Preorder your tickets. The lines get long but it was my kids' favorite thing we did
They give two or three German tours and then do one in English. Which is great but if you're expecting to take the 12:15 tour and want it in English, you probably aren't getting on for another half hour or even 45 minutes. Then the tour takes another hour. So take that into account. We missed a boat ride by 10 minutes because of this (luckily, I hadn't prepaid for that one so we weren't out any money! The tour is fun and informative. I learned a lot about salt mining and we had some fun slides and a boat ride. It was my kids' favorite part of our Germany/Austria vacation!

Fun filled time with family and friends
First time to visit a salt mine . Very cool. Both mentally and physically. Extremely hot there this past September so, a ride deep into the earth's core was the perfect fix . The history of the mine was fascinating. The docent was very articulate and easy to understand. The light show was amazing. Berchtesgaden itself is a town to behold . Highly recommend a visit . Will go back.

    Interesting tour
Please consider that this is a guided tour and there are only some 60 places per time slot. You should definitely buy tickets in advance and come at least 20 mins earlier, as there's a short walk from parking lot to the entrance and you need extra time to pick up and put on the suit. This is a real mine, not some adventure park, so if you are claustrophobic or anxious about going deep into the earth, just skip it! Our kids (and we as well) found the train ride and the slides exciting and the mirror lake just stunning. The tour was very informative and interesting and our guide Steffi very funny! We loved it! The only thing I don't like is that you are not allowed to take photos, but have to buy official photos if you want to have some memories...

    Interesting tour
We visited the salt mines on a recent tour today Germany Austria and Switzerland. You put on a miners suit then ride down into the mine. It was very interesting, especially the slides down and the underground lake ride.

    Fun and informative
This was a fun and informative tour. First you have to put on coveralls and then you enter the mine by train. You have to climb up and straddle the seat of the train so it could cause mobility issues for some people. Inside the mine you go down 2 slides that were a little scary but fun. You can walk down if you want. No pictures are allowed inside. We really enjoyed this experience.

    Well Worth A Visit
Whilst visiting the Berchtesgaden my wife and I booked tickets in advance for the salt mine tour. You can buy tickets on the day of your visit but risk the chance of it being full. Plenty of parking available and you are given an arrival time, if you miss it your tickets are cancelled. After booking in everyone is required to wear a boiler suit and these are given to you by a staff member. Your soon on a mini train where your photo is taken if you want to purchase it after the tour at a reasonable cost. After a short train journey you get to the top of the wooden slide down to the next level, it is quite steep but fun, those who don't want to slide down can use the steps. The tour is in German as you would expect but there are notices around in English so you can easily follow the gist of what is being said. There is a short boat trip across an underground lake which we found interesting. A short ride in a lift and another slide then back out through the gift shop of course. Lots to buy and what we thought were reasonable prices. There is a restaurant on site but I can't comment on that as we didn't use it. I would recommend this tour if your visiting the Berchtesgaden. The cost of two adult tickets was 49 Euros.

Gives you an appreciation for the history of Salzburg (so-named because of the SALT trade)
Fun visit and a trip back in time ... both because of the mining history in the area and because I visited this place when I was 4 years old. You put on "miners' clothes" (jumpsuits) over your regular clothes. They had us put everything into lockers and said they didn't allow photography. Otherwise it would've been neat to take some pics inside. There's a little train that takes you into the salt mine. Then you also get to slide down a wooden slide that the miners used to descend further down into the mine.

We booked the last timeslot of the day (3pm) and the guide, while pleasant-mannered, clearly rushed through the tour and skipped many aspects. Our tour barely lasted 45 minutes when the usual tour should last 1.5-2 hours. When we got back to the ticket office, it was clear why this happened because all the staff were packing up to leave and locking up around us. They were curt and showed their unhappiness when it took some time for us to leave because we needed to use the washroom.

If you don’t intend to keep the place open long enough to do the full tour and allow paying visitors to change out, then just scrap the last timeslot altogether instead of providing such half-hearted service just to earn money. The tour isn’t cheap either. Disappointing experience.

There is a charge for parking, like all parking lots at tourist places in Germany. The visit is interesting. Dressing up in miner's clothing and going down the slide is fun. On the other hand, the audio guide outrageously praises the spectacle on the salt lake in French, even though it is just a very short journey on a barge, with a few small light shows.

On a day of extremely bad weather, we spontaneously had the idea of visiting the salt mine in Berchtesgaden. Tickets could be ordered and paid for online. On the way there, we had clearly underestimated the traffic, so we got to the entrance check at the very last minute. Here it was immediately clear that entry was still possible for an earlier tour, ours, and a later tour, which made us feel a lot more relaxed. First, everyone was given a protective suit that they had to put on over their clothes. Then we found one of the last lockers to lock our valuables in. After only a few minutes' wait, we got on a train with numerous other visitors that took us 600 m deep into the salt mine. Here our tour began with a short introduction and a long slide down a steep slide. Here in the mine we were shown various rooms, systems, and tools, which was really interesting. There was not only a second slide that you could slide down to the lowest level (floor) in the pit, but also a ride on a kind of raft across an underground salt lake. At the end, a train took the whole group back outside. That was really an experience! The whole trip was excellently organized and ran like clockwork.
The group was unfortunately very large, so you always had to stay close to the guide to understand everything properly. Especially since he spoke in the deepest Bavarian dialect. Because there were a number of small children there, there was a lot of shouting, which didn't exactly make it easier to understand the speaker. We would also have liked him to have said a few more sentences to inform us. He always kept his explanations quite brief.
Nevertheless, we would do this trip again, it was really worthwhile, especially in bad weather. A great trip idea!

I joined the visit to the salt mine by a tour from Salzburg - I reviewed the tour separately, this is only related to the salt mine visit.

The mine visit started with a train ride to reach the first slide down - what you see during the train ride is total darkness.
Once arrived at the first slide, you reach the lower level by sliding down - this was actually fun.
Next, you go through mostly empty corridors, with a few movies or slides projected onto the corridor walls. You listen to the the explanations on your audioguide, trying to overhear the guide shouting the same things in German. The air smells badly at times.
Another longer slide down to the lowest point of the mine visit (130 m below ground, ca. 425 ft), where there is a small lake that you cross on a barge, while the cave walls are lighted up with neon geometric lights.
A lift up to where you left the train, another train ride in the dark, and the visit is through.

To summarize the tour from my perspective, I expected to learn something about working in a salt mine, but the short movies and the audioguide didn't help much.

It is also not understandable to me why during the visit it is forbidden to take any photo, supposedly "for security reasons": what security threat is there in taking a photo of a mine corridor or of the subterranean lake? And why everybody is automatically photographed when going down the slide? Is this OK only because they try to sell you your photo at the exit, a mere 7.00 Euro for a picture?

Catastrophe!! Unfriendly staff who react with hostility to non-German speaking visitors and loudly criticize other visitors about their behavior and skin color and lead you through the tunnel without any love. The visitors would disturb others who have paid a fortune for entry. We were there on October 31st and November 2nd and unfortunately had the same experience both times. We also paid the normal group rate for the group. But we were clearly second class visitors 😔

We were a little sceptical at first as there was a mob of people waiting to get in, the doors had not yet opened by nearly 11am and the price was quite high. However once we had done the tour we found it to be really interesting and fun. Two slides, lots of exhibits, two train rides and a boat ride made it fun for any age. Our only slight disappointment is we missed out on a fair amount of info/questions/fun facts by doing the English audio tour instead of being able to understand the German live version.

The tour was overcrowded and things talked about most often could not be seen because there were too many people on the tour. Recorders for English visitors did not work all the time, and not all information given by the tour guide in German was translated; only the recorded information played over a speaker was translated. Tour NOT very informative; tour-guide appeared rushed and not engaged. There was no question session either afterwards either, and all in all, it appeared like a rushed mass-production. In addition, 2 people out of our group of had splinters in their hands from riding on the wooden slides.

We visited from Salzburg for the morning. The tour was quite full, probably 35 or so people. Only 6 or us spoke English so we had an audioguide. The tell you not to push any buttons but sometimes it didn't automatically start when the guide pressed the remote so we figured out that you can make it play manually by pressing the appropriate number. We found the tour interesting.

Is the third time in 10 years I did this tour and every time I was very impressed. The laser show on the water is the cherry on the torte - always gave me goose skin. And the 2 slides were the delight for our 5 years old daughter and a bit of adrenaline for the parents :) Really nice experience!
