The Stadthaus Ulm is exhibition space, event location, modern architectural...

The Stadthaus Ulm is exhibition space, event location, modern architectural sculpture and preserver of historical roots, citizens' forum, coffee-house and restaurant, the first stop for tourists and host to an international festival of contemporary classical music.

In addition to its cultural programme, the Stadthaus serves as a location for external event organizers from a variety of fields, including culture, medical science, sciences, economy, media or politics.

It was in part the desire to enhance the overall appearance of the Minster Square that lead to the the demolition of a former monastery from the 13th century, which was in need of rehabilitation. The cathedral was meant to be the only dominating building on the square. In 1890 the raising of the spire was finally completed, making it the highest church spire of the whole of Christianity.

After a number of failed attempts, Ulm organised yet another architecture competition in 1986. It should be the last one, finally solving the dilemma. On November 15th 1986 the jury selected the design by New York architect Richard Meier. A storm of protest ensued. For years to come the township debated architecture with democratic passion.

Today it is simply impossible to imagine Ulm's city centre without the Stadthaus

I met my family there 10 days ago for breakfast. We were very excited and aware of the prices but still thinking, it should be worth it , since it is on the Münsterplatz. Of... read more

The Stadthaus shows temporary photo exhibitions for free! And they all were worth a visit in Ulm. Not only for photo lovers.

I met my family there 10 days ago for breakfast. We were very excited and aware of the prices but still thinking, it should be worth it , since it is on the Münsterplatz. Of course. The others ordered coffee and eggs, wurst, bread and I ordered a cheesecake instead. We waited 15 minutes for the waiter although it was... More

It has 768 stairs and its really challenging. So better decide before you start climbimg to the top and also its really steep on the top.

This city has a good mix of culture and modern. You have the historic architecture mixed in with the modern shops, so there's something for all.

Stadthaus Ulm by New York architect Richard Meier is located centrally next to the Münster. I like the juxtaposition of medieval and modern architecture. Stadthaus offers (free) exhibitions, often of photographic and outsider art, and events such as classical concerts and modern dance. On the ground floor, there's the tourist information.

The main square in Ulm, obviously dominated by the very impressive minster, is spoilt by this modern lump of architecture, which obliterates the lovely facades of the surrounding old, authentic buildings. It may serve a purpose but don't know what possessed them to put it there.
