air BNB stay, 10% off. If you're up for it, once you get off the bus, you can hike up to the top of the eagle's nest, or if you're not feeling it, you can take the lift like the majority do. Got some wines & beers at the top restaurant, totally worth the exprience in my opinion.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 June 2024

The bus and elevator ride to the top of the mountain where the Eagle's nest is are quite pricey for what is provided. When you are at the top, there is a restauant and small kiosk, but other than that not much to see and do.
A couple of red and black-grade hiking trails start from the Eagle's nest and we explored down them in the time we had back before out allocated bus and the views were spectacular. Hard to recommend the cost unless you are planning to make full use of the hiking trails at the top.

Drove a rental car from our hotel in Berchtesgaden. If not traveling with a tour group, this was somewhat difficult to find. The locals in Berchtesgaden did not seem to find it a major attraction either (and certainly don't refer to it as "Eagle's Nest"), which was somewhat surprising to us since that is the reason we elected to spend a night in Berchtesgaden. Parking (lots P1 or P2) cost 5 euro. The parking kiosk only took coins and required exact change. From there, you will walk uphill and see signs/blue flags pointing you towards the ticket booth for the bus that takes you to the top of the mountain. This booth is not initially visible from the parking lot as you take a flight of stairs down to the booth (just walk towards the blue flags...). We arrived at 9:30am, purchased the ticket at 10:15am after waiting in a line to pay the parking kiosk, finding the booth, then waiting in line for the bus ticket. Then, we had to wait for an 11am bus. Buses run every 25 minutes but as crowds grow the buses/lines create a bottleneck effect. There were bathrooms, a small souvenir shop, and not much shade. The bus ride was not fun for those of us prone to motion sickness, although it did provide beautiful views. Once at the top, aside from the history behind the building, the building itself is mostly just a restaurant / "tourist trap". There isn't too much to read / look at aside from the impressive mountain views.
Overall, this was our least favorite (by far) part of our week long trip to Germany. It felt "touristy" and crowded with the way the buses cattle-herded visitors. If on a shorter vacation, there are far better places to visit.

We booked tickets in advance via the website made a genuine mistake and only booked a one way ticket. The bus driver told us it was a return ticket he asked in the ticket office and we were told by a surly, rude and aggressive manager that we needed to go to the ticket office. The queue was 45 mins long in the boiling heat, on getting to the ticket office the same rude and aggressive manager was approached by the ticket clerk who then said we had to buy a completely new return ticket. So instead of the cost being 56 euro we had to pay 112 Euro.
Interestingly a German speaking couple at the next ticket office said that they had lost their tickets they were issued with new ones with no issues or rudeness. When we got to the top the ticket office tried to make us pay again as they said that the ticket we had bought on the website was an up ticket not a down ticket, despite what was said at the original ticket office We believe that the website is confusing to ensure that additional revenue is being made !!
We were able to prove that we had paid a second time and they honoured the return trip Trip was OK enjoyed the visit despite the incomparable lack of customer service and clear bias towards Germans !

Due to a problem with a crashed bus close to the summit we were not able to visit the eagle's nest this morning. The company delt with the situation very professionally by offering a complete refund, an exchange for a trip another day or to visit the salt mines instead. We chose the latter and enjoyed it very much. It is in those situations that you can appreciate the values of the people running a business. I highly recommend booking your trip with them, you will be safe knowing this company cares for their customers.

Drove to Berchtesgaden to visit the Eagles Nest last week. I did read the many negative reviews on here and it was a little off putting as I almost changed my mind but I decided to go and see it myself.
I was a little disappointed at the price of the ticket, at 28 Euro it did seem a little expensive, but unfortunately you can’t drive up there because the road is closed to the public and has been since 1952, this is because the road is only 13 feet wide so it’s impossible for two cars to pass each other.
So unfortunately you have no other option but to get the bus, apparently the actual entry to the Eagles Nest is free, however you would have to walk all the way to the top, some say it’s 3 hours, others say it’s closer to 6 hours. When we arrived we were disappointed to find that the Brass Lift wasn’t working so you had to walk the last 900 metres yourself.
They did discount the tickets by half so you paid just over 14 euro for a 10 minute bus ride (return) which in most people’s opinions it’s to much, but it’s a tourist trap so it’s to be expected. You get two hours at the top and the return bus is pre booked on your arrival, if we hadn’t have had to walk up and back down again it would have been a struggle to find enough to fill two hours.
As a WW2 history buff it was one of those go to places to say you had been, there wasn’t a lot of history there, there was some, and there has been a new set of pictures put in the Sun Terrace depicting the building and the downfall of its former occupants, but it’s been downplayed, as you can understand Modern day Germany doesn’t want to be reminded of such times, nor does it want the site to become a shrine for extremism, so in my personal opinion I think they got it just right.
You can still see the marble fireplace and the names of the G.I ‘s etched into it, it was interesting to see, and there was pictures in all the rooms of what it looked like when the War ended.
I didn’t eat in the restaurant, nor get a drink, I came I saw I left, the view of the mountains were fantastic it was a lovely clear sunny day, and the walk up the hill for the last 900 metres wasn’t that bad, but I did see a few of the older generation struggling, and some unfit younger generation too, and there isn’t a lot of seating on the way up which would be an additional benefit in the future.
All in all I enjoyed it, you’re only there once, it was a shame about the lift, but there’s nothing that could be done about that.
That afternoon I went to see the ruins of the Berghoff, it’s difficult to find and it’s all but only one wall away for being totally wiped of the face of the earth, buried in the woods out of site due to an agreement the Americans authorities gave when handing the area back to the German government in 1952.
People have different views of the site both the Eagles Nest, and the Berghoff, but don’t let all the negative comments put you off making your own decision to go.

We were a little disappointed to discover that what is a place of historical interest is now pretty much simply a location for a restaurant. Yes the location is stunning - high up in the mountains, but then there are equally stunning locations all around Austria available by cable car. There was a gallery of photos depicting how the building had looked during the time it was used by Hitler and his friends and other world leaders so one could imagine it as it had been. If I was staying locally I would feel it was still worth visiting but I didn't feel it was necessarily worth the cost or the time spent travelling from any distance away as one then also has to factor in catching an additional coach for the last short part of the journey and then face a long queue in a dark and damp tunnel to gain access to the lift to take you the remainder of the way up to the summit.

Been wanting to visit the Eagles Nest since we were last in the area 10yrs ago, glad I’ve now done it but in my opinion you’re better off reading all the info online about it & saving your money.
The buses running back & fourth offer a terrible service, with loads of waiting around, it’s nothing to wait close to an hour before you can get on each bus, they’d be much better off including the bus travel into the cost of visiting the eagles nest & just run them seamlessly & frequently enough so you can just hop on & off when you like, the cost because you have to do it in two separate bus trips is also extremely expensive. The bus experience could be so much better than it currently is & is my biggest criticism, it’s also very unclear for most non German speaking couples.
At the Eagles Nest we had a slice of Chocolate cake & Apple cake, 1x coffee & 1x Lemonade all very average with not the most friendliest of waitresses, quite abrupt & unatentative taking our food & my coffee to another table on two occasions, they weren’t even busy! All at a cost of around €23 so be warned.
About €120 which I consider an expensive experience. At least I can now cross it off my bucket list.

Why do they sell tickets when they know full well on a foggy day you can see NOTHING? Scamming unsuspecting tourists out of hard earned money. If not a sunny day DO NOT GO. They know full well with employees at the top that you cant see anything yet they keep sending busloads up there jut to be disappointed. PURE GREED. They don't care about tourists. I was disappointed and disgusted. They should give people refunds but they are full of greed. Karma will get them

I want to caveat this review by stating we ended up at Eagle's Nest when it was shrouded in cloud so we did not get the 'awesome views' experience. That said I still feel what should have been a trip to a place of historical significance felt like a bus trip to a mountain cafe. While I fully 'get' why it should not be glorified, there is so little here to justify the expense; very limited photo exhibition and no guide or film about the construction and what happened here. You are a captive audience to the cafe built in confines of the Eagle's Nest which is fine but there is so little to see and do aside from eating and drinking pretty average fare.

I don't recall seeing any dogs during our visit. However, I just googled your question and learned that dogs are allowed at the site, on the bus, and even on the elevator. They really pack the tourists into the brass elevator, so I hope your dog will be okay with that.

The little town of Berchtesgaden has quite a few very nice hotels. It is the closest to the Eagle's Nest. The town is quite small, however, so there are not a lot of them so you need to book in advance. There are some hotels that are closer to the Eagle's Nest, but they are outside of town and tend to be rather expensive. The next nearest town is Salzburg, Austria. I would say the majority of the tourists stay in Salzburg and take day trips to the Eagle's Nest. It's only about a half an hour away. I prefer staying in Berchtesgaden, however.

Hi we are visiting Salburg / Konigssee in a few weeks. We are confused between doing the Eagle's nest Vs Jenner Peak, could someone recommend which is better ( we are not history buffs, so its more to do with the overall experience and views rather than the history associated with Hitler). Thanks in advance.
